The End of a "Empire"?

There has been a lot of KOC talk on this thread which is the reason for my post. I just wanted to say thank you for talking/thinking about our first film. It was such an honor to have an audience with this much thought provoking text.

We have released King of Chinatown on iTunes this week and the mass public that knows little about the community really enjoys the movie. I’m sorry that we could not tell every aspect of this great community’s story, and that we centered on one small topic. I think that between I got next, Focus, and our film, we all covered alot. I know that I got next is on hulu, Focus is on G4, and now we are on PSN and iTunes. I urge you to watch all of these films, comment and rate them. Doing so will promote further growth in this community, the careers of players trying to make this their full time job, and a larger casual audience. We have each been highly successful so far for films with such micro budgets. This is truly a film making success story.

Thanks again,

Calvin Theobald
Producer / Director

He just posted a new vid about the return of fg division.i want to see if he can follow through with many of his plans. I would like to see an interview done about the business side of running a team like that.Stuff like that is extremely informative.

9 to 5 are for suckkaz!

Triforce, like everyone mentioned has no business acumen. While I will admit this guy is a charismatic and a S-class cheerleader/motivator he just falls short on how to make money properly. Instead of taxing EMP member after the thing grew in numbers he spent his own money so others can travel to tournaments and promote the clan. The problem was that his entire stint didn’t generate any money for over a decade and when some paper started to trickle in all the players left because they were offered better deals. That’s nothing to do betrayal, it’s just how capitalism works - people go where the better deals are at. None of this should of surprised him, he was warned by his dad and his friends that this could happen.

Triforce is heavily deluded but it’s the same delusions that one could make money from playing video games that attracted so many of the respected top players we know today like Jwong, Ricky O, sanford Kelly, Marn, Yipes and so forth. There’s no telling if many of these players would of gotten their sponsorships if they were isolated by themselves and/or unable to travel to the many tournament destinations they wanted to go to without the group. On this forum it’s probably the cool thing to shit all over Triforce for the obvious reasons but even as a business failure this guy arguably pushed the FG culture forward and even if he didn’t do that you’d have to admit that he pushed the gaming careers of many players to the point where they are getting paid to play games.

What I still don’t understand is how Triforce doesn’t learn from his mistakes. His top players left him and instead of just doing the adult thing and moving on the guy insists on sticking it out with his group that has no where to go. He hasn’t changed the way he does things so you can expect more of the same, his top players (and sponsors) will inevitably leave him for better deals. He’s doing the same shit expecting different results, that’s what Einstein called the very definition of insanity. This guy should of just folded when his players deserted him, not go all-in with the rest of his chips. He should of become a community manager with Nintendo when he was offered it, that was the best possible thing that could of happened to this guy. Triforce, if you are reading this now go crawl back to Nintendo and start begging because that’s a serious career you were offered. Even if it was only 50k, you should take it and have someone else like your wife manage empire as a side project. I know you want to own your own but taking short cuts to success won’t pan out. Learn from your mistakes and move on.

Yeah, I met Triforce at EVO 2006 during the Third Strike top 16. I didn’t know who he was at first (he did have the powerglove). I believe that Triforce is the Eric Bischoff of the Fighting Game world. Remember how Eric Bischoff put mainstream pro wrestling on the map? Anyway, take care all. I’d be willing to join Empire for Super Turbo. Only things, someone would have to compensate some and/or all of travel/lodging and a cut of the prize money should I win…

I hate all this shit. It’s so blown up and of proportion. E-sports, really? It’s not a fucking sport, it’s a videogame. It’s straightforward hand eye coordination. e-sports my ass.

As for that guy: fuck him too, if he made money good for him if he’s dead broke then good for him too. Either way let him die.

Yes ids I’d rather be free to hate than bound by the shackles of love

man his boss is kind of a douche…

Id hate to work for that guy. started yelling “FIEE MEENEETS OKK”

ya man theres things in life everyone has to learn. For one you might love doing something, but if your not making any money off it, you have to have some other resources to support what you do. Cant do anything with out money in this day and age

stfu chess was just a game, poker was just a game, and ufc was just human cockfighting. fuck even magic the gathering was a children’s card game.

all have gone mainstream to the point that people can make a living off of doing what they love. and there’s nothing wrong with that.

haters like you can’t stop esports. die in a fire pls.

The only thing Triforce and Bischoff have in common is both of their organizations folded.

FG’s dont have the same appeal as chess poker and everything else, its not a fucking sport. Its a niche even in paid gaming, which is a niche itself.

UFC got mass appeal. How many mainstream people gona watch 2 geeks battle it out on joysticks. lol.

Stick to posting about streetwalkers, hoes and how bitter you are with females

This thread is awesome.

lots of people want to watch it. this generation grew up on video games, and they want to see the best players compete head to head. just look at how much srk has blown up over the past few years, or how popular starcraft 2 has become. ufc didnt always have mass appeal. it started off as an infomercial for the gracies and it was for a niche crowd of hardcore fans. it wasn’t until TUF season 1 that it got really popular in USA and now every frat boy wears an affliction or tapout tshirt. that shit didn’t happen overnight.

stick to hating alone in the dark as esports becomes more popular and geeks can get paid doing what they love. its going to be awesome. STFU KTHX DIE IN A FIRE PLS

Fucking nerds and their e-sports, they will never be cool.

as long as they get paid and i get to watch it on TV like they do in korea, its all good.

high school ended years ago son, popularity doesn’t matter anymore.

Being grown adults, yes, “popularity” shouldn’t deter us from doing whatever we enjoy (as long as they’re within bounds of reasonable law).

But becoming an any kind of professional requires admission by others, especially if the intention is to make lucrative earnings as a entertainer for the masses - such as musicians, actors, and athletes. You can’t expect or force the general audience to like something just because you do. A lot more people play video games these days, but it’s still a nerdy ass activity. Pro athletes are admired by men and women of all ages, while gamers for most part are admired by only select few among the already niche group of male gamers.

If you are already aware that gaming is not a “popular” activity by the standard of the general masses, then you already have a answer of why there is no point to push the idea of “pro gaming” (again, I refuse to use the term “e-sports” because video games and sports should not be compared in any way).

What kind of money are these guys making?

Also there is a bar on broadway called Chao Bistro, they do SC nerd nights and stream championships for your kind.

Does it really matter? I mean, if you could live off of what you loved doing, I’m sure anyone would take a job like that. It doesn’t matter if they own twelve yachts while playing video games for a living so long as they get paid for what they enjoy doing.

Disregarding sponsors, getting paid by teams, and extra stuff, if you were to win every major tournament including the monthly GSL in Korea, $500-$600,000 a year? Probably more. And that’s for SC2 which isn’t even as popular as Brood War yet

Edit: No single player has made this much yet because of how inconsistent tournament results have been. This is from adding up roughly how much the top has made
