The Comprehensive Blanka Match Up Thread

^^ That’s why I was saying that it feels like Blanka’s success in the Cammy matchup is based upon how well the Cammy player knows the matchup, because she can shut down pretty much everything Blanka has going for him. Blanka has to work very hard and take a lot of risk that aren’t rewarded in his favor.

I guess this matchup just takes a lot of thinking outside of the box and looking for exploits in the Cammy player’s skillset rather than going by the numbers, because they are really against you if you think that way about this matchup…

Need some help with dictator…

Here’s my situation… it seems like its extremely hard to beat dictator in footsies, his kicks are just so damn good and with Scissors Kick (SK) as a constant threat I’m kinda scared to play footsie with him… if i’m not careful and move in and out he can sometimes catch me by surprise with slide… but honestly that’s still the least of my problems…

I’m resorted to carefully move in and out… LP ball/hop to help me move and use electricity to hopefully catch him to score a knockdown then i can make my offense… this is when i’m kinda down in life and i need to catch up to take more risk… otherwise i’ll try to play much more defensively… but that doesn’t help either… because i’ll usually find myself eventually cornered… and him spamming his LK SK at tip…

so here’s my question.

  1. How do you beat SK in general… especially if your opponent only throws it out when you’re close to tip range of SK…
  2. if you’re cornered… and he goes with his cLK -> LK SK frame trap… what are my options?
  3. what do you guys use to punish SK on block… if you block both hits… upball works… but i just get SK and knocked down again… and it sucks…
  4. Any other tidbits I need to know…

also… i do know certain pokes do beat SK… but honestly… some of those options the trade is totally not worth it… I guess right i take off extremely small damage… i timed it wrong or guessed wrong… i get knocked down… .-_-;

LP beast roll will beat his Scissor Kick early. If it whiffs then throw, block and reverse, jump xover, or combo with cr lk> st LP> elec. You might be able to get away with hop over into throw or whatever also.

If your cornered and he tries to crossover then electricity works. Electricity will also stop his stomps.

If hes using standing mk and hk as pokes, FA them.

Punish blocked SK with Standing lp > roll. If he’s getting the spacing down to only 1 hit you, then move around more and throw his spacing off.

Main poke I use is cr lp or st lp where I can hit confirm into ball or at whiff range OS into ball.

Crossover is your best friend in this matchup like in the Guile one. Breaks his charge keeps him from pressuring you and you have the opportunity to damage him from a tick throw or full combo. Don’t try when he has Ultra or Super.

Showing Bison you can punish his SK pressure with LP > roll evens out this matchup a lot.

^ I’d like to add that s.hk stuffs Bison’s s.mk and s.hk clean from the right distance and it’s pretty easy to land if Bison’s getting spammy with it.

Thanks guys for some of these suggestions.

I am still looking for how to counter cLK -> SK when i’m cornered… and he’s not jumping in for cross up but trying to keep me in the corner and slowly chip me to death.

please keep more suggestions going  much appreciated.

always punish blocked punishable scissors with st.lp > elec or U1. or a ball combo into super.

to get around scissor kicks i neutral jump and occasionally focus fish at the tip of either lk or mk scissor range. i dont really try to play footsies much as i find st.hk pretty difficult to get around. i dont put much stock into pokes that beat other pokes

if cornered i block until i can score a definite st.lp and then i walk forward a touch and do another, i might then switch to st.mp and try to force myself out the corner or i might buffer an ex rainbow. It’s pretty hard to get out the corner though, but cake compared to when cammy corners you.

i try to score knockdowns or grabs and after them i ground crossup and cr.mk > st.lp x elec. it hits on stand and crouched. if he ex stomp or ex punch stomp the cr.mk whiffs and you can react to it and walk under the stomp and try and chase down the other controllable punch thing.

his cr.lk is so good people often try to mash it, so i go for cr.tech traps, walking elec occasionally (often gets them to start reversal ex inbetween reps), as usual blanka has to try and counter hit or delayed throw people up close as his offense is pretty crap since he can’t random ball.

actually this is an overall beast hop question. I seem to be able to do nothing after a hop vs people who are solid players. if they are good at teching throws is the answer to change the distance of my hop so i can do a c.LK xx eletric or c.LK s.LP eletric or s.LP eletric? or c.HK?

as for a matchup question. abel is becoming a bit more difficult then i expected. I still think this match is even because i can outpoke him and i have excellent escapes from f+mk mixups. But just wondering if i can get some ideas from better players here.

