The First Lady of Fighting - General Chun-li Discussion

Continuing what I was saying earlier, after talking to Demon Hyo, we were trying to find a middle ground on what’s practical and what’s not in tournament play for Chun.

I can do those fancy SBK loops but is it practical when you’re in a Top 8 match, with the pressure on, in front of 3000+ people? Probably not. You want to take what you can get … something you won’t drop. And I think that’s why Chun suffers and why no one picks her.

My Chun team, Chun/Frank/Wesker, isn’t anything different than Noel Brown’s team. In fact, one could say Wolverine is way more efficient than Chun. He has easy, high damage combos. His OTG into X-Factor/Happy Birthday shenanigans are way easier to win with. Chun needs to do a lot more work for the same result. That isn’t to say Chun is bad… or that Chun doesn’t have more potential than Wolverine (I strongly feel she does have more potential than him). It’s just that the “randomness” of the game sometimes is not forgiving so you try to control as many random factors as possibly by dumbing down the game.

If you pick an easy, low execution character, you minimize the randomness of the game. You know that when you land a hit, you’re not going to drop that combo. It’s one less thing to worry about. That’s why you see so many Weker’s topping events. He has incredibly effective tools that require no work. Alukard got 3rd @ Apex though with Jill, Iron Man & Skrull (on my XBox no less for those of you who watched :P), characters that take far more effort to get working.

So going back to your comment, the reason why you see Legs spamming Chuns top and not the ones who know all the ridiculous combos is because landing those 2~8 frame window combos is far harder to do on stage then not. Hyo was doing stuff like cr.:h: j.:d:+:m:, Air Dash, j.:h:, st.:m: st:h:, cr.:h:, j.:d:+:m: Air Dash, j.:h:, etc. stuff in casuals in our room but in tournament? Nope. There’s a chance he could drop it where as spamming legs and Buktooth loops work. The logic is that you have a basic combo that does like 600~650k. That means you have to hit the opponent twice to kill them without X-Factor. Or you could learn the super tight SBK loop in the OP which does 750k~ which means you have to still hit the opponent twice.

I’m not saying I entirely agree with it but I see where it’s coming from. I personally feel that it’s best to know at least one advanced combo with Chun for a few reasons:

  1. The damage (if you need it… Chip adds up and if they’re already at 75% from a few stray hits from an assist, you need to kill them).
  2. Meter building. More hits, more meter. This isn’t Vanilla where Meter is handed out like candy… management maters. A lot.
  3. Corner carry. Chun is scary as hell in the corner. The SBK combos will always put your opponent in the corner.

Anyone have any good tips for dealing with on point Cap? Getting in is seriously annoying. I’m getting quite fed up with this game cuz I’m always dropping combos because of lag but Caps, Wolvs, and Weskers are able to do 100% combos in lag no problem.

I would strongly recommend picking a different character for online (or not playing online at all). Chun’s combos involve too many juggles and links. Notice that Wolverine’s standard BnB uses 0-1 juggles and 0 links. Save yourself the headache, my friend.

Sadly online is the only option for competitive play for me. I have no local scene :frowning: Usually it’s manageable with a full bar connection but sometimes it still spikes and is annoying. I do get lots of nice messages though because of my Chun! It’s easy to impress people with her it seems.

Hrmm well you’ve gotta make online combos then. And you’ll need an OTG assist or a partner in the 2nd slot like Storm whose THC can OTG for you. Chun’s stomp OTG requires too much precision to be reliable online. Just be prepared for working uphill and the inevitable frustration.

The big problem (the one I ran into at least) was that playing online allowed me to chalk my losses up to online BS. And to some extent, it had some truth to it. But it wasn’t until I found a local scene that I could truly play “competitively.” Having the excuse of playing online hinders one’s competitive drive and spirit. Or it did in my case at least. Best of luck to you though.

