The Computer/Tech/Gadgets/Software Thread

Solid choice for a graphics card. I bought one recently and it runs Crysis at 30-35 fps with everything turned on smoothly.

BFG? XFX? Zotac? Palit/Gainward?

I’v been using Google Chrome all morning.

I’m starting to fall in love. Certain things show up in Chrome that doesn’t show up in Opera.

I used this to remove the Recovery Console on my XP machine recently. Works like a charm.

LOL. The phone is pretty badass though.

I use Media Player Classic. I don’t like VLC Player for some reason.

Like what? I was thinking of using Chrome but I still can’t see any reason to switch.

Avira’s AntiVir(us) is what i currently use for anti-virus. not that i ever get anything, but always good to be on the save side.

I’m not sure of any really recent head-to-head’s that have been done with free AV’s, but last i checked, Avira had the better detection rate, and the best rate of detecting things not in its database yet (Heuristic detection i think its called?)

The main issue some people might have with it is that it WILL give you a pop up about its full version when it updates. I however have had it updating in the wee hours of the morning (3 or 4 am) so ill see it when i wake up, and never again that day.

Also, its always a good idea to have CommonSense 2009 installed

Its mostly stuff related to Google Reader. For example, you can set your online status on or off in Google Reader while using Chrome, and also next/previous is available in posts while browsing feeds in Chrome.

Its obviously just added functionality between Google products though.

I’m not gonna switch either, for the simple fact there’s still no ad blocking in Chrome, but you never know. They literally release a new update every week. They’re up to 4.0 now already.

I like google chrome because its simple as fuck. No frills. And its light on the system resources.

Hell yeah Chrome is the shit. I’ve been using it ever since it came out and never looked back.
The address/search bar and the movable tabs at the top are my favorite features. I used to have to run firefox for certain websites that won’t load correctly but that’s all been fixed in the latest Chrome version.

That’s why I’m loving it too.

I’m def keeping it installed this time, now that I’ve played with it longer than I have in the past.

My only things are Chrome needs some kind of ad blocking down the line that doesn’t involve using a proxy.

And right now, it doesn’t play well with rss feeds. If you click a feed, its a jumbled pile of text… the same way Opera used to be.

I’m a fan of MPC as well. Mainly because you can set it to be the movie only in a thin screen [with no PLAY/FF/ETC buttons]. For a sleek lover such as myself, that shit is tops. As for other stuff, I’ll list shit that I use/like.

Media

Videos: MPC or VLC. Both good, but I prefer MPC thanks to its minimalism mode. Does VLC have one? If it does, I never found it.
Music: Foobar. Wish I knew how to customize the skin though. Lotta work last I investigated. Seems light too, as it doesn’t make my fan on my PC go WHIIIIIRRRR! like WMP does.

Computer Shit

Antivirus: Tried AVG, Avast and Avira. I like Avira. Simple interface. Click and go. The other ones gave me a headache. Just clean my fuckin’ machine when I open you. Is that too much to ask?
SpyBot: It’s been around forever and as far as I know it works. So get it if you have even the slightest bit of paranoia after clicking a link and you go, “What the fuck is this!?” mash back button Get it.
CCleaner: Good to have since it cleans your shit, like the Recycle Bin and Internet stuffs. Handy if your computer is shared by many hands and watchful eyes. In other words, if you surf porn like it sustains your life force. Plus it can uninstall stuff too.
Revo Uninstaller: I can’t remember if CCleaner was the same but Revo helped me uninstall some piece of shit program that said it couldn’t do it on its own. Handy piece right here. One of them cleans out folders that programs leave behind and registries, but like I said I can’t remember what does what.

Internet

Firefox: Add-ons make this a no brainer for me, especially the block add-on. WINK.

That’s all that comes to mind. Shit that I use. I’ll keep an eye on this thread as it’s sure to bring up some interesting stuff that I may find useful later.

On my PC I have about 21 processes running. On this new laptop there’re over fucking 65! Most of them are HP processes, though. I gotta look up what do what then disable and delete the ones I don’t need.

I just went from a 5mbps to 15mbps connection, and oh man is there ever a difference, especially on GGPO and when downloading.

I don’t like VLC. It uses its own internal codecs, even if you have “use system codecs” checked in the options. This is an issue that’s talked about all over the net.

This wouldn’t normally be an issue, but some old divx/xvid videos tend to look bad unless you’re using the newest codecs. VLC’s internal codecs must be super outdated.

I actually did testing with about 7-8 players. Right now MPC is my top player, followed by The KMplayer and SMplayer.

Sas, you should peep deviantart for some foobar skins.

Newer ones are pre-loaded with the plugins needed, so all you have to do is extract them to the foobar directory and load it in the program.

Oh wow, I didn’t the newer ones might come with the plug-ins needed. Good lookin’ out GeoG2. Here’s hoping they have one I like. Anime’s aight by me, but I ain’t trying to have no DBZ Foobar player or something. I need something suhfistakated. B)

Yeah some of those guys are nice enough to include the plugins needed for their skins.

I’ve downloaded bout 4 or so recently uploaded skins with the plugins already included.

I only use 2 skins, and both are by the same guy. He’s a genius for this setup… I can click a button and see a bio and images of the artist I’m listening to.

For my techwhores out there, running this on my HTC Touch Pro while watching movies on my PC is pretty awesome. I’m just waiting for the joystick emulation to support 64 bit OSes. I just wish I could get bluetooth connections to a consistent point.

Any opinions on these speakers? I’m trying to use some gift cards that I have.

I’m checking out the Foobar Player right now. I hate using Windows Media Player.

If you used WMP for both audio and video, you should check out JetAudio.

Only reason I still don’t have it is cause it didn’t play mk4 files right.

I use MPC for video files. Never bothered installing an audio player until now. I used to have Winamp, but I didn’t like it either.

I like the Foobar Player. Very simple. What does JetAudio offer?