Thanks guys for the suggestions again, I’ll be sure to try them out and let you know how it turns out.

As for Abel, first thing you gotta do is to find out how well he can punish a blocked ball (without ultra). If he can’t punish it well or don’t know how to you can feel free to abuse it until he’s got his ultra meter up. Also I believe that you can safe ball him when he doesn’t have any ultra available.

Now if he does have his ultra on, or can pretty much punish all your blocked ball, this is when the fight is much tougher… you can pretty much not use ball at all unless you’re trying to position yourself. Upball on hit can also be punished by Ultra. Regular ball on hit can also be punished by Ultra so that leaves at a major disadvantage… sometimes if I’m on MAJOR health lead, I’ll let him do the Ultra so I can have some sort of peace of mind without severely limiting myself… but the problem of course is getting that major health lead in the first place. Sometimes I feel like the fear of his Ultra can turn the game completely in his favor because you’'re limiting yourself too much.

Anyways… imo… in this match up you need to be a bit more aggressive. Electricity works quite well in this match up, his j.MK can sometimes knock you out of it if they are jumping in and trying to catch you near the tip of his feet… but otherwise you should usually win… Another thing to keep in mind is his EX Tornado throw and regular Tornado throw properties are completely different. Regular Tornado throws are invulnerable to ALL throws… while EX tornado throws are invulnerable to hits. Knowing this… you sometimes want to meaty a throw on his wakeup to gamble on the fact that he might not do regular tornado throw and tries to roll instead… forward throw into LP ball -> electricity -> throw/continue electricity is a pretty good mixup on Abel here.

Abel in general his offense is ridiculously strong with his strings and mixup, it can get frustrating… if you have an ex bar… i would suggest you to use it to rainbow out instead of using it as ex upball when you’re facing Abel’s mixup and strings. You kinda need to learn when those string ends and what sort of options you got.

On the other hand, his defense is not as strong and is quite limited, crossing him up and just constant pressure works well from my experience. LP -> electricity pressure works quite well for me as well. His options to anti-air you also involves himself taking some risks, his best anti-air imo are his jumping attacks

In general… if i have the chance… I would want to try to keep an agressive offense on him with jumps and hops as well as certain pokes when i have a clear advantage. But when things are neutral or at a disadvantage I would want to try to back up again and reevaluate the situation and look for another opportunity. When Abel does have the Ultra… they are always lookign to punish ball so LP ball into mixup here is usually a good choice imo…

hope this helps a bit…

Any tips for fighting Sakura? I don’t fight many online, but when I do it is a goddamn ragefest.

You need to give more details on how sakura is beating you. I think this should be a relatively easy match up. As long as you stay out of close range she can’t do much mixup on you which is where she’s crazy good with. Make sure you have an ex bar to rainbow out to escape. Otherwise her only real answer against ball is to interupt it, so if you’re careful and not let her corner you you should be ok. She’s also fairly weak against blankas cross up due to her very horizontal dp.

-LAU

That is pretty much it. I see the same combos from every player and fall for it nearly every time. I hate turtling but I’m just not decent enough to be an aggressive blanka against someone as quick as sakura.

Having a real off-day today too–so frustrating.

Also, I encountered my first B+ Seth today. Good god what an annoying fuck?I felt completely shut down but was able to at least take it to 3. He would keep walking back, spamming sonic booms and countering with his stretchy arms. After the match I was wondering if I could have just jump over the Sonic Booms and hit the electricity as soon as I land to shock his stretched out arms? Also…probably should have gone with U2.

