The Current State of the World thread

so the European Union is close to collapse?!?!
and if it does…so too the Euro currency dies with it, and leads the rest of the globe into economic disaster???
another possible Great Depression!!!

ahem. i’d be more worried…if i hadn’t saved all my pennies for a rainy day…since i was 9.
trillions of pennies.
stacks. stacks. and more 6 foot high stacks of pennies.
who looks crazy now!!!

We’re all a little crazy man. Only a sick person can be well adjusted to a sick world.

The idea is profoundly good but I’m just not sure it will catch on like the OWS movement.

It was launched on OWS. Here a vid showing the organization;s progress after one week. The video is two months old.

I signed some petitions from Wolf PAC or something. Can’t remember. Something dealing with getting money out of politics.

I love seeing different activist organizations jiving together, and how it’s being shown in the light thanks to the Occupy Movement.

I guess controversy is key, because I never knew about this shit, or everything that was going on before Occupy.

i wonder who’ll make the 666th post on this thread.
A jinx & pox on thee.

and things are heating up in ME. just a heads up

And this is pretty interesting. http://googlequitthechamber.org/

It’s a petition and a poll allowing people to vote on which reasons they think are important for Google to quit the US chamber of commerce.

Those two Muslim girls kissing is kind of hot, and I don’t even usually like girl-on-girl.

Sorry.

Carry on.

Still annoyed that there’s still debate (read as wasted time and money) over same sex marriage.

Here’s a history lesson on some Americans.

It’s sad man.

Yeah yeah I heard it all before… naw fuck that. It’s sad and it’s wrong. And we haven’t learned. We’re still screwing over large numbers of people all over the world so some of us can have a little bit more.

In the name of God, in the name of our cultural superiority, in the name of Capitalism and Democracy, in an effort to prevent the spread of Communism, in an effort to stop the “War on Terror”.

Come on America, what bullshit reason are you going to give me next to oppress other populations?

How about domestic populations? Austerity measures; in an effort to reduce the deficit… wait hold on a second. We gave the banks and corporations $700 billion dollars in TARP in 2008 alone, and they gave themselves million dollar bonuses at the end of that same year? Why not make them the ones who pay to reduce the deficit?

Just to add some fuel to the fire:

its a lot, but no. I can’t and won’t stand behind that man’s wish. We are way past giving these people their land back. (yes im a total dick)

I think that’s it’s important to examine stuff like this. Cases of oppression, civil injustice, imperialism. Whether it’s here, in the Middle East, Central America. Whether it is 100 years ago, 50 years ago, or it’s currently happening. It’s important to know that it does exist, and it’s what happens when “people of good conscience remain silent”.

I don’t think you’re a dick. Not trying to guilt trip anybody, just trying to share some knowledge for anybody that is listening.

I know, I just said a statement. Throwing issues like this under the rug does nobody no good. Well it actually does good for the guy trying to enjoy his steak from teh comfort of his house. The problem wit saying anything, is that…really what good does it do???

You can talk about it, but if people don’t care, they ridicule you and attack you. I’d go to say, things like this happen when “stupid people stay stupid”

On the subject though, this shouldn’t put anybody in a guilt trip. If it does, well…I don’t know what to say, its not like you put them there personally, or your fascination with Jersey shore is continuously forcing them there.

It’s a tricky thing.

Showing people images of destroyed buildings, sad families, and the foreigner terrorists was enough for many people to be convinced that we needed war for retribution of 9/11. I was one of them, back before I knew any better. Back before I knew the whole story. It was enough to make us fearful and to make us think that terrorists=radical Muslims. At least where I was from, and with my family that was the idea. The media linked Islam with terrorism in our minds.

If opinions can be so easily swayed, then maybe if we can show them images of things that we think are important than we can inspire thoughts that “break the mold”. Like that movie “Inception”, maybe we can plant ideas. Like in order to get someone to understand justice, we can show them images and examples of injustice. We can show them images or examples of the horrors of war, in order for them to understand the value of human life and the need for peace.

Everyone has been inspired before. No matter how lame or cliche you might think it is.

Long story short…

We don’t need to be stuck in the constraints of how the world is. Once we see the strings, the system, “the code”, we should be able to lift ourselves above it. We should be able to change things from how they are… to how we think they should be, or how they ought to be. If no place else then only in ourselves and in our minds. And through us, the individuals, this change will reverberate in a ripple effect with others we come in contact with. This is the idea behind the saying of “lead by example.” Or “be the change you want to see”.

