The Cartoons and Animation Thread

Is it just me, or does it seem like a lot of animated shows these days are just trying to imitate the style of Rick and Morty?

The designs somewhat started 10 years ago with Adventure time:

Flat bodies with little to no depth? check
noodle arms? check
plain facial structures which makes it easy to animate? check!

these shows tend to put (or try) to make the humor/writing carry the show vs the animation. Sometimes this works, most often it doesn’t. I’m fine with stylized designs but once a show becomes popular, there’s always going to be peeps who try to emulate it. Also many animators/creators tend to come in waves as usually they work together on previous projects. Look into show creators/who they worked with and the waves tend to come every 10 years.

I think it started with FamilyGuy, all these new adult shows look like Family guy, even Rick & Morty.

at the time I ignored it as the show had decent comedy…now I look at it as what the show has become, lazy and overdone.

McFarlane has always been a better writer than animator. Especially back in Johnny Bravo. The episodes he wrote were ridiculously funny and the best ones in the series.

I’m fine with it for his shows, it’s his style and it fits his shows ( the lazy thing is another issue that comes with a show running too long imo) my problem is everyone else adopted it and bow their show has no real identity.

It’s kind of why I liked Gumball so much once my Manager got me to watch it because the writings on point and it’s really funny but also because it has a really unique style and look to it. I can pick Gumball out a crowed.

All these other adult cartoons not named Archer…id be hard pressed to tell them apart if I didn’t know better.

Edit: Seth’s not really an animator. He’s a writer who had to become an animator to because it was the only way to get his project off the ground. He did the first hand full of family guy episodes by himself in his kitchen at home. It’s very similar to how the South Park guys made their show out construction paper because they weren’t animators and they didn’t have an animation team (yet) so they did what they could and tried their best. Once it took off they couldn’t change the look it was iconic to the show now. Same for Seth in many ways.

Dedication. But it also shows in his work that he’s not really an animator.

Yes, the guy (hate or like him) is talented. He can write, act and sing. Art wise has an idea that works but best left to stick to his bread and butter. Out of his shows, American Dad is his best and actually still funny.

Good design means you can make a silhouette of the character and people could recognize the character. I could recognize (from adult cartoons) a Stand Smith but Peter griffin would be slightly harder. I suppose it’s less of me being annoyed at the art and more so that Fox (or Disney now? I need to look) won’t let the series die. Seth himself doesn’t even do anything for the show anymore, it’s on autopilot.

I look at my old art and realize I’m (despite getting an animation degree) aren’t a really great artist, maybe I was meant to write/tell a story.

I will never stop praising Gumball. It really was the best show of the past decade. better than Adventure Time, better than Gravity Falls, Steven Universe. It knew what it was and had it all. Writing, humor, fun, unique style and even had a few heartwarming moments.

I don’t think so. I think it’s just the trend of more simplicity in design. Alot of these animation kids on TV tend to come from similar generations. So alot of times it can be just the trend going on as they grew up and fleshed their ideas and got them finally on TV. Also doesn’t help the creators of the show seem to be having 20 different shows coming out now.

I didn’t even know he was a part of that show.

I think it’s just an excuse for a lower animation budget.

I should post more bad/weird cartoon movies…these are hilarious! The designs are the best part of this one. I’m not big on fantasy like this but it was at least interesting. Hilarious Lucas was tied to this.

Andy is playing old school Saturday morning cartoons:

The cast is looking quite nice…

That cast is actually super solid. Rogen as Allen the Alien makes perfect sense.

So does Walton Goggins as Stedman

Gillian Jacobs as Eve is an interesting choice.

More Walking Dead alums to Invincible…

Honestly I see alot of them as voices and it makes so much sense. Negan as his dad would be perfect :joy:

Really wished they had widened the net on casting
