The Definitive Asian Comic Book Characters List

oddly enough i always had image of him bein asian in my head…dunno why.

I’m Latino.

I say you should count Storm Shadow still even though he started out as a toy. Marvel had a hand in the cartoon and the comics. That one issue that had Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow and no dialog at all, the famous ‘Silent Issue’ was one of the greatest things in comics ever.

Honestly, enough with the nitpicking regarding the definitions of Asians in the context of this thread. It’s obvious what we’re looking for here, and there’s no need to “prove” India is in Asia - we all know that. It’s just that if we include India, then we’d have to include Russia, Saudi-Arabia, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan…I mean, come on - that just ruins the fun. In the same way, we never really refer to Puerto Ricans or guys from Guam as Americans. …I mean, you CAN, if you were like a completely obsessive nitpicker…but I mean…you know. I think my point is made.

So we’re just talking in regards to the squinty eyed, rice eating comic book characters in this thread. Feel free to make a new, more accurate Asian Comic Book Characters thread, where Russians and Indians and whoever are also included - I’ll gladly contribute to that thread as well.

This should be in now way taken as an offense towards Indian people - I personally love Indian people. I took a taxi the other week, and the Indian guy driving it was very courteous and an excellent cab driver - no one loves Indians more that I do.

  • Damn me, I got caught on the Tripli-Kate thing by Damny as well. I’m an ass, I’m sorry. I was just following Shengy’s lead, and I just assumed that he knew what the hell he was talking about…which I obviously now know to be folly, and I will never make the same mistake again. YOU’VE LED ME ASTRAY, SHENG-LONG! I TRUSTED YOU, MAN

  • Fin Fang Foom is Asian, we reject Marvel’s racist reconning of him into an alien. He is ours, get your own ancient giant dragon monster.

  • I also agree with the whole licensed property thing, and that’s the reason I haven’t brought up Street Fighter characters yet. Comic book adaptations of existing properties shouldn’t count - if they have already been more prominently established in another medium outside of comics, then they shouldn’t count. Because then that also opens up a huge can of worms because like almost every popular movie, television show, video game or whatever has been in at least one comic book adaptation - we’ll have to just start listing all the Asians in popular media, which is beyond the scope of this thread.

  • G.I.Joe the television series was originally based on the toy line by Hasbro and the comic book title by Marvel. Thus…Storm Shadow is still a valid entry on the list, and the high ass kicking integrity of the list is maintained.

  • I always thought Xorn was Jewish all throughout. Was this ever changed, or did I just not understand Planet X correctly? In my defense though, Morrison was tripping on some particularly potent acid for the entire second half of that run.

  • Would Spliter (TMNT) be classified as Asian? I mean…yeah, he’s a mutated rat…but he was born in Japan and trained by a Japanese dude…so…what’s the call there? Or would this just apply to human ethnicities?

Do dead people count? If so -

The Ancient One - Dr. Strange’s old master from Tibet. Killed by Shuma-Gorath lol! :wgrin:

Ogun - Wolverine’s old Japanese sword master. Even though he’s dead his spirit comes back now and then to mess with Logan san…

Who the hell understands “Planet X” correctly, especially when Excalibur basically retconned the shit out of it with but a mere sentence less than four months later? If we’re talking solely about Planet X within itself, then “Xorn” was Jewish because he was Magneto in (awesome) disguise. If you go beyond that, though, then the entirety of “Xorn’s” existence is called into question because of the two things that happened after that, both of which ended up being abortive: Magneto on the cast of Excalibur dismissing him as an IMPOSTER! & that other Xorn showing up who, AFAIK, has never been mentioned again except maybe in New Excalibur since Juggernaut and Nocturne are there–this would mean that Xorn was actually Chinese–and then the whole “Wanda is Uber now” thing meaning that she could have made it so that Xorn was a Chinese-Jew who just happened to look like her father and having all his powers and mannerisms and personality…

…Ugh, I’m making myself pissed off at Wanda again. Therefore, I’ll just stop since I’m sure you knew all that already and I don’t want to have to start go into the whole “Collective” bullshit top of that.

electricity surges up behind me dramatically

XOORRRNNNNNNN!!!