I’ve mentioned this before, but you play according to your opponent and not by the way you prefer. Assuming winning gives you more satisfaction than losing with ‘your preferred style’, you should always play to win… unless you don’t really care about winning but all you care about is if you’re able to play your prefer style and do the combos you want to do and disregard the outcome of the game… then perhaps you should stop reading from this point onwards. (Like for myself… if i play Dan… sometimes my goal is to land a super taunt… into ultra… and i don’t care about winning or losing.)

As you know all characters got different strength and weaknesses… against Dhalsim… i’m not gonna try to play as a complete turtle and sit back and try to lame it out… chances are… i’ll probably get slaughtered by his eventual spacing and yoga fired to death. Obviously I’m not gonna jump in like a madman without thinking twice… but I’ll probably play a bit more aggressive than I usually would compared to if I was playing against Ryu who’s got the best dp in the game.

With that being said… it’s the same with Sakura… she’s got a hard time as long as you play your distance right… you don’t wanna be in her face when she’s pretty much faster than you and got a pretty good FA to beat your pokes in general. You have to play against her weaknesses which is what i mentioned before… if you fail to do so… chances are you’re gonna have a hard time playing against her. You want her to play against your strengths not your weaknesses. So for Blanka, his strengths are strong defense and when he can get a clear advantage…he’s got a pretty good offense. However the problem is when he doesn’t have the advantage… it’s hard for him to make the offense without taking risks…

As for Seth… honestly this character got so much tools and options like Akuma… however his main weakness is his extremely low health. And since any fighting game is still a guessing game… and all moves have certain weakness… as long as you guess right enough times… or you trade hits with him… it’ll always be at your advantage.

His stretchy arms aren’t nearly as good as Dhalsims… sometimes… blocking a bit helps… if you’re keeping pressure on him by slowly moving forward… he can’t exactly chip you to death with sonic boom alone… however on the hand if you make one good timed move and you’re patient enough you’ll eventually get in and it might cost him much more.

-LAU

Obviously,you have never encountered Cobelcog.

Just wanna thank everyone who had given me dictator tips. Played against a decent dictator and did much better. Baiting with FA and punishing SK with jab into ball worked out well for me. I haven’t gotten done jab to electricity punish yet but I’m pretty sure I’ll be doing that soon enough.

On the contrary fought an extremely well Honda today as well and lost to him quite a bit mainly by him slowly out patient me by him chipping me away with blocked hands and I’m getting impatient to try to earn my life back. This is the first time in a long time I faced a Honda that was beating me consistently so I’ll definitely go back and reanalyze my strategy again

anyways thanks again for the help

-LAU

This is pretty damn accurate for that match I had. I had about 20% of my health left and managed to connect an upball as he was spamming his damn j.FP stretchy arms with nearly a full life bar. Once I got that knockdown I managed to tear him apart to about 20% until he was able to teleport out.

Seth is my worse matchup. Mainly, I’m impatient with zoners. I have gotten better against Dhalsim at least.

seriously with both Seth and Dhalsim… i feel like most of the time the match is decided by if you can manage to find that one or two opportunity to get in and do damage… if your attempt fails… you fail

I watched a video,a few months ago.Mizoteru vs a Dhalsim player, the sim player completely shut Mizoteru out.Its pretty hard to watch,Mizoteru’s Blanka has no chance.I would post a link to the vid,but i cant remember where i even watched it (Probabily youtube)
On the flipside, i recall watching a video (on youtube) of a blanka player utterly destroying a cornered Dhalsim (It was from sf4 vanilla).
I think the seth match is harder personally.

I tend to struggle more against other charge characters. My results against Balrog, and Bison players are disgusting.

I don’t get to play enough good enough players like I did with championship mode. I’ve found myself struggling against matchups I don’t get to see very often. I thought vanilla was bad with people playing mainly Sagat, Ryu, Akuma, and Balrog. SSF4 seems mostly Ryu, Ryu, and Ryu.
