Anyone have any tips of getting better at aiming with a controller?
I have toyed with my settings a bunch and my current ones (the ones I posted several posts ago) feel pretty good to me, but I just cannot quickly lock on to a target like I’m seeing in a lot of UN videos, and while I have a few others things to work on as well, that is certainly the most obvious difference between my gameplay and these clips.
I’m honestly having the same problems lol. I think this is just the type of thing you need time to practice with. Like a lot of fucking time.
I love the classic FPS games which never really put a huge emphasis on precise aiming, it’s more about movement, reactions and level knowledge. Eternal still has the emphasis solidly on movement but there’s definitely an element of precision needed this time around which I am personally struggling with at the moment.
This guy:
Has his sensitivity WAY down which was very surprising for me, but maybe that’s what helps him make his shots.
Yeah, I’ve been checking out his UN run you posted and noticed his settings, which are surprising to me too.
He’s incredibly accurate, but one thing I have noticed is that his 180 turns seem a little slow to me, but I also noticed how few of them there were. Which I guess makes sense, in this game, especially on Nightmare, you really need to keep looking forward to see where you’re going and not move backwards, so you’d only really need to 180 if a new demon entered the fight and caught you off guard or something, as well as if the Marauder is dancing around you.
My current settings feel good, but are they? I’m going to play the first level with infinite ammo and Ballista only and save the clip on PS4 and watch it back to see if I’m overshooting a lot or what’s going on. My vertical speed may also be too high. I like them even so diagonals move on the same angle, but I’ll try to pay attention to this when I review it…
Really wish I could play this on my PC. I’ve always been crap on a controller.
Yeah, HMP to UV is like a 20% increase. UV to Nightmare is like 40%. It’s nuts.
Just completed my first 100% nightmare run. I’m very happy to have done this. I could not beat Nightmare on 2016, so I’m happy about that. Not extremely proud of my performance (I died way too many times a few arenas, and likely died 100+ times this run), but happy to have it done.
My next nightmare runs won’t be 100% (skipping Slayer Gates, some Secret Encounters, etc) to hopefully prepare for a UN run if I can eventually do this with only dying a handful of times.
Yeah, it’s probably good to do them (at least outside of my UN run), funny enough, none of them gave me too much trouble. Maybe the one on Super Gore Nest, but I died a lot more on various arenas in the game, which is actually shocking to me.
I think it’s down to the slayer gates being more open than some of the campaign arenas while also having more cover in general, you can quite quickly get out of line of fire in a lot of them while still having multiple avenues for escape in most positions if you get chased.
Campaign arenas tend to be either huge pits where everything piles on you all at once or hallways with 5 mancubus and 12 whiplashes.
A bit of an update regarding my controller settings.
I always need some sort of data, or logical reason behind my choices, otherwise, I’m prone to constantly question my decision.
In my testing with 80 sensitivity (both axis) and 10 look smoothing, I realized my sensitivity was too high. The majority of my twitch aiming was overshooting by quite a bit (it’s a miracle I beat Nighmtare at all ).
I lowered them to 60 and it was still too much, yet my 180s seemed a tad slow. I then realized what I needed to do was factor in look smoothing.
So, I bumped my horizontal sensitivity to the lowest number where my turns felt like a decent enough speed. Setting it to 63 seemed to be where 180’s started feeling good, so I locked it there.
I also realized that any value of about 66 or below for look smoothing keeps the turning speed the same as if it was off, but lowers the sensitivity on the inner movements of the stick (allowing for more precision, and it speeds up as you move toward the edge of the stick), so I set it to 60 and honestly, it feels pretty good. My twitch aiming got a lot more precise yet my turning speed was still good.
I had to do Vertical Sensitivity by feel though, but right now, about 50 feels good.
I will likely play with the vertical sensitivity and look smoothing a bit, but it’s feeling great… Played my first Battlemode and smoked some demons - even had a Pain Elemental rage quit
I had my look smoothing turned down to 0 when I realized it was essentially an added ramp-up time to aim speed, maybe I’ll play around with it off the back of this testimony.
I certainly have heavy thumbs, so that could be part of it.
Also, who knows, I could play today and it’ll feel like shit. I’ll let you guys know.
I also wouldn’t have used it, or used much of it, if I could set the sensitivity low enough to have decent twitch aiming, but still have decent turn speed.
And I know turn speed may not be the biggest deal in this game (single player anyway) but I hate having limitations. I’d rather have decent turn speed and get used to aiming with a higher sensitivity. Look smoothing, at this point, seems to give me both.
Finally, it’s worth noting that i’m coming from much higher settings, so that big of a look smoothing number may be good at helping my aim because of old tendencies. As I get used to this new setting, I may feel that it gets too restricted. I’ll have to keep an eye on it and adjust as necessary.
I turned look smoothing to 20 and it’s helped me land some maker drone headshots with the ballista I felt like I had more difficulty with before, and the hit on my aim speed wasn’t really noticeable so it seems to have helped me.
One thing I noticed with the Precision Bolt on the Heavy Cannon is that I would have more success landing my shots if I didn’t aim while zoomed in. Instead, I’d line up my shot before zooming in and then just tapping L2 and shooting, and more often than not it would be on target. This allowed for more fluid use of the mod in combat. It was especially helpful against the Makyr Drones.
I’m tried that, but I can’t seem to headshot the drones too well even with this. It’s great for weakpoints and enemies from afar, but the drones give me issues… possibly because the fucking ground is always on fire
I have had better luck with Ballista too, but maybe that’ll change now that my settings are re-configured.
Also, I don’t have target snapping enabled, which I think helps put the crosshair on the head when using the scope. I haven’t used it because I hate the idea of not being in control of my aim, but if I’m not aiming while looking down the scope, then I don’t really have much to worry about.
BTW, if you want a good level to use to test/practice your twitch aiming, maybe play with some settings, put on Infinite Ammo and replay Hell on Earth. Immediately swap to Ballista and raw shoot everything.
With the raw Ballista’s hitscan fire, it’s basically the Instagib mod from Unreal tournament. That’s probably why I headshot drones easier with it.
I also realized these setting will take some time to kick in. I had a few instances where my twitch reaction put me right on the target but I was so used to compensating for it after that I would take myself off the target on instinct lol.
My settings are pretty set on horizontal 63, vertical 40, and look smoothing 60. I just ran through Hell on Earth and barely missed a shot. It felt awesome… Onto my second Nightmare run.
