The D.M.V. (DC_Maryland_Virginia)

  1. No disrepect… I know how tournaments go… good and bad. Trust me I’ve been doin it for years (10+ in the dmv area alone). My point overall were people jumping on Robin (whom Ive known just as long and have supported in the past when time was available) when its common nature for a tournament to NEVER run on time anyway and things to fall over when unexpected situations happen (like people not pre registering to help forsee numbers)… I respect robin an anyone else who helps in the community overall but I’m shocked at the backlash. I really think people have become spoiled. The top 8 got paid out regardless… if your not top 8 or didnt make it out of pools or whatever ya complaint factor should shouldnt even count. If you made top 8 then you have a right to say your point.

  2. Bit of pride cause of events?? I’ve watched some of these players grow up (literally) if not been like a mentor to some in the fighting game community overall. My point again was the value of TEAM TOURNAMENTS BEFORE THE TOURNY STARTS [separate rant]. That being from my knowledge of tournies over the years and see how time is a major factor when renting out venues I question why even have them when things (singles for every game) need to have started. I couldn’t care less about it being a area vs area…we’ve had civil issues for years. Hell do you even know there was a time where bmore took on maryland itself?? So again… understand my question as in value to the tournament format. I rather see said ‘team vs team’ tournys at the end of a tournament… like a bonus feature.

The only legit purpose behind team tournaments is trying to get 9 players money instead of 3. That, I can understand, but these aren’t team games.

To expand upon that, you want people to travel to your tournaments and some guys just aren’t going to do it unless they think they might get money. Team tournament might be their only shot at it.

team tournaments are stupid
and they take too much fucking time
unless it’s cvs2 with people passing the stick for the next character
single elimination, one game only

hope you are feeling alright strogg

but you know there’d be some jackass that would want to switch sticks and button check midround

anyone interested in the area interested in a brand new 7" samsung galaxy tab? it’s the sprint one and i believe it is already unlocked, and i know it’s rootable. i won it in the pepsi/taco bell contest and i am trying to sell it to buy a new camera.

here is the pic

anyone interested, let me know.

Gimpy+Koop you remember the gametime days, where we stayed till 4am?

ECT 2000 when Justin beat Ricky at like 8am monday morning on memorial day when the tourney was supposed to end sunday night?

I get like 40-50 more entries that I can expect or the venue can handle, it’s 2am… and it’s pot splitting time.

I made some mistakes that became behemoths when you have a tourney that size… but I’m kind of amazed I actually got to top 8 for each game.

Beginning our next monthly, certain things will happen.

  1. I or my staff will control or own every tourney setup. They will all be standardized/updated/and have the nessesary games. All other setups are BYOC and not for tourney.
  2. One system will be chosen per game.
  3. Registration will be done in multiple steps, with checks and balances between them. You pay your venue fee, good. Then you go to your specific games tourney director and check in with him. You’re in 4 tourneys? check in with 4 directors to make sure you’re in the system, paid, and in the bracket. The tourney directors will also check that you have THE REQUIRED CONTROLLER FOR YOUR GAME if you don’t you can rent one from the tourney as well as deposit your driver’s liscense or you’re not allowed to play.
  4. set staff. Staff will be set per game before the tourney. they will be in charge of registration and bracket running for that game only.
5)Pools or Pods. For every say 16 or so people that enter and are there on time, start the tourney for them and the top 2/4 advance out. Allow early entrants to request later pools if they want to avoid their buddy. Between that and the hard fact that later pools will be more difficult, will encourage people to arrive early.
6)Get damdai to fix tonamento’s “undo” and “misclick” problems or find better software.
  5. display brackets via projectors
  6. have a maximum of two setups per 6 foot table with 4 chairs per setup.
  7. have two setups for the stream to switch between and lower downtime.

All this I guarantee. No whining, either.

i’m at xanadu, anyone wanna beat me up in some ae?, otherwise i’m heading home

Hope you’re alright Jeremy.

whelp, going home

Just realized that RyRy won the SFIV & Tekken tourneys at Otakon 2009.

Ahhhh. GT till 4am. Good times. But on the real, Robin is probably on of the few guys who run tournaments that is a easy person to get along with. Trust me, I’ve been on the tourney scene (just like the OGs in this thread) and we’ve some across some shady tournament organizers and ones who were just mean spirited. As far as I know, Robin has never screwed anyone over or made them not want to come to a tournament he’s running. Robin stepped in when the uncertainty of the tournament scene in the DMV a major topic. A little history for the youngins. Before Robin, we had John. John was a short filipino guy with glasses who was cooler than a brand new AC. John use to work at GT and he was the main tournament organizer. He also ran tournaments with honor and respect too. But then he moved to NY and I think he started doing this up at CTF. Enter Robin…nuff said.

Classic points indeed… i know its ‘old’ but still people prepared for things of this nature (staying late…adjusting the matches…etc.)

Oh and add:

  1. eliminate ‘extra activities’ (money matches, team tournys) to post tourny timeline.

Again props for continuing to make it happen (an showing you can pull the numbers STILL). I hope next time people will pre reg (if they dont just prep for 30+ extra anyway)…

KOF XIII just got officially announced for a console debut @ Otakon this year. Mad boosted.

shoutouts to Otakon staff getting their own news a week later than everyone else.

At least I will see if my KOF XIII practice has paid off.

Sup DMV

Moved here recently but I couldn’t find the time to head down to Xanadu since I usually finish work around midnight. Gonna shift tomorrow’s schedule a bit and if I can make it I’ll have a few spots in the car if anyone needs a ride (PM me).

Understood. I have full respect for Robin and the fact he’s been running tournaments for a while (I’ve been to 3 of his since Vanilla). He has always done good shit, though no matter what tournament I’ve been to (Robin’s, C3 or otherwise) I know they start late and they run late. Just a matter of fact. Pretty thankful to Robin overall as well, since he let me and Steve stay at his place after the tournament, and I’d be more than willing to help out with the next tournament. No need to discuss the team tournament, as I agree with you fully. Should be ran after, for obvious reasons.

On another note, I was excited to see that MD nearly took all four Top 8 spots in MvC3 Pool A (Steve and Offstein in Winners, myself in Losers) with Meeps nearly taking the 4th spot. Mike P did extremely well and nearly made Top 8 as well, so seeing Xanadu do some good damage is exciting for myself, who until recently really never had a “group” of players that I associate myself with. I’m sure your old man experiences are far greater and date back to before me, but let me have my moments old man!

Edit: On a side note, Steve H’s dream job.

Lol at all this old man talk

Just hope you can make it to “old man talk”.

anyone looking for last minute EVO trip check this out.

i just checked the dates I’m staying (thursday - monday) and it’s like $40 or $50 cheaper after taxes with that deal than it is with the Evo discount.
