The Computer/Tech/Gadgets/Software Thread

Alright, hit me up with the altered version when it comes up. Thanks for looking out man.

pwnage tool released by the devteam, but no jailbreak for 3GS yet. shouldn’t be too long before it’s ready but I don’t know that I even want to update with all of the bugginess I hear about 3.1.

I keep hearing all this talk about foobar. How good is it compared to Winamp (when you get plugins and such)? The thing I like about Winamp is that I can have Smart Playlists (known as Smart Views within winamp). It transfers music to (and manages music on) my MP3 Player reasonably well (though the smart playlists can’t be replicated).
What features does Foobar have that Winamp doesn’t.

Winamp is bloatware (with the default Bento skin). The main reason people like Foobar is because its lightweight and easier on resources in comparison, and focuses strictly on music (no video support or unnecessary crap).

The customization blows Winamp out of the water.

I have my Foobar setup to show album art and information/images of artists while I’m playing music. It also automatically scrobbles to my last.fm. It just ‘feels’ better.

I’m saying. I’ll take Foobar if it’s worth it over Winamp. But if I’m willing to look for all these customizations it needs, will it be better than Winamp for all the stuff I just listed?

I’m also looking for info on foobar as a possible winamp replacement

I’ll have to check out Foobar. I use Winamp as my default but am looking to try something new. Can you transfer/maintain your mp3 player through Foobar?

There’s a plugin for that.

I don’t know about smart playlists, but Foobar has multiple types of playlist options and has plugins for various other features people may or may not need.

It’s not for everyone tho. It’s not an “install and go” type of player like Winamp. If you’re not willing to configure/customize the hell out of it, you won’t get the most out of it.

New note-worthy updates:

FeedDemon - I’m sorry but, if you have 11 RC releases before you have an actual stable release, something is wrong. That aside, its probably my favorite RSS reader (very light and resource-friendly) I think I’m going to start using it again now that it has Google Reader support.

The KMplayer - This is kind of a big deal, since this prog hasn’t been updated since December 2008. This update features a slew of new features and improvements and I’m about to try it out. KMplayer, to this day, would still be installed if it handled playback of incomplete files better.

Also, Google Chrome 3.0 stable was released a couple days ago. Worth a look, if you aren’t already using the 4.0 beta (like me). But 4.0 is the reason Chrome is now my default (and only installed) browser.

Just discovered Aptana Studio, a free web and web app development IDE that’s pretty impressive. It and HTML-Kit are pretty far and away the best free options in that category…the WYSIWYG and site management products are still lagging.

Good call on Google Chrome, much less of a resource-hog then FireFox. Glad I finally checked it out.

imo.

I would switch to Google Chrome, but those add-ons has got me stuck on Firefox.

yeah I need adblock plus and firefox has the simple addon FTW

The only addons I used with FF was adblock and shareaholic.

I installed adsweeper for Chrome, which deletes many ads (not as much as FF does) and I have a shareaholic bookmarklet.

I also use a bookmarklet that gives me options for dealing with RSS feeds (automatically add to Google Reader, for example). So basically I have no need for FF now.

Hi gang,

My Western Digital external SATA HDD suddenly stopped working after 10 months use and no longer powers on when I plug it in and connect it to my PC. My tower/motherboard is old and I only have IDE connections for my internal hard drives so I can’t crack open the case of the external drive and put it in my tower.

Here are my questions / concerns:

*Is my drive dead? I know that hard drives typically start making a clicking noise when it starts to go bad and gives you some time to swap out the data. The hard drive never made that noise, it just simply ceased to power up.

*If it only is a power issue, how can I get it to turn on one last time so I can extract the data from it? I was thinking of going to a friends tower, which uses SATA internal drives and putting the guts of my external drive in his tower. Would that work? Has anyone tried it?

Thanks, in advance, guys. This is one of the smarter threads on the message board.

I know Adblocker and the Mouse Gestures add-on are replacable in other browsers like Opera but I use a lot of other add-ons like Skipscreen, which skips the waiting time for direct download links like Megaupload, Rapidshare, Zshare, etc. That’s why even though its a resource hog sometimes, I just can’t bring myself to leaving Firefox for good.

But I use Google Chrome sometimes. Frankly I haven’t tried using Opera. I’ve heard a lot of good things though. Maybe I’ll give it a shot someday.

what you can skip the stupid timmer on megaupload? damn why didn’t i find out about this earlier.

Yes it does. Try it out.

Media Monkey is the only player to go with.
