The Computer/Tech/Gadgets/Software Thread

Sandisk or Iomega are my picks.

Any external storage device I have is usually one of those two brands.

Yeah, I got a couple of 2GB Sandisk MicroSDs for the netbook. Of course I have to tuck them into a media reader constantly, for fear of losing them, which I’ve already did 3 times now.

:bluu:

I may or may not have posted this before, but for Chrome users:

22 extensions/addons for Chrome. Make sure to use the newest 4.0 beta for these.

You mean 4x512?

Have you guys seen the new ATi 58xx series? On one of the youtube videos somebody compared the amount of GFLOPs certain consoles put out (I’m not sure if he pulled it out of his ass or not) but the new 58xx series churns out 2.7TFLOPS compared to the Xbox360’s 240GFLOPS and the PS3’s 200GFLOPS… :xeye:

The next nVidia card will most likely put out the same amount of TFLOPs as the 58xx. (or better :bgrin:)

Why would he mean 4x512?

Anything but Western Digital. Those bitches have a history of one day not showing up as a storage drive, thus you lose ALL your shit. No computer you connect it to by ANY means will detect it when this happens.

That shit looks hella broken. :wow:

I don’t think there are any good HDD manufacturers anymore. I’ve never had a problem with WD though, I actually have a 1TB My book I just on got sale last week. No complaints yet. I have 2 internal WD’s too, on is still running strong 2002, the other since 2007.

All I know is avoid Maxtor/Seagate like the plague.

All my internal HDDs have been WD… no complaints here. I trust them the most when it comes to internals.

Never had any problems with WD. Actually I am recommending it. I have a WD passport that I bought a couple of months ago. It has all of my music, so I am gonna be bummed out big time if it fails on me.

QT Lite 3.0 Beta

http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/QT-Lite/1182968126/1

Works with iTunes 9. Yesss, finally… I can update my iPod.

MMS is live. I had to hack the IPCC file because Apple would only send the carrier file if you had 3.1 and I’m jailbroken so pass. The nostalgia wore off quickly…

I’ve got MMS, but haven’t been able to send or recieve a single pic txt. Shit will just freeze at a certain point.

Thanks ATT!

Hmm good question…is anyone else here running an i7 or I5 setup? Thoughts?opinions?

I went from socket 939 to 775 to i7…and fuck. Night and day difference in terms of performance.

It’s a multitasking BEAST.

I really can’t imagine anyone needing ‘gulftown’ tho.

6 cores…with Hyperthreading…WTF?

i’m considering migrating my current setup to an HTPC and building an i5 machine.

I’m about to go through the tiring task of migrating all my mail to Gmail from yahoo. Gonna have to go through 100+ sites changing the email address… ugh.

But in the end, it’ll be worth it.

Also, FeedDemon officially released their 3.0 stable release. This is the best RSS reader now, bar none. Its Google Reader and Twitter support is top notch.

I’m still a baby when it comes to RSS usage, but this is the type of thing that gets you excited and want to use it more (read: whore as many feeds as possible).

For users of Chrome (4.0) make sure you check filehippo.com every other day for updates. Chrome’s built-in update checker never seems to be accurate.

About to try new software called Gizmo Project: http://www.filehippo.com/download_gizmoproject/

Lets you IM from Yahoo and AIM, plus make calls from your PC to a phone. Been looking for something like this forever (Skype PC to phone calls aren’t free, apparently).

Oh shit, I thought he meant 1 4gig card, not 4 1 gig cards. I still don’t know why I said 4x512 though.

Keep everything you put on that external backed up elsewhere (like a Hammerspace or some other external). Trust me. WD mybook externals are known for that shit.

I’m on an i7 setup myself. I went from Socket 478 to Socket 1366, so It wasn’t a night and day difference for me, but more like the Dinosaur age then a time warp to this morning

Yeah I can’t imagine the average user needing 12 threads, IIRC there is a 24 thread processor Intel are working on too. crazy :looney:

Kim, remind me to up/send you Astra Build 118 later (the update that fixes Facebook chat).

I installed it yesterday and I’ve been able to use FB chat, so it works.

Also I tried Gizmo5 earlier. Solid program… I think it might be top 5 already as far as mutli-IM messengers go. My list would probably be:

  1. Trillian Astra (pro)
  2. Digsby
  3. Miranda IM (with assorted plugins)
  4. Pidgin
  5. Gizmo5
