I guess as soon as Cajun Chess in my local area starts up again, I can attend their tournaments after this virus goes away. I’m willing to bet that the competition is far more accessible locally than what it use to be. That’s a good thing. Until then, I’ll practice and get better.

Bought one similar to the one below from a bazaar in 2003 in Afghanistan and gave it away that same year. Cost me like $40 but was probably worth more than that. Probably hundreds of dollars or more like rare Magic cards

i could see myself collecting chess sets but never playing on those. i’d find it too distracting. i have a standard green/white tournament board that rolls up for easy storage - something like this but in green and white
Well 2020 came and went. bulldancer still crushes me in correspondence chess and my rating is still stangant at mid-upper 1600 range. jion wansu your bullet rating is INSANE. my blitz rating improved a little bit but then i got drunk and lost a bunch of games and never recovered, if i can end the year at 1400 i’ll be happy. my tactics rating jumped up to 2100 but it has not translated to improved daily chess rating at all, although it has helped blitz a bit when i see some sick cccccombo.
overall i do feel like i got better at chess this year but not with respect to slower time controls. i think i need to study openings at this point. i’ve been skeptical with regards to openings before, but i find myself ending up in bad positions againnst players who know what they’re doing, like bulldancer, so i need to learn enough opening theory.
my current openings are d4 ONLY as white. i typically always do d4, c4, nc6, e3 as my setup, regardless of how they respond.
And then if i’m black, i do caro khan against e4 because fuck the sicilian and memorizing ten million sharp variations that will lose you the game if you misremember, and then against white d4 i do nf6.
i almost never play against any douchebags that do weird openings like reti or english. however if they do do something douchey weird like the english, i try to transition it into a queens gambit declined ASAP
