Oh yeah…I haven’t seen anything Rockstar related. That is kinda weird, maybe Sonichuman can dig something up.
So today’s the last day right? We expecting any reveals today?
The fact that I haven’t seen anything about this game means it’s not coming out this year.
It’s very “fancy,” with greater implications than gaming. 10+ years from now the CE industry will be borrowing from Kinect tech, not Wii.
I like kotaku math…
20000 yen = 250 bucks and 20000 yen = 249.99
Ummmmm
^ Kotaku sucks. Stop going to their site.
Hyped for Arkham City, Mass Effect 3, and Starhawk.
Kotaku is trash.
No word of a lie, I thought the exact same thing some time ago. We should totally be all homo for each other. No homo.
Kotaku is a tabloid, you go there for the trash
Screw all the WiiU news I want to hear more about VR headsets making a come back and peripherals that let me feel my characters pain - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13711335
Nintendo lost another 5% of their stock. People figured out that the resolution on the screen is 854x480. It’s not too bad but it certainly won’t have that high-def feeling. They’re trying to keep it as cheap but functional as possible.
I’d actually prefer it if Nintendo added more horsepower to the U and charged closer to $400. The console needs to, at the minimum, be capable of streaming to two controllers. I wouldn’t mind paying $100 more if the extra HP helps the console stay relevant 5 years from now. Not only in the eyes of gamers but more importantly, developers.
lmao you’ve got more money than sense then, wiiu would be become the new sega saturn. Wii is aimed at the casual gamer no way are they going to spend that much money.
If Nintendo doesn’t charge that much, then the re-sellers on Ebay will. Better for Nintendo to pocket that extra profit than the scalpers. If Nintendo is competent with their marketing then there’s no doubt people would be willing to spend that much. Good marketing over the next year coupled with a solid TGS and/or E3 2012 presentation can for sure drive up demand and consumers’ perceived value for the U. They could still add more power but charge a lower price but Nintendo doesn’t sell hardware at a loss. IMO the iPad isn’t worth $850 but people are willing pay that much because Apple does a good job selling the value of their products to them and I don’t think you can get much more casual than the iOS 99 cent gamer.
Do people buy iPads and such strictly for gaming though?
I think going by the announcement trailer Nintendo displayed at their conference they’re showing how you can do more with the console other than gaming. Such as video calling, file sharing, browsing, and sketching. When I was watching that trailer I actually thought to myself this is like an iPad, albeit a poor man’s one, but with buttons.
So what you’re saying is that most people dont buy an ipad (or similar device) with the intent of it being their main platform for gaming?
Day 1, yo, now I gotta get to watching this show someday
That’s something you’ll have to ask individual tablet owners and what they primarily use their devices for.
What I’m saying is if Nintendo wants to sell the Wii U for more than $300, and that’s only if they do what I’d like them to do which is add more horsepower, then they certainly have the capability of convincing consumers their console is worth that much.
Back to the iPad example. What Apple does well that allows them to charge up to $850 for their tablets is from them selling people the idea of the number of options they could perform with their products. Hence why one of their bullet points are always how there’s X number of apps available on iTunes. Consumers see that and think not only can I do A and B, but C, D, and E as well if I wanted to. That sort of thinking drives up the perceived value of a product and how much people are willing to pay for it.
When I was watching the Nintendo presser what I saw wasn’t just them trying to sell us a next-gen gaming box. If that was their goal they could have just thrown up a bunch of raw processing data and clock speeds on the screen and call it a day. No, what I saw was them talking about providing a new gameplay experience through their controller. Now, it’s harder to quantify and translate people’s own gaming experiences into a dollar value and the reason why some may have just wanted to skip straight to the tech demos and trailers showcasing next-gen graphics. I believe Nintendo understood that which is why their announcement trailer featured people doing things outside of just playing games.
Much like the iPad example Nintendo is telling us “Look at all the different ways you can use the Wii U!” while still staying true to its core competency, playing games. So instead of wasting 20 minutes trying to convince hordes of jaded gamers on experiences they took a page out of Apple’s keynote strategy and showed not only can you now do A (play games) but B (play games without a TV), C (use the controller to browse the net), D (Draw and share photos) and E (video calling), etc etc. That way if people see $400 as the price for the Wii U they think to themselves I’m not using it just as a gaming console but all of the above.
It really depends on what Nintendo does at their next major press conference and if they can elaborate further on those options. One concern however, and one I suspect will be a major selling point, is Nintendo’s online strategy and how it’ll be integrated. I do have a couple other ideas they could try. One, they could team up with a digital distributor such as Steam (very unlikely) or less unlikely, EA and their new Origin service. Nintendo could have you connect to Origin from the controller to download EA content to the console. Partnering up with streaming sites such as YouTube, NetFlix, and social sites like Facebook would also help Nintendo appeal to the casual markets.
Get hyped

@ The Kinect/360 thing from earlier
Microsoft didn’t fuck up on 360 or Kinect commercially. By all accounts though I think 360 SHOULD have failed with the bullshit that people have to deal with. Microsoft got lucky that it had a whole year or so to itself during this generation and the fact that PS3 was absurdly priced cause I can Guarandamntee that if PS3 was more competitively priced when it came out then people wouldn’t have been so quick to just deal with all those technical problems. Hearing stories of several people going through their 3rd or 4th xbox is ridiculous. Slim still has a couple of problems but it’s nowhere near as bad.
Kinda sucks that I can’t reply to posts on seperate pages…I hope SRK fixes that.
