What is SBO rules anyway, pardon my lack of knowledge?
Is that the no same character rule? I completely agree about this.
I still say Double Elimination would make this faster with Iron Man rule in effect.
Since this is a Team Tournament, seeding by region is not possible.
It could get messy with the mixtures of the players region per team.
Thanks for the discussion guys, i’m sure we can finalize the rules by this week.
Wouldn’t that mean that if I know a Sauga team is strong, I can just say i’m from Sauga to not face them off the bat. So i’d say no on this one. To me Region seeding does not sound probable with team tourny.
I personally think that FT5 is a better format because it truely tests how well a team can perform OVERALL. ** Remember that teams should only be as strong as their weakest player. **
With the two simple FT5 rules of:
everyone plays at least once and
but no more than 3 times
The importance of team balance comes into play. I’ll use an example of team consisting of Alex Valle + 2 scrubs (let’s just say their names are i dunno … kymah + teddy)
Under FT5, Valle can put his team up 3-0 quickly. Then he will have to sit (rule #2) and either kymah or teddy will have to play. But since they are scrubs, they can’t even buy a win and lose all of their games. The team goes down 5-3.
With Iron Man rules, Alex Valle puts on his uniform and becomes the bus driver - taking everybody to school. He’ll rip through teams without the 2 scrubs ever having to play.
Overall Alex Valle is definately the best PLAYER but may not have the best TEAM in this case and thus should not be successful in a team tournament.
If we had 10 teams of 3, we could run (based on the same maths in my earlier post)…
… a FT5 in about 6-7 hours on 3 stations
… or a SBO / Iron Man style in about 4-5 hours on 3 stations
With that being said, the things that definately need to remain the same are:
a) the pot split needs to remain at 70/20/10. Entry fee should be kept at $5 per person or $15 per 3 person team.
b) we should be allowed to choose our teams freely
c) no duplicate characters on the same team
d) order of the team to be decided before the match. we can use a judge or 3rd party to enforce a “blind select” of the team order if necessary. (more applicable towards iron man / SBO style)
e) for FT5, i’m not too sure how this would work … does the winning player have to play again and the losing team can select someone new to play? or both teams can select new players after each match?
D) What we do in Tekken and SC tournaments is each team writes down on a piece of paper who goes first and what character. That way, nobody can counter pick.
e) The winning player can stay if he wants or not, but he is literally only allowed to play 3 times max. So he can waste his turns beating on scrubs or save his spot to be used against a Balrog player. LOL
UGH… FT5 takes too damned long. 6 - 7 hours is under ideal conditions. That’s if everyone is around, no one asked to go for dinner break, no one is in the bathroom, the directors are 100% on the ball and/or not playing matches themselves (inevitably there’s a slowdown). Realistically you’re probably looking at 7 - 8 hours if not 8 - 9. If we’re starting at 2:30pm - 3:00pm we’ll be there until 10:00pm under the most ideal of conditions as opposed to say 7:00pm - 8:00pm with Iron Man rules.
Justin; on multiple occasions you’ve voiced your discontent with burning your entire Saturday at tournaments. I’m in the same boat in that I’d prefer to still have my night to enjoy. I think we should run SBO ruleset and see how long it realistically takes. If the shorter format turns out even longer than the math says, you know you can absolutely rule out FT5 due to time. If it turns out the same if not shorter then it provides the latitude for FT5 at a later date.
In a single game format, does everyone really think that a Jay Wang or Gerjay will win EVERY game? Because I don’t. I don’t like how everyone is crying about how one person can carry a team, when its single game and anything can happen.
Why don’t we suggest to the NBA that no player can score more than 20 points? Once they score 20 points they have to sit down and let other people play. I mean it’s the only way to show whos got the best “team”. amirite?
I forgot about the team split. 70/20/10 should work.
FT5 is best TEAM WISE. We can try 4-5 screens, but people would need to come through with TVs. There are 3 TVs already at the Venue and mines is 4. Trust more screens will speed things up hella fast. We’ll also do 2 TVs Losers 1 TV Winners, so there is no amazing Gap between matches.
Iron Man is good for speed. Maybe writing down the order and characters before will slightly? balance things out.
And yea I guess Teams can be freely chosen.
But Vints and OOF have all demonstrated how a 5v5 becomes a 5v1.
I like Iron Man. Either way I think people lose track of what spreading out top players means. If you are a middle tier player, would you rather a) Lose to Team Empire knowing full well that the best 3 players are contained in one team b) Lose to Team Empire A then Team Empire C, knowing that they have the best 3 players spread into 3 teams to take ALL the tournament money.
To me, it doesn’t make sense to spread out top players. If anything it gives a bigger pool of teams people don’t want to go up against, compared to maybe having 1-2 powerhouse teams and everybody else being on equal level. That’s just how I see it though. . .
PS - I completely agree with Teddy. The odds of me or Jay Wang completely carrying a team in Iron Man format are extremely unlikely. But I still think punishing players for placing high is a bad idea. There’s a fine line between keeping a tournament ‘fun’ and ‘competitive’ and destroying the competition completely. :S
I think that if we can get 48 ppl, then we can split the pots to top 3 or maybe even top 4. Having ranked players on one team shouldn’t be a problem. Even though it almost guarantees the first 2 or 3 spots, it should be more about abusing character weaknesses/lack of character experience. Strategy is key I guess.
Having the same character more than once on a team is ridiculously gay…
Iron man style would feed into our issue with ranked players all on one team. FT5 i’m assuming is best 2/3 within a team match. That would at least give some hope for other teams… debatable.
With all that being said… anybody willing to have me on their team?
Bad idea. It’s better to work with what you’re sure you have than what you might have. Murphy’s Law son.
I don’t see the point from this statement. Maybe it would be best to reexamine what you are trying to do with a team tournament vs a single player tournament.
