The Castlevania Thread

Ah, see, I thought you fought Wind. I knew that he tested you to a degree, but that was to fight a Richter illusion or something from what a wiki says, which is funny because I completely forgot you could fight his illusion. Though I did not play through the entire game I do recall seeing his sprite and other people posting the edits made to it to create other Belmonts from the series. It’s still in that “this good guy character must test you before you fight the last boss” thing. You know what I mean? If the rivalry isn’t from possession, it’s a test your might thing. So while he didn’t directly test you himself, he still tested you another way. That, and it’s easier, lazier, and I guess cheaper to copy and paste the Rondo Richter sprite (and then edit that same sprite for that power of the bloodline trash) and have you fight that instead.

Sad thing is Brauner was probably one of the more interesting villains the Iga games had, he just happened to be in one of the worst games in the series :frowning: The game’s story would have probably ended up perfectly fine with him as the sole (and tragic) villain with no need to even bring up Dracula and avoid yet another pre-mature resurrection.

Whoever said LoS is not a CV game… Well it says Castlevania on the front and I think that is pretty convincing enough. It’s not as if namco could slap that name on one of their games and expect to get away with it. Just like DmC and even that game was still decent.

Also, no intention of creating any more heat but I do love both series even if the 2D ones get repetetive. I just love the sprites as a general factor. Plus I never payed for one, so I cannot complain.

I think the major difference between DMC and DmC and Castlevania and LoS is that DMC was pretty focused. It had a style, characters were somewhat developed to the point you knew exactly who they were, and there was only 4 games in the series. There is also only about 11 years or so that it has to its name. Even DMC2 was pretty true to the original game with the exception of Dante being silent instead of a wise-ass and lackluster level design. The action was still there. No one wanted that reboot and frankly it was unwarranted and unasked for.

Castlevania on the other hand was never really focused, spanned over 3 decades, and was all over the place as far as timeline is concerned. Characters were never truly fleshed out and Simon and Trevor are pretty interchangeable between their games. It had been rebooted a few times (MSX to NES, x68k remake of Cv1, Super Cv, Haunted Castle) and had enough retcons and patching that the series needed a true reboot to start fresh. At the very least, Castlevania was never defined as a particular type of game, there are plenty of takes on the game so yet another doesn’t kill it. It’s the lack of direction that calls for a reboot more so than most other game series out there. I can’t think of many that have had the amount of retcons and such as it does.

The way Wind (Eric Lecarde) tested you had nothing to do with rivalry but everything to do with his family duty. Their job is to unlock the full power of Vampire Killer for the Morris clan by having them fight the memory of the whip. Apparently Richter was the last Belmont to wield the whip before being handed to the Morris clan.

As for other Belmont sprites, those were actually in the game. Johnathan and Charlotte ultimate team attack involved summoning 5 Belmonts (presumably the memories of the whip) to kick some ass.

Internet tough guy huh? How’s that workin out for you? Gettin all the respect?

Portrait of Ruin had fun gameplay and I enjoyed playing it. Only issue I really had with the game was the shitty animu artstyle+unbearable characters.

Dawn of Sorrow had the same problem, especially coming off of the really moody and unique artstyle of Aria of Sorrow. Then they made Order of E, which was amazing, and was a high point in the Metroidvania style of CV’s imo. One of my favorites.

I thought the downloadable PSN/Live title sucked. You like to explore? Fuck it, you’re in a box with a time limit with characters that have maybe 1/4th of their move list if you’re lucky. :shake:

Not about respect. About telling a fool to shut the fuck up.

You know very little about these subjects you speak so long-windedly about, including, but not limited to, Castlevania games (new or old, 3D or 2D), innovation in gaming, the importance of innovation in gaming (spoiler alert: it’s nowhere near as high as you think, and not present in half the things you think it is), gaming in general, anything.

The problem is it still falls into “fight this good guy character” though. We’ve already fought Richter , Trevor, and Julius (had to look his name up I could not remember it for the life of me) in the games prior so why pull out the “hey fight a Belmont yet again!” thing? Couldn’t they have thought of something else?

I know the Belmont sprites were in the game, my point was they were lazy and terrible Richter sprite edits. People had ripped them from the ROM and that was how I knew Richter was in the game in some form.

Unlike the other “fight the good guy” scenarios from other Castlevanias the boss fight with Richter is optional. You can chose not to fight him and go straight to Dracula.

I’m about 10 hours into los2 and while there are issues with the camera and excessive climbing everywhere, and a zoning mechanic that gets old fast.

The game it’s fantastic and music reallywell done it’s pacing is done well, the combat engine seems more enjoyable the los1 and overall I’m really enjoying the game.

Thanks for posting that. I’m not looking for LoS2 to change my life. I just want a CV game that is enjoyable enough and will close out the rebooted story.

Mirror of Fate will be get a PC port later this month

Great, I’ve been waiting for that for a long time. 60 fps.

Taken from the VG general thread. IGA leaves Konami

This leaves the series in an interesting place. Will MercurySteam hang on to the series or get another producer for future games?

Welp, fuck Castlevania now, here’s hoping Iga pulls some Mighty 09 type shit and starts making the good shit again in a “This isn’t Castlevania at all honest (It really is Castlevania)” way.

It’s a shame it had to happen this way with the series itself being taken over by God of War wanabees but if it means we’ll get the good shit back under a different name I suppose its for the best.

Abandoning thread.

Hmm that does leave it in an interesting state, i’d assume a new dev team gets a chance at the franchise as MS stated they wanted to move on from the series after this.
I hope this remains the case and we get a new set of hands involved. I’d really like to see Crystal Dynamics get involved with a new entry especially if they can get the old Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver team involved.

Thank god Iga is gone. All he did was copy and paste more than Capcom did for Marvel 2

Sad. I’d take another CV made by Iga over MercuryS any day.

Console release was 60 FPS I’m pretty sure.

Iga transformed Castlevania from super solid platforming to empty hallways and XP bars in a place that has no business having XP bars.

So he won’t be missed by me.

Castlevania is still fucked…
