The FPS (DOOM, etc) Thread

Yeah, that’s the one. I haven’t touched the game since I finished it…I’ve been playing Tekken 7, REmake 3 and Path of Exile.

I made it to Urdak on my 100% (so far) Nightmare run.

I doubt I’ll ever beat this game on UN, but i’m definitely trying, and I’m going to get that Phobos skin (beating Extra Life Mode with 10+ lives) on nightmare to prepare, though it can be done on any difficulty.

Honestly, I think the hardest part about a UN run (other than the tough arenas themselves) is picking up the game the next day and keeping up the momentum… I suppose you could play a level before loading your campaign to warm up or something, but I started my run tonight just after the Slayer Gate on Taras Nabad and it wasn’t until the last arena in Nekroval pt 1 before I was playing well.

The part that got me was the fight leading up to the boss fight, the one with a Marauder and then the Archvile right after with no breathing room. I finally did it though!

Yeah the boss fight wasn’t as bad, but I used mainly the chain gun to destroy his armor and body parts. I used the Crucible for the heavies and just kept moving and flame belching as soon as it recharged, lol. The ice grenade was really helpful for add control, but I think next time I’m going to use the rune that recharges equipment faster.

Holy fuck, what a game. I’m going to try Ultra Violence on my next run- I don’t think I’ll ever be able to handle Nightmare!

Can you do the Master levels on various difficulties?

I thought this too after my first HMP run, but you really do get better. As well as you know what to expect from the coming arenas and can prepare (plot out routes, which weapons/grenades to start with, plan out BFG/crucible usage etc).

I did some areas on UV better than I did on a HMP, and even some arenas on Nightmare than UV. However, the difficulty spike to Nightmare is pretty intense (more than the jump from HMP to UV, IMO), and there have been some enemies/arenas that never gave me much of a challenge before that are are kicking my ass. I am certainly better than I was when I started on Nightmare though. I’m sure my next run will be easier.

I touched on this last post, but some enemies on Nightmare have become some huge PITAs that were never before.

The Gargoyle, a simple, 1-pip chainsaw enemy has killed me substantially more times than before. Their aerial spit attacks can pretty much kill you in like 2-3 hits and they’re much quicker with it. They also lunge and swipe at you from seemingly much further away.

I’ve used locked on rockets a lot more this run, which have made various enemies much easier (whiplashes, dread/hell knights, arachnotrons, revenants, and regular mancubi), but made the Carcass so much more of an asshole. His shields seem to be better placed and his ranged and melee attacks are a lot more deadly. He’s actually killed me quite a few times. I used to leave him alone and blow up his shields for traps, but now he’s one of my top priorities.

I’m also just getting better at killing cyber mancubi, Doom hunters, baron of hells, and other big guys.

It’s made this run interesting because there were some arenas I struggled with that i’m clearing easier and some that I never struggled with that I’m dying at multiple times. Of course, there are some that will just always be hard.

For those using PS4 controllers, what are your settings?
Trying to get as much of an edge as I can for nightmare mode!!

  • Horizontal & Vertical Sensitivity: 80
  • Vibration: Off
  • Aim Assist: On (Strength: 1.00)
  • Target Snapping: Off
  • Look Smoothing: 10

Scheme - Custom:

  • Dash from Circle to L3
  • Switch Equipment from D-Pad Left to Circle
  • Jump from X to L1
  • Equipment Launcher from X to R3 (which also puts Melee to X)

Good luck, I just 100%’d Urdak on Nightmare and think i’m going to have a brain aneurysm, lol.

I like that level (architecturally speaking), but man, it’s so hard. Personally, I think it and its boss is harder than the final stage.

All of its arenas are tiny, intricate, and packed with heavy hitters

Note that I’m using a back button attachment for my Dualshock 4 so this might not be the ideal set up for you without the extra triggers.

L2 - Alt fire / Meat hook
L1 - Jump

R2 - Fire weapon
R1 - Launch grenade

L3 - Dash
R3 - Flame belch

Triangle - Crucible
Square - Chainsaw
X - Melee / Interact
Circle - Switch weapon (mapped to right back button)

D-pad right - Switch grenade type (mapped to left back button)
D-pad down - Switch weapon mod (never use this, I know what mods I like)

Just got done doing the same on my fresh nightmare campaign and yeah, it’s so easy to get trapped with heavies bum rushing you.

Honestly, I think I spoke too soon… this first arena in Final Sin is killing me lol, and I rarely struggled on this one. This level is going to be a nightmare.

Thanks guys.
I just finished the Cultist Base on my 1st nightmare playthrough about an hour ago. I was at it for 3 hrs to do so!!!

Y-Yeah I’m not touching Ultra-Nightmare…if its combination of Nightmare and single permadeath.

Nah…I’m good.

You can still get extra lives in UN yeah?

Not that it makes any difference for me, lol. I’m not even touching Nightmare.

I was thinking for my UV run I’m gonna use cheat codes to go back and replay levels and stock up on extra lives before running the last four missions.

Lol, I hear you. There was one arena on Cultist Base (the middle one) where I must have been on it for like 1.5 hours alone.

No you can’t. The 1up items are replaced with a new powerup just for UN that refills Health and Armor completely, but that’s it.

Dang :joy:

That’s the one, and the final one was a bitch.
I have new found hatred for Arachnotrons and Reveants.

…DAMN!!!

Yeah, they’re not fucking around lol.

There is a bit of a way to cheat it…

If you equip the Saving Throw rune, once you use it, force the game closed (end task on pc, close application on PS4, etc, anything but exiting the game in the game), and reload it.

The game still saves checkpoints in case it crashes, so it will load at the checkpoint like normal, and you’ll still have the Rune to use (which you’re really just using to let you know to reload, it’s not to keep you alive).

Doing that’s wack though.

Are you playing on STEAM? I am looking for some good lads to add as boosters if you don’t mind messaging me your details I will send you mine back. I am living that dad life so I can only play a few hours at night here and there.

Sorry, I’m on PS4, but I’m sure there are some Steam players here
