The Castlevania Thread

Or cutscenes that are just loony/don’t make any sense/explain things we don’t need to know.

YES!!! CotM doesn’t get enough praise for being the best Castleroid. Iga still can’t come close to the bosses in that game. Twin Zombie Dragons? Giant Goat’s Head in the gallows? Classic classic stuff. All these boss fights these days are small one/two room affairs. I miss fighting in giant rooms like in SotN and CotM.

Also for you cats who like to go outside did you play Order of Eclesia on the DS? It was both a bit challenging and delievered on outside levels plus a castle (though again, when things are split between indoors and outdoors it always feels 50/50. I wish we could get a 50/100 ratio or something).

“And now…Dracula is once again reborn in…Castlevania…”

“CASTLEVANIA?!”

 Exactly. Watch…every time you kill a boss, we get some 20-minute cutscene explaining their life story.

Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse was the first video game I’ve ever played, and I’m still hooked on Castlevania to this day. I’m 23 years old now, and it’s still my all time favorite series. Every time I play Super Castlevania IV, I get goosebumps. That game’s soundtrack is so freakishly amazing.

Lords of Shadow better live up to everything that Castlevania is. WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT TO HAVE A CURSE BITCH
I’ve been thinking about something, though. Hideo Kojima’s name is on Lords of Shadow now, and I don’t think he’ll let his name be put on just any game, or a bad game at that. I’m remaining hopeful.

in the past few days ive decided to replay CV1, 4 and DXC.
and ive gotta say… nothing tormented me more than 4… many deaths did i need against slogra? ughh and how many times did i get spikes in my head…
how did i ever play this when i was younger? so savage
i doubt the new game will have a difficulty, unless they follow demons souls tracks and just be unrelentless

and there better be spikes!

Had the urge to dust off my old copy of SOTN and fly through that inbetween studies, good idea since I never went through ALL of both castles. Beat the Lesser Demon in the library once I got the double jump (before I went to Clock Tower and cave) and that’s making things a lot easier. It’s a breeze so far, but I still remember what a pain in the butt that mass of dead bodies boss was.

The only thing that torments me about 4 is how damn slow the game moves. I know it is a very popular game but it ranks as one of the lowest for me among the traditional castlevania games.

But it’s the same speed as the other old school CV games, but with more control over the character. So I guess you didn’t like the older ones either, then?

maybe by traditional he means anything from PS1 and under?

I play the old Castlevanias very often and the game just moves slow and is too long when compared to the two best games in the series, XWSiofQAWPE"]Castlevania 1 and (because of the blast processing, obviously), but nothing compared to Adventure 1… that game is just yucky. I’d love to try the Wii remake sometime though.

i dunno man, it wasnt that bad
especially compared to the NES
cv4 to me is still the greatest, because very little can beat 8-way whipping and cool level design

Okay, dead bodies boss was easier this time since I knew what to do. Found out about some hidden rooms I didn’t know about so I got 99.7% on the first castle, did I still miss something? Do I need to find some extra items in walls or something? Anyway, tried second castle and I forgot how frustrating that clock tower is. Just going to earn enough cash to get dat duplicator. Up to 216000 or so right now.

I do love my Castlevania any way I can get it, but I do prefer the older action-style games to the Metroivanias.

Everybody thinks I’m crazy for saying this, but my favourite CV is definitely Bloodlines for the Genesis. Something about that game hits all the right notes. The music, backgrounds, the enemies, everything feels just right. My only complaint would be that it’s too easy, even on expert mode. That’s not to say that I think Bloodlines is the* best* CV, just my favourite.

CVIII and IV are awesome to say the least, as is Rondo of Blood.

Of all the Metroidvanias tho, the only ones I’ve played are SOTN, COTM, HOD, and POR. I really enjoyed POR because of its style, level design, and its obvious relation to Bloodlines. Harmony of Dissonance was hot garbage, very boring and disappointing.

Other than the ones I played, what are the best or most exciting Metroidvanias?

I just hate how the Metroidvanias (Igas at least) tend to be poor mans Super Metroid rip offs. Like Iga’s made how many attempts at it and none of them manage to be better then Super Metroid? Like their not even close. Only one to come close is circle of the moon a Metroidvania not made by Igarashi. It’s kind of annoying and sours the experience for me. I am interested in trying out Esclasia or whatever it was called. I heard it was hard, a bit level based (Like areas where more like levels or something) ad I just got a DS and want something to play.

Personally, I think SotN trumps SM in pretty much every way. Graphics, music, atmosphere, boss fights, enemy design, level design, weapons, etc. Hell, he even has a cooler walking animation!

In terms of Metroidvanias, for me it goes: SotN >> DoS > AoS > CotM > PoR > OoE >> Harmony of Disshitsucks

wow DeathReaper47, that would be my exact ranking as well. And lmao @ Harmony of Disshitsucks. So true.

LOL I bought that in the AoS/HoD two-pack collection thing. http://www.amazon.ca/Castlevania-Double-Harmony-Dissonance-Sorrow/dp/B000CC196K

I played AoS first, was blown away by its greatness. I thought HoD would match up to it somewhat. Boy was I wrong. Craptastic magic system, ugly graphics and colors, terrible music, messy castle layout, lackluster boss fights, and mediocre weapons were the name of the game, and I stop playing it right before the final area of the game. Just soooo bad.

I don’t think he’s trying to outdo the Metroid series; the metroidvania games are good in their own way.

Funny, Harmony of D. was the very first Castlevania game I played and beat, and it’s one of my fav.

I’m glad other people here see HoD for what it is. I can’t believe people actually like that game, with its very blatant flaws. The boss fights were so passive, and they all took place in the same small rectangular room…even for Legion. They completely focused on making the game look pretty. The only thing they got right in that game was making the game bright enough to see everything.
