The FPS (DOOM, etc) Thread

I have seen a small surge of players getting into Quake Champions as well. It might be worth giving that a shot again.

Lol, that’s going to take some time

I know it’s not going to happen, but I really wish they’d release this on PS4. I was sad when I typed ā€œQuakeā€ into the PS Store and it came back with no results.

Maybe it’ll come to PS5. I’d like to play it, too, but keyboard and mouse players will have an advantage.

Do you have any tips for hitting that many buttons? I’m just having a little trouble gelling with the wasd + quick switching + frags + flame thrower + chainsaw. I was thinking of mapping chainsaw and punch to my alternate mouse buttons that I almost never use.

I use mouse scroll for quick switching because SSG and the Ballista are up and down from each other, grenades on middle click, chainsaw/flame belch on my mouse 4/5.

I don’t mind if it doesn’t have crossplay, in fact, it’s probably for the better. I just want a good, old school style arena deathmatch. I’d prefer Eternal to have one, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

I also wouldn’t mind playing any sort of a Quake game, even just a port of Quake 1.

I know I can get all of this stuff on PC, but my PC is a small, 8-9 year old notebook style laptop, and I absolutely detest playing games on it (even the ones it can run).

Oh well, I’m still having a lot of fun with Eternal, and want to try its Battle Mode out eventually.

I’m playing on controller so I don’t think I can help you beyond saying it just takes time and practice.

Yes it is sad how they handled Quake Champions. It would have a respectable following if it went to consoles, similar to how fortnite and rocket league is everywhere though it wouldn’t be as popular.

Speaking of Quake, some of my buddies are thinking about starting a Quake 3 server cause of how bored they are during this pandemic LOL

don’t care if this was posted in the VG general thread it’s more relevant here:

This dude is playing with the Dualshock 4 back button attachment… makes me hope next gen controllers have these baked in.

I was debating getting that but got a pretty comfortable button layout now and don’t think it’s needed, for Eternal anyway.

Got Jump on L1 and Dash on L3 (which takes some time getting used to), the the rest of the L’s and R’s are dedicated to primary/secondary fire, changing weapons, and tossing FB grenades.

Until I put Dash on L3 though, I was really considering it.

Dash on L3… huh… might have to try that. Sounds awkward as fuck though.

Yeah… Honestly, it took like half a campaign to get used to it, lol.

I kept pressing it unintentionally during hectic arenas. Also, it was/is pretty easy to press it down just long enough to get a double-dash by mistake, which caused me to dash over and past a platform a few times, haha.

But now I have much better control over it and I rarely mess up (still in the latter half of said campaign). I’m dashing a lot more in combat (and just running down corridors), and it’s real nice to dash while maintaining your target the whole time.

That back accessory is only like $30 or so though. I was definitely going to get it if L3 dash didn’t take, but it feels fine now… Just don’t go thinking I’m playing as cleanly as that video you posted though, haha.

Edit: how the hell is that guy changing weapons via the weapon wheel so quick. This guy is really good.

I need to study this shit. The Gladiator always takes a few of my lives, mostly in his second stage. This guy works him.

I also really like his meathook xx jump technique. I didn’t realize you could get so much air that way.

Lmao

I’ve read some speculation that some of the DLC will be a prequel of sorts, explaining what happens between 2016 and Eternal and the boss will be his guardian. It sounds dope to be honest. I hope it’s true.

Anyone found the optimal way to kill Marauders? The video @mowr posted it seems like Super shotgun, ballista, grenade repeat.

Also, are freezing grenades for mitigating damage from demons or can you actually kill using them?

Yeah, the SSG/Ballista quick-swap seems to be the trick. You can get three shots in this way. The Ballista does more DPS so it’s better to start with that, but I find it’s harder to stagger him because you have to be more accurate.

Also, I think, if you throw a Frag Grenade as you fire the first shot, it may stun him again by the end of the third, allowing you to continue the combo, but I haven’t tried it myself.

Regarding Ice Bombs, i don’t think they do damage themselves, but I think if you get the extra damage Suit upgrade, shots to frozen enemies do more damage than normally. Again, I need to test it though.

I’ve found hitting him with the ballista on counter then quick switch ssg> qs ballista seems better for me. Frags and flame belch on cooldown.

SSG seems to whiff sometimes, I guess due to spacing, so I use the ballista > SSG > ballista route.

I’ve noticed the SSG whiffing too, particularly when he’s really close.

I guess you haven’t noticed it the Ballista though?
