Hope would be a lot more tolerable if like the entire first half of the game wasn’t him dealing with his angst. As a small subplot, sure. But it was like what the majority of the second disc was about.

I never did get the “XII plays itself” complaints, that shit really only happeend if you felt like setting up the gambits for it. Man I miss that combat system.

And I didn’t care for XII but Balthier was dat dude.

The weird thing with FF12 was that you have gambits that were fleshed out so you can have it do everything for you, but when I tried playing without it, I noticed how freaking tedious it was to enter all the commands. Now you might be wondering, “pfff, this guy probably didn’t play any old school rpgs blah blah blah”. It’s not that but because of the nature of how the battle flows, it took much longer to keep attacking and rebuffing during the longer battles like the later marks, which even before Yiazmat take a while to kill. Without gambits, it reminded me of KOTOR (you select an action and let it play itself out) but without queuing up commands , making it feel like a real hassle (and overall I have to say KOTO you get so broke you really didn’t need much strategy). Of course that is without ignoring that KOTOR was actually using a system based on rounds, while FF12 is real time, which of course makes quite a bit of difference.

edit: This also leads me to another problem I had with FF12. In a battle, the game actually queues up commands for higher level spells between everyone. So in a battle against say Ultima, if you had curaga coming and she was about to unleash an attack, your curaga would be full and blinking without being casted until after she had done her move. But to get around this you can use cura (I believe it was cura that works, I haven’t played in a while) and it would just cast without being queued up to other higher level attacks.

Yeah their were some hitches with the system but with some slight tweaking it would have been far and away the best sytsem IMO. Do wish the gambit board was better thoughand archetypes were easier to make and more effective.

Wish there was an MP3 of Noel and Serah’s battle theme, that one sounded very cool.

Snow was so obnoxious in FF13. I was happy when he got smacked around by Lightning.

I wish I could smack the entire FF13 cast around except Sazh.

My first viewing of the the gameplay, really didnt know if it was the same battle system.
Wasnt a really big fan of the battle system for 13, if u liked it good for you. In terms of reusing it for 13-2 that just lazy on SE part if you ask me. Even X-2 had a different system. Why give SE your money if ur going to experience a similar game mechanics but just with an extended story line.

Most sequels play extremely close to the game that came before it. Do you take this stance with all sequels? If they don’t revamp the entire battle system for UC3 instead of adding onto it is that them being lazy?
