The Computer/Tech/Gadgets/Software Thread

Opera is really awesome. Its uses the fewest resources out of maybe any browser, and is extremely lightweight.

My main beef is its rendering. Certain pages look different in Opera than other browsers because of the way it reads code.

Other than that, its amazing. Built in RSS reader, built in mail checker… even built in IRC chat.

Anyone try out Chrome 3.0 yet? I’m about to get it now, i hear/read it’s 25% faster than the last stable version. I thought it was already fast enough…

Edit: There are a bunch of new themes to customize Chrome with now (I’m using pencil sketch atm). I don’t really notice a speed boost though.

All this Google Chrome talk makes me want to try it out…again. I’m all for trying out new shit with my computer if I think it’s trustworthy. Opinion to be posted after installing and visiting various sites.

Edit: Shit this is fast. I installed the BETA for the fuck of it and so far it’s nice. Now…about that adblock thing that was mentioned earlier.

Edit 2: Wow my avatar is sluggish in this browser. Haha.

Edit 3: I think I’m going to stick with Chrome for now. The image loading rate is amazing and that’s what I’m fond of is images. Big + in my book.

Thx.

RE: Browsers

I like Chrome a lot as it is simple and clean. But Firefox has too many extensions that I love so I just can’t make that jump.

3 things:

  1. Doesn’t block as many ads as Adblock for Firefox.

  2. Its now discontinued.

  3. Works best with 4.0 beta, since this is the only Chrome that enables extensions/userscripts by default. Other versions of Chrome you have to go through extra work. All you’d have to do is download/install the Adsweep.crx extension.

After trying out the new FeedDemon… I love it. Sync with Google Reader is great, and its def better than having to open my browser all the time.

I also switched back to KMplayer, as the new version makes it a top 3 video player again.

Really happy about my current setup. Every program I have is resource friendly and useful.

Now I just have to worry about switching from Yahoo to Gmail…

Got my new Biostar mobo in today to fix my comp, runs like a champ now.
Now just to fix the parts that are in it and the fact that I’m running Vista xD

win7 runs a lot smoother and is considerably lighter on resources than Vista was even with tons of tweaks.

Finally tried Opera. I’m liking it so far. Geo how do you do the adblock for this browser?

I’ve only recently started using google reader…maybe I should get a feed reader software? Or maybe I should just use the one in opera? eh.

The one in Opera is pretty bad. I don’t like the lack of organization… when you click the feeds menu, all your feeds just show up in a long list.

But FeedDemon is definitely the way to go. Feed Reader is also extremely good, but FeedDemon has the best GR support that I’ve seen.

It gives you the file to download, and the directory to save it to. Afterwards you restart the browser.

There’s one major issue with this though: Many sites have started adding ads within videos. What this does is prevent certain videos from playing. For example, NFL.com highlights.

I need to get a new portable HD I already have a My book. is there a better on i should consider?

New versions of Google Chrome, Winzip, iTunes, and VLC Media Player are out.

After a year +, I’m a Firefox whore again.

At the end of the day, I came to this conclusion: As much as I hate the memory footprint, FF still performs very well/fast. It’d be one thing if it hogged memory and was bloggy/slow, but it isn’t… so I can live with this.

Opera is awesome, ppl know how I’ve praised it. But there are two flaws with it that I didn’t like.

Chrome is awesome, its been my baby for months now and I still have it installed. But it still feels incomplete in some areas. However it is in super active development, and new releases come out nearly weekly… so progress will remain fast.

Yeah. Firefox has a shit ton of problems for my personal setup, but its general awesomeness cancels them out. The only REALLY bad part about it is that firefox at school isn’t nearly as powerful as my home version.

What is everybody using for email? I just installed Thunderbird and Evolution, and I’m giving them a spin for a while.

I just lost a usb flash drive and am in search of another. I previously had an 8gb Sandisk Cruzer that I didn’t like very much. What’s a good brand to look into for reliability and speed?

i7 setup?

Well I’m back to do a “Nobody Asked You” follow up to my usage with Chrome.

Love it.

Seeing that there is actually an adblocker for Chrome (my only gripe), I may give it a shot. I need a fresh browser to look at, nowadays.

In other news, I got a 2x2GB of OCZ Gold sticks last night. I was running 4x1, but they were mixed pairs, and one of my Tracer modules burned out. RMA #2: ACTIVATE!