It might seem illogical. But how logical are feelings of helplessness or futility? What do they accomplish? Nothing really. The question becomes is it more logical to put these thoughts aside and follow your path? Or is it more logical to change or suppress our beliefs or ideals (whatever they might be)?

Those people who didn’t “bow out” to the pressures of society are the ones who end up being remembered as heroes, and have the most lasting impacts. Whether they are mentioned by name or they are just a face in a crowd of people who fought for something better.

Random rant about wealth. I’m actually really curious what people think about my rant weather it’s positive or negative.

First off, a little story.
I remember a long time ago, I started working a summer job. One of my coworkers, who had worked the job the year before, mentioned that the job was good because I’d always get 40 hours. Apparently the job over hired employees in the begining of the summer. In the begining, everyone only got 20 hours a week max. After time, however, most of the employees either got fired or quit. Most people that got hired, were apparently very stupid. After time, my coworker garunteed garunteed that everyone that stuck around would get atleast 40 hours a week, if not more, if they wanted the hours.

That was last year, but during the summer which I worked, the complete opposite happened. After the first month, virtually nobody got fired, everybody stuck around, and most people were very good employees. I remember the older employees constantly complained, for the first month or so, about only getting 20 hours a week. Eventually, many of the older employees, and some of the new employees, took matters into their own hands. They started bullying certain employees, pretty hardcore, in the hopes that they could get people to quit the job. They complained endlessly to the supervisors about how “stupid, incompetent, and unprofessional” their coworkers were, when that was not the case at all, most of the time. Eventually many of the people quit, because of bullying, and all the other employees got more many more hours.

Now, could the older employees have gotten more hours if they worked harder, provided better service, etc. Maybe…I saw many people try “addition” approach, you know to better themselves to get ahead, and it didn’t work out. Since addition didn’t work out, they resorted to “subtraction”. By eliminating other coworkers through bullying, namecalling, and other negativity… they ended up getting more hours for themselves.

sigh I’m not really praising OR rejecting what happened there, but it did happen; and that sort of situation isn’t uncommon at all-it happens all over the place.

In the current…I dunno…business world, there are so many different types of business out there that are much more complicated then my little example story. In my example story, about 50 or so people all had the same job duties, wheras in most workplaces people have completely different roles. However, in most corporate structures, a few people get more money then everyone else. Or rather, a few people get to make decisions where all the “income” will be distrubuted.

Now, imagine a system, where everyone got paid an equal amount of the profits- or approximately the same amount. Lets say, for example, we’re talking about a company like fed x. Let’s say the company tried very hard to increase corporate earnings, gain market share, and it worked slightly…but not enough to make a difference. In a system where everyone got the same amount of money, if jobs got eliminated everyone’s salary would increase. Let’s say an office of 40 employees, eliminated one worker that made 40 G’s per year. That’s a 1,000 dollar increase for every worker. It would literally be in everyone’s interest to be a complate asshole that wants to fire everyone else. It might be more work for everyone else, but for an 1,000 dollar raise per year, many people would be willing to work harder. lol many people would be all about addition thru subtraction.

Don’t get me wrong, In the current system, many people are assholes and want to cut all their co-workers for all sorts of reasons. But in the current system, well, a simplified notion of the current system, cutting your coworkers, is stupid. Will cutting people increase corporate profits, for the wealthy elite it will, but for the vast majority of people, it will just mean more work. As many people know, if a coworker gets fired, and everyone has to work harder, your boss most likely will not give you a raise, or a promotion.

Does any of that make sense? The whole notion of, eliminating people so that there are less people and everyone else is more wealthy is terrifying to me. In work type environments, i often feel like my co-workers feel that eliminating their competition, will benefit them. I like the notion, that if someone tries to cut their coworkers, only the boss will benefit, and everyone else will just have to work harder for the same pay. Often times that’s not the case, but still…

I read it, and I’ve had a similar experience at a small business I used to work for. A lot of companies just don’t make enough money to support the amount of workers they need, or if they do they try and cut corners to get people to work harder for less (and more profits for them).

Yes you’re right. The more money that is concentrated in the hands of the few, means that there is less to go around for everybody else. As it stands the top 1% owns 40% of the total wealth in the US. The top 10% owns 90% of the wealth, so the other bottom 90% of the population is left to split 10% of the wealth.

Capitalism itself is a game of musical chairs. There will never be enough money for everyone because our money is created from debt, and taken back with interest. So basically there will always be an odd man out, the one that doesn’t make it.

Here’s a vid that explains how we create money: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EewGMBOB4Gg#t=6m59s