I’m usually pretty okay with dealing with lag. I understand that it happens to the other player too. I only rage when it’s painfully obvious that it is lag that is the problem. Like if the screen freezes for a split second while I’m mid combo. I will admit the one thing that makes me rage so hard is when someone plays with an obviously crappy connection and uses Hulk and Sentinel as a crutch for their crappy internet. It’s seriously the internet scrub duo. I don’t mind people playing that pair if they are good but that team profits so much from lag.

Anyways, my team is Chun/Storm/Trish so I have the OTG thing taken care of. The only major problem I have is dealing with keepaway. Characters like Doom, Hawkeye + Doom (missiles), Cap chucking his shield all day, and then the stupidness that is x-factor Firebrand level 3. Oh and Frank West constantly having priority over Chun’s moves.

Yea Chun needs her own assists to back up her approach. Assuming you’re fighting Hawkeye + Doom missiles assist, you could always aim to kill the assist by DHCing into Hailstorm on reaction or using Kikosho to inflict damage while nullifying the missiles.

It would seem that light and medium upkicks cleanly and reliably link into air lightning legs. I would think we could get some nice punish combos off this. Thoughts?

Check the combo thread. Light Upkicks combos into pretty much everything. Legs isn’t too bad but why scale your combo when you can just do a full BnB?

Seriously though, like no Chun’s are using this technology, which is insane considering how good it is.

Aha, I skimmed the combo thread but saw nothing. I, too, was wondering why I never saw anything out of it. I’ll look again.

Light Tenshoukyaku is godlike for punishing, specially if the opponent is grounded. You can combo after that

So my vanilla team of Chun/Ironman/Wesker was heavily buffed for me here. However I am wanting to create a “practice” team so that I don’t become so reliant on weskers OTG. A lot of recent play has people snapping in wesker so they don’t have to deal with “Dark wesker”. Well that also kills my chun li combo potential as well.

Well now Chun can OTG without the use of an assist. Something I need serious practice on. So I am going to make a new team and play with it for a couple weeks to work on my airdash head stomp OTG combos. Whenever I end my Chun combos my brain is telling me “press assist”. I want to break that habit and unfortunately breaking them is a lot harder than building them.

So for right now I was thinking Chun/Ironman/???. I see a lot of people mentioning storm. But they have her in their number 2 spot. If I was to do that I would have to drop ironman from the team. As there is no way Ironman is getting put in that anchor position. I could try the “Chun/storm/doom”. I was also thinking of Chun/Frank/Morrigan. But I am not sure I want to remove ironman from my training team since this won’t be permanent.

Oh and I am loving Chun xf3 in ultimate. She already had the speed and damage to be a pain, now with the ability to combo off her throws and OTG she has become a serious threat. And in that anchor position it is so easy to avoid enemy xf3 with her.

Strider, Doom, Sentinel, Taskmaster, and Dormammu come to mind.

Actually after playing around with Chun/ironman/Morrigan I have decided ironman just doesn’t work with chuns otg. His unibeam which I thought would be a great tool to hold them in place after the OTG causes too much hitstun deterioration. When you add that on top of chun’s already heavily deteriorated combos my most of the cast is popping out during ironmans beam. I like that beam assist for getting in, so I was hoping it would also work for my corner combo. Sentinel might be the better fit. Dooms beam seems to have the same problem. But maybe I am just trying for too long of combos.

Well, Chun certainly likes Sentinel Drones and they DHC nicely together. You’d just need an anchor. Doom or Strider would probably be your best bet.

Actually Chun/Sentinel/Strider sounds pretty strong…might have to test that out one day.

some high damaging combos with chun

Clockchun? Or even… Chun-der? I like it. I might give it a try once I’m not playing SF4.

Renamed the thread because “UMvC3 Chun” was boring. Open to suggestions if people don’t like the new one.

This board could certainly use more love, I hope Brian’s front page feature will help. :shake:

On an unrelated note, Shadow Lady/Storm/Gloria = [S]negress[/S] sistahs team.

I assume Gloria is Trish? lol

It’s actually a decent team probably. Which Trish assist though?
