The Complete Alex Thread

For real? I never really tried it, I tend to rely on sHP and that stuff’s regular headbutt but not the EX version. I’ll check this out. Thanks man.

The funny thing is my timing has never truly adjusted to GGPO, I still parry like it’s offline, and that tends to get me killed more. I’m really just playing GGPO to learn matchups until 3SO comes out and hopefully the tourney scene will be revived.

All of Urien’s Headbutts can get thrown out of with a very early b.HP, including EX. It’s also a very good anti-parry, as mentioned. I’m not sure about Kneedrops, but most Uriens won’t even think about that as an option.

Its fun to stuff other things with an early headbutt. There’s been a couple of times where my opponent does wakeup Ken’s SA3/chun sa2 only to get grabbed right out of their super.

Oh yeah, bHP also beats Ken’s SA3 on wakeup. I’ve made people rage with that.

Standing jab beats uriens whiffed headbutt I think.

^ Nope, tried that. Free grab for Urien, at least online.

Okay, I tried bHP on Urien, and it’s pretty decent but I still got destroyed just by whiffed headbutt into grab. I’ve resigned myself to believing that shit is completely broken online. He can actually launch you, then do crLP, then do a Headbutt and there is nothing you can do about it. If you block he grabs, there is no move to counter it.

Do you mean you’re having a hard time because he’s mixing it up between whiff headbutt into throw and whiff headbutt into low jab? Low parry + throw option select.

But yeah. Either you’ll develop the speed to react better, or online 3S really is as bad as you say (I wouldn’t know). If you can react to the whiff in time, another option is short stomp.

This always bugged the fuck out of me. Has anyone been able to do his target combos?

Target Combos
D LK -> D MK
D LK -> D HK

That is taken directly from the SRK Wiki. And only once have I ever gotten dLK > dMK. Never had dLK > dHK ever.

Short into sweep doesn’t combo but can catch people as a frame trap.

The trick to LK>MK is that the timing varies. It isn’t like other target combos that have a set rhythm–instead think of it as cancel timing. If the short hits early, press forward early and if it hits late press forward late.

Short into Forward is really important to Alex so be sure to practice it.

Why is it important when cr.forward doesnt combo into anything?Is it just to use it as a blockstring?

Sorry I’m still an Alex scrub.

It hits twice. Low.

Everyone parries high vs Alex because thats where his damage comes from. This chain gives him more options.

Normally don’t play GGPO but my friend gave me a few rounds on it. I fought another Alex and in the match bHP then EX Elbow Slash connected. Is this doable in arcades, or is this just online nonsense? This perplexes me.

IIRC its possible to connect both, but for it to combo, impossible.

There’s no way to combo off of bHP. What probably happened is that sometimes EX Elbow is so fast online that the other guy can’t block it. Same applies to Dudley’s EX Machine Gun Blow.

By the way. I got the LK>Mk to work (mostly) by hitting LK then double tapping MK, and it comes out most of the time. I’m going to try to use it more. I think the LK>HK string is complete garbage because you’re left so open by doing that, and if the other guy can parry you’re fucked.

Ahh it’s not a total loss if you ask me. I’ve rarely seen cr.HK itself get punished much, especially from max range, and not too many people are going to expect cr.LK->cr.HK anyway. If anything it’s good as an occasional mixup against characters who can’t reverse it blocked or try to jump.

The problem is when you’re dealing with someone who knows that Alex can do LP Power Bomb after doing crLK/crMK. So, they tend to do neutral jumps to punish the intended Power Bomb. So to me doing a Sweep is way worse then doing a Power Bomb because the Sweep is so slow. If they neutral jump and you do LP Power Bomb, they don’t have a huge a window to punish you as much as a Sweep. Know what I mean? Plus they could always mash out an SRK or Super after you do the crLK, or if you’re fighting someone like Ken and you do that, Ken of course can punish that Sweep with SA3.

I don’t think it’s worth it.

So what are the uses for the ‘big boot’ aka st.roundhouse?

For LULZ. Seriously.

It’s okay for mixup, and it will beat some moves like Urien’s Elbow (even EX version) or Urien’s Headbutt. Would never recommend it on wakeup, too easily parried, SRK and Super beats it clean. Etc. But Alex has way better moves for mixup. It’s something that you shouldn’t just throw out there unless you have a big life lead, the other guy doesn’t have super loaded, or you’re infused with Yomi magic.

Oh, and when you beat the guy, it’s considered appropriate to do the Boot.

Edit: Is it possible to kara-grab that stHK? I know you can kara something with it.
