While I also liked HoD myself, other acquaintances of mine citied their main problem with HoD was Juste’s character. While I felt that was a valid point, it still didn’t deter me from enjoying the game that much.
Interestingly enough, these same people had problems with MegaMan Zero’s design since they were loyal fans to the original.
What was wrong with his character? He was a dude with a whip who cast magic and kicked ass. What more do you need in a Cv game? It’s not like these games have huge, break out character roles and developments.
Dunno, and I liked how they had a boss every 10 minutes. Some of them had some really great designs. Many of my favorite boss designs from the series came from that game, especially the new minotaur design that wasn’t a copy&paste from Rondo.
Though they may have “fixed” the palette in the later games, they didn’t fix the fact that most of them were bad. Or the black outlines on the sprites in the DS games and how they totally clashed with the copy&pasted sprites from Rondo and SotN.
I really haven’t been happy with a Cv since HoD (the real one, not this Despair garbage) and kind of wish the series would just die for a decade.
My acquaintances reasoning was that it seemed saving Lydia was his only goal while Dracula only happens to be in the way. Like I said, I still liked HoD myself and remember my excitement when I learned I was going to play a Belmont on the GBA.
I was fortunate enough to try my friend’s collection of Castlevania games for GBA first but when I finally decided to get HoD the double pack came out with Aria of Sorrow. The first thought in my mind then was “SOLD!”
Except that Dracula didn’t even exist fully in that game. He was destroyed by Simon prior. That’s why Juste wasn’t concerned about Dracula, he was concerned about Liddy and Maxim, his two friends. Maxim happened to be prossessed by Dracula’s wraith, and the final form of Dracula wasn’t even a resurrected body. It was simply after Maxim was defeated, it released Dracula’s wraith which you fought, and then the 5 body parts (Heart, eye, rib, fang, and ring) Juste collected (a huge throwback to his Grandfather Simon’s quest) come together and you fight that. Up until that point, there really wasn’t a Dracula, he wasn’t alive again so Juste was only concerned about his friends.
Liddy was kidnapped and Maxim, who at first seemed in good health, was a trained fighter who was capable of surviving on his own. He wasn’t out to save the world from Dracula in that game.
Thank you for the calrification. I’ll admit it’s been a while even for me since I’ve last played HoD on my Double Pack. Now I think about it, I’m bummed out since I don’t have anything that plays GBA games anymore (I’ve moved onto a DSi).
I’ll admit though Moonchilde, you seem to know your Castlevania as well as solid as I know Gen 1 Pokemon (and boy did I know Gen 1 Pokemon).
Heh, I used to be a really big fan of the series. I have tons of game (legit, not bootleg) posters, many (legit, not bootleg) of the soundtracks, sealed copies of the GBA and DS games, a few Japanese special edition imports, and at least a copy of every game in the series minus Legends and Belmont’s Revenge. It wasn’t until the DS games came out that I started to dislike the series, the misdirection of the series even though it was united under one producer, and Lords of Shadow. I even picked up the special edition of Lords of Shadow, but try as I might, I just don’t like the game. It looks amazing, has decent story so far and the voice acting is incredible, but it just plays like ass. I can’t stand it. I still haven’t finished it because it’s a frustrating piece of shit to play. Oh, and the last 2 chapters of the game are DLC, $10 each and still haven’t come down in price. Fuck it.
The only other game series where I collect things outside of the games themselves are the Team ICO ones. Sadly, I missed out on a lot of stuff to be had because I couldn’t afford to buy a bunch of it.
Whoa, I didn’t hear anything about DLC chapters like that or anything like that to begin with in games. Now I’m kind of glad I decided to skip out on it or maybe wait until I get around to renting it.
I’ll admit too that it wasn’t until OoE on DS that I was comfortable with the art style on the DS Castlevania games. Not that that was a big part of the gameplay but still I loved the detailed and dark illustrations of Soma and the rest of the cast on Aria of Sorrow and hoped that would’ve carried over.
I’ve still yet to come around to get the Team ICO games myself because of money. I was set on getting it since I knew I wouldn’t have to hunt down PS2 copies of the games (I spent a pretty penny to get ICO and ZOE: 2nd Runner on PS2 once). I’ve come to the decision that if money was ok, ICO and SoTC would be only PS2 HD collection game I’d get since all the others did not have as much sentimental value to me as ICO and SoTC.
Castlevania art on my personal favorite arcade stick made by NiteWalker in 2006. Who needs Ryu on a stick when you get Alucard (minus part of his face…) Dracula, Richter, and Maria.
Most were bad? I have to disagree there. Considering the fact that I didn’t play Rondo or SotN.
I constantly spent time just admiring the monster sprites and the environments, aside from a few instances that I can’t remember right now they worked well together.
I understand how somebody who has played all the old games would be disappointed in recycled sprites though.
The best part about all three GBA games was that none of the sprites were recycled from Rondo.
Harmoy of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow, while having (mostly) underwhelming music (there were good tracks in both; just the OSTs as a whole were bleh), also tried for musical identities for themselves (as opposed to spamming tons of remixes) and it worked very nicely.
Though I guess the series never really had a problem with that. Just some more recent entries like HoDespair and Adventure Rebirth (which ironically didn’t remix a single track from the game it was a remake of).
Broke down and located my old gamecube and gameboy player adapter.
Ordered the double pack and cotm because I never finished them.
God I wish they made an adapter like that for the Wii/ds
