Free look in DOOM (The old ones) is pointless. I’ve never found a reason to use it.
I tried freelook in Doom 2… Against the Icon of Sin, you could stand on the large platform at the back (where the switch is to activate the normal shooting platform), and shoot rockets into his brain from there, and only enemies on that level were a threat lol.
I’m a big believer that If the game isn’t made with a feature, don’t add it in later as it messes with the designer’s intentions (*).
… It’s the same with jumping in Doom games, actually. You can bypass some things with the mods that let you jump.
(*) Edit after the fact: didn’t mean to sound like I’m against modding games, or that it’s wrong to like them. It was about mentioning this as part of an official release, though I wasn’t clear at all.
I like it. I think it makes the older games feel better to play.
It’s especially satisfying lining up shotgun/super shotgun blasts exactly where you want, to where you’re clapping multiple enemies at once, even with the regular shotgun.
Oh I had a blast playing the old games with freelook for sure, and I do prefer freelook (that’s actually the reason I didn’t play Doom 64 in the day because other games had freelook by then).
But it does allow you to do things that weren’t intended, so I see why Id wouldn’t allow that feature in an official port.
Edit: sorry, I really didn’t make that clear in my previous post. In fact, I basically said the opposite
I posted this in the VGG thread a while back. It looks cool, and if you buy it now you get the full game for free whenever it releases:
ONE guy made this game and it looks better visually than most AAA titles, and the gameplay looks better than a lot of AAA games too.
Interesting, though with my backlog of already established games.
Can I run it though?
and does it have controller support?
The recommended specs are lower than DOOM Eternal so you should be golden.
Not sure, it’d probably say so on the product page. I’m cha-riggered that you’re playing FPS games on PC with a pad though.
Oh u also watching Gmanlives ?
Great reviewer imo.
Need to give that game a shot as well, seems very impressive for an early access title that only one dude worked on.
Yeah, it’s fun watching videos on his channel because I’ve played like 90-95% of the same games he has. People were triggered by his initial Soldier of Fortune II review(he kind of shit on it when it was an amazing game for the time and still is) so he played it again and changed his review.
Civvie is great too, he goes deeper into his reviews and I find him funnier overall: Civvie 11 - YouTube
It does look cool but it also looks like it would 10x better of it wasn’t an fps.
Gmans reviews are great even if I don’t always agree, and Civie is just fucking hilarious. His Pro series, especially the Pro DOOM line is fantastic and really nails the highs and lows of DOOM.
I did back in the day, for a few games but I have playing on controller for eons. Plus I don’t want to tear up my keyboard.
Anyways, Bright Memory does have partial controller so that’s cool.

Beat Eternal tonight. What a great game. 2016 was my favourite FPS in a long time, but I think Eternal edges it out. In my opinion, everything was just bigger and better, and I prefer how the gunplay has been tweaked.
I honestly didn’t mind the platforming bits and in most cases, I had a lot of fun with them… Except the swimming in Taras Nabad, and the jumping boost-shit in Urdak. Also, some of the jumping in Doom Hunter Base was a bit much.
I thought the last level (and boss) was awesome. One of my favourite moments of the game.
I also ended up loving fighting all of the enemies, even the Marauder. My only complaint about the Marauder is I felt he was over-used.
Either way, I can’t wait to run through it again.
Same, to me that level was the best in the game. I wish more of the game was absolute chaos like in that level, it was fucking batshit.
I recommend everyone to try out DUSK if you haven’t yet. It’s one of the best FPS games I’ve ever played, and the level design is some of the best I’ve seen in any game across all genres. I can’t praise it enough, it was GOTY for me the year it released and it’s a fucking > 20 dollar indie game.

Would it be wrong of me to ask if this could become more of a 90’s/Neo Retro FPS thread rather than just specifically Doom?
That’s no problem. It looks like I can still change the thread title.
Anyone have any issues with it?
Also, if we do change it, should be keep it to classic/neo-retro FPS’s only, or make it a general thread for all FPS’s (Apex Legends, etc)?
Personally I’d like to keep it to classics/old school/neo-retro although talk of more modern shooters wouldn’t bother me none, though I do feel like there may be a FPS general somewhere? Could be dead though.
K, I’ll look around for a general FPS thread and make a call. I wouldn’t mind keeping it to retro ones (or styles) either though, but the line would likely getting crossed into other FPS’s too.
Speaking of retro, I never knew Duke Nukem 3D got remade on the PS4. I’m definitely going to pick this up.
I loved this game when I was a kid, and made levels/mods for it for at least 3 years. It’d definitely be better to get it for PC but I don’t have time for BUILD.EXE anymore, and this has a new official episode.
Y’all see the book on the shelf in the Fortress of Doom by Dork Norkem?
Some of those book title are fucking hilarious.