…Anyway, I say we just count the second Xorn that turned up even though he will probably never ever show up again. We also need to count that Collective Man guy that China had as well if didn’t already–I can’t see the first page anymore when posting…

As for Splinter, we should definitely count him if we’re counting the Shredder and Fin Fang Foom given that they are both aliens (now).

Oh, and speaking of racist, did we get Chop-Chop from Blackhawk already?

Excalipoor EDIT: Speaking of the short-lived Excalibur, wasn’t that “Wicked” girl who could command those specter-like things Asian?

If we are talking racism there’s that Dr. Strange villain, the god named The Living Buddha. He looks like a gigantic overweight Buddha statue and of course he is evil. Whoa talk about embracing other cultures and religions… I only know of him becaused he served under Shuma-Gorath lol.

EDIT: Anyone see the new Flash Gordon TV show? Ming the Merciless is no longer obviously asian in design, he’s just a regular white guy! No long fingernails, no make up, nothing. Just a regular caucasian! Everything is so PC nowadays… Yeash they could of at least gave the guy green skin or something…

If we’re not including Kazakhstan, we might as well just close the thread right now.

I don’t think Angie is Asian. She might be, because she’s really smart, but I am not sure. Her replacement in the Transfer of Power arc was Japanese, though.

So about the whole Indian thing, I’m thinking it may be best to let them have their own list. Clinty makes sense here.

Latino? I thought you were black. Wasn’t your picture in that one issue of Street Fighter? Man, I’ve been living a lie…

Very well, then. We shall continue to claim the GI Joe characters.

He’s Jewish.

I should have listed him earlier when I slapped Shredder and Karai on the list. We’re claiming him.

Wait, did you say “we”? You’re Asian as well? I thought you were black. My mistake. Anyway, that whole Xorn in China thing that Chuck Austen wrote? It never happened. AT ALL

I looked her up on wikipedia but she didn’t seem Asian to me. Well, okay, I stopped reading her entry once I saw that she was created by Claremont in Excalibur #1, but I don’t think we need to claim her.

Fixed.

Anyway, I finally remembered Radioactive Man, but I see we have him on the list.

However, and this is understandable considering she’s the first to die, we’re missing Sway from “Deadly Genesis”.

Also, can we count Machine Man a.k.a. Aaron Stack?

Racial EDIT: Zeph, I’m still black. Just using “we” was easier.

Good watching out again with Sway. Machine Man is Asian? I thought he was just a robot/android with a white man’s face. Well, if the white community doesn’t want to claim him, I don’t really mind another free agent pickup.

Cool, I thought I was going insane back there with unexpected racial revelations. I still can’t believe sano is Latino… You sure, sano?

Oh, no. He’s a machine, but his face looks more Asian than white to me.

Maybe it’s because of the whole Hapa thing and I can’t tell since half of the Asian kids are half-white nowadays.

Yeah I’m the guy with the red shirt holding the book up. And I’m sure I’m Latino lol my parents are from the Dominican Republic and I was born and raised in New York. There’s dark and light skin people in my family if that matters. Did you confuse me with the person behind me who Adam Warlock once told me was checking out my back issues?

Her mother is asian. Wolverine is only half her DNA.

All right, I will add her to the list for now. That isn’t an Asian-sounding name, though. Sounds like the White Man wrote her origin.

sano, what was the name of that one dude Batman teamed up with in the Hong Kong OGN?

Yeah I have that ha ha! The character is a Hong Kong comics character crossing over with Batman. I’ll look up the name but I don’t know about counting him unless you want to start tossing in Storm Riders and other HK heroes lol! But hey who knows maybe he’s chilling on one of those 52 Earths…

Night-Dragon.

Oh, that was actually a crossover? I had no idea. I thought he was a guy Moench made up. Moench loves all that stereotypical Asian mystic arts/martial arts stuff. I recently learned he also introduced Jong Li, the Earth’s ORIGINAL Green Lantern, baby!! Hahaha!

For Fu manchu why not go with Ironfist’s dad?

And just as the idea entered my head, you are ahead of me again. Figures.

Looking at the list, I’m surprised that we seemed to have missed The Mandarin of people, especially when we have his son.

…And then I saw that he was under “T”.

Anyway, Scrambler from the (original) Maruaders is/was apparently Asian–I’m guessing Korean from the name.
