Thanks! This is helpful.
Watching that DraQu run got me changing up my typical gameplan and I was really messing up, so I restarted the Campaign and got the upgrades Iād normally get and now Iām doing better. Already on Cultist Base.
I was struggling with that last arena on Exultia though and I did basically what you said. Initially, I kept trying to do the same strategy but perform it better. Eventually I realized I was staying in the same general area and getting everyone crowding my way. I changed my path to run in a circle but in a way to still focus on the Heavies as they appeared and beat it much easier.
One thing Iām noticing is you really canāt move backwards in battle. This goes for running forward but facing backwards and firing, or even dashing backwards if youāre too close. On Nightmare, I always seem to catch a fatal swipe whenever I do this. I just need to keep looking forward and blasting as I go around in circle in the arenas. Also, keeping the high ground seems to help as well.
Spoilers if you havenāt beat the campaign
I take back everything bad i said about marauders
Turns out all you ever need to do is run and dodge axe throw until green eyes.
The dog only spawns if he blocks shots- either by you or from friendly fire from another demon
Heās really only an asshole when you donāt know what to do.
This is a cool video.
I canāt wait for his Meathook tech video tomorrow. I definitely donāt utilize it the way Iāve seen him and UN runners use it.
Yeah, I actually really like the platforming in Eternal. Its fucking fun, zipping around arenas during battles and exploring far-to-reach secrets. I love the trend of more platforming in FPS games. Destiny does it extremely well, Titanfall 2 did, too. Even Apex Predators has a lot of parkour elements that add so much depth to how you interact with the environment, making it the only BR game Iāve enjoyed. Itās a very welcome addition to DOOM in my opinion.
THANK you.
I can understand why there was so much platforming in Eternal. They made the Doom slayer as an extremely mobile character and I believe the platforming was meant to teach the player how to maximize his mobility. After playing through the game it makes me want to Spiderman through it again just to see what is possible.
At first I HATED the platforming in Eternal but after a while of grinding it out I began to appreciate it more and not find it so annoying. The green light floating sarcophagus can fuck right off though.
Master levels is crazy as shit.
Look at this fucking GIGA-CHAD playing UN on pad.
Got my ānormalā difficulty game save to 100%. Any tips for getting better at higher difficulty levels? Never really played a ton of FPS games outside of the casual playthrough of previous Doom, Duke Nukem, Wolfenstein, etc games
Eternal seems to really nail in the point that you need to be using all your tools and that movement needs to be considered heavily. I would honestly like to play this game through again on at least Ultra-Violence but not sure what the difference really is. More enemies? More damage taken?
The enemies are more aggressive and will hit you with more devastating attacks, and all attacks do more damage.
The only way youāre gonna improve at higher difficulties is by just playing them. Youāre gonna die a lot but adjust a little bit each time and youāll get the hang of it over time. Itās so fast paced that you really do just need to get the muscle memory down.
And thereās few games that have given me the level of satisfaction Iāve got from beating Slayer Gates on nightmareā¦ fucking hell. Itās worth trying to get there.
Oh, and I guess I played a lot of Counter-Strike years ago but not sure how comparable that is to these kind of single player games. But I do remember getting frustrated and dying a lot trying to learn.
Gonna start an ultra-violence run when I get home from work tonight. Wish me luck!
Good luck and have fun! Youāll get the hang of it. I died a bunch on UV but in some areas, things really clicked and I did better on them than I did on HMP.
As you said, just keeping moving (use monkeybars, jump pads, and teleports often; try to keep the higher ground; and running in circles around the perimeter of the arena is preferred), and donāt be afraid to swap weapons as needed - you really need the right tool for the job.
Also:
- take out weakpoints as soon as you safely can
- donāt forget your flame belch, Ice Bombs, and Frag Grenades
- use Blood Punch if things get crowded, or against Pinkies, Doom Hunterās sled, or cyber mancubi (but ice Bomb the last two first - note you canāt Ice bomb doom Hunter in his base but you can on subsequent levels)
Finally, donāt be afraid to take things slow. If it takes 10 minutes to beat an arena because you fire one set of locked on rockets at a Tyrant every lap around the arena, do it, spend the rest of the time rebuilding your health/Armor/ammo/Blood Punch off fodder.
Fodder, especially after Exultia, respawn infinitely until you take out the Heavies. Donāt get too focused on killing them, just use them for resources.
I really underestimated blood fueled. That shit makes tight encounters so much more manageable. Being able to fly off and out of sticky situations so frequently is just game changing.
My runes are:
- Blood fueled.
- Equipment fiend.
- Dazed & confused.
Iām currently running air control, chrono strike, and equipment fiend.
The chrono strike is only being used to help me with my terrible aimā¦ Iām hoping I can swap that out soon. I think Blood Fueled will be my pick if I can. That speed boost is wicked.
Also, I got a bad thumb infection and probably canāt play for several days. Shit sucks. Iāve had this since last Monday but wasnāt bandaging it up properly and it got a little worse instead of better. Itās fine, but the proper bandaging makes playing this game on pad near impossible
Oh well, itās actually lead me to think about the game more, and oddly enough, I feel that I have better strategies now then I did when I was just running around blasting things as I went.
