dj n00bz here; Actually, dj seclusion to be honest. haven’t bought another set of technics 1200 but thus far due to space constraints i’m running the new torque exponent w/ trigger finger m-audio o2 keyboard & fast track (the latter three got for free b4 my old chumpusa shut down)
and yes dyce you’re right on with hospital amongst many others I know like ie. renegade and virus
I totally feel you on this, but you have to understand…The only exposure to Dnb/Jungle we have here in America IS the big names, everything else you have to find by luck or through connections. You can’t turn on the radio here and tune to your local DnB station and listen for upcoming artists (I’m not too familiar with Satellite radio though, I know they have a dnb station, but I don’t know what/who they mainly play). DnB/Jungle is not nearly as popular here as it is in other parts of the world, so the vast majority of us won’t hear of really good producers with little exposure.
I try my hardest to find the lesser knowns who are as good or better than those ‘mainstream’ artists you name. I can’t count how many times I’ve listened to a random DnB mix I’ve stumbled upon, heard a track that was amazing, asked around for a track ID, and come to find out it’s produced by someone I’ve never heard of. I love the feeling of discovering new talent, but it’s not easy to do, being here in the US, the mentality of a lot of places is to only play the most exposed, or the most popular.
Plus, there is A LOT of crap to sift through.
I love the way his music sounds. It’s really sharp and compact. Plus the level of dedication he has for adding something unique to every snare, hi hat, synth filter, etc, really amazes me. Every hit sounds a little different from the others, like he is actually playing the drums and bass (which he actually does in a lot of tracks, seeing him playing bass live is something else) and you can hear all the human subtleties of every note. Compared to others artists, where everything is hit exactly the same, which once again I don’t mind at all.
All of that does not apply to ‘Hello Everything’ though, he really took a step down in production on that album, still good though. I’m talking mostly Hard Normal Daddy, Feed Me Weird Things, Go Plastic, Ultravisitor, Big Loada stuff. So good.
Not to defend him too much, since I know everyone has their own personal tastes, but the main reason SP appeals to me is because he is actually well versed in music theory and song structure. I know of a lot of great IDM artists who can’t even read sheet music. They have a more random sound, which I also appreciate, but when I need to go on a journey through the mind, Squarepusher beats most other hands down for me. Venetian Snares works too.
I’m most likely just biased as hell, so different strokes for different folks.
Cool, I have 2 Technics SL1200-MK5’s with Carl Cox styli, next time I buy carts and needles I am switching back over to the shure m44-7’s. Using a Numark Dm1050 mixer for the moment, my DJM-800 burnt out on me a while ago and I haven’t had the money to replace it yet. Serato Scratch live for more portable play, and Technics RP-DH1200 headphones.
I’m not too big on Jungle/DnB much anymore. The occasional IDM-esque stuff. Anyway, for anyone big on Jungle you would do well to track these down by any means necessary.
Also track down the tune “Link - Amazon Amenity [Chameleon remix]”
On the limewax thing i ment just better, of course it’s just my opinion. http://www.imorecords.com/View/19130/ is a good example how hard aggressive dnb should be, check the acid rain (vip) soundfile
Yeah pretty much she’s definently appeals to the more commercial side
Nah i just use HWND for its archive, what’s b2vos?
yeah the current scene is poor, but in my opinon it’s been that way since 96, of course there’s allways gonna be good stuff coming out just not as much back between 1992 1995 you was spoilt for choice new good tunes dropping weekly, for me now you’ll be lucky to get a really good tune once every couple of months.
personally i think the creativity has vanished everybody in there selective sub genres sound pretty much the same.
my beef is people like pendulem sub focus hazard clipz countless others all there stuff sounds exactly the same, i mean you put a pendulem track on and you know it’s a pendulem track dont matter which one you know it’s pendulem because every track is so similer which i think it’s not really a good thing.
I agree with you there’s allmost NOOOOO bass at all it’s all to high pitched even with all these so called darkside artists like tech itch, dylan endless others it sounds bassless in fact it sounds far far to synthetic.
when i got back into drum and bass i started to dl sets from kool fm and i was like “ok this aint great but it’s ok” as time went on and i started to collect records and play each tune i thought i liked individually i started to realise that current dnb was lacking something.
