The Boxing Thread

What is a good rate when it comes to boxing gyms? This one in Philly charges $55 an hour and that sounds pretty damn pricey to me.

That seems like a lot. The one I train at is $35/month and I get to use their equipment, etc. There is another one in the city that is $75/month, but it doubles up as a fitness club and stuff. It all depends on what you want. Because where I train is grimy, very dark and dank, and only wants you to work. I believe I posted some pics of where I train a few pages back.

Iā€™m glad Bradley finally got a win nobody can whine about. I like him a lot as a fighter, and itā€™s a shame that his two biggest wins have been tainted by things largely outside of his control. I mean, I guess itā€™s his fault that he leads with his head, but itā€™s not his fault that cut ended the fight, and itā€™s certainly not his fault the judges didnā€™t agree with the majority of the crowd on his fight with Pacquiao. Hopefully a clean win against a big name will help him get the respect I think he deserves.

Dj, what style of karate do/did you study? Iā€™ve trained in kickboxing and ā€œregularā€ boxing, but Iā€™m looking to branch out a little. Thereā€™s an Enshin school in my area with a very good repuation, so Iā€™ve been thinking about trying that out. Since you mentioned studying karate, I figured Iā€™d ask, on the off chance you studied Enshin (or another style in the Kyokushin family), if you felt it complimented or conflicted with the stuff you were learning at your boxing gym.

Honestly I feel that I enjoy training boxing more than karate. It may be because Iā€™m a judoka at heart or the fact that Iā€™m a white belt in karate. But I noticed that a lot of the higher ranks never want to spar because they feel Iā€™m too aggressive. I k ow how to spar and I donā€™t know how to feel about very high ranks not wanting to work with me even though Iā€™m a white belt. If anything I feel I gained more with my boxing training. Mainly because I do the same workouts as the pros in our gym. I have noticed that I donā€™t go to karate as much and the last time I went I was not feeling it at all. Iā€™m tired of running through the same forms that I have down and Iā€™m tired of being told that punching like a boxer is not proper punching even though itā€™s obvious that I could hang with the higher ranks in the class. I guess for me base my progress on how hard my practices are and in karate I barely break a sweat. Boxing I can barely move.

My gym is 47 a month i did 3 months for 120.

Got to hit the mitts friday that was amazing

lol lennox doesnā€™t want any part of those klitschko boys. vitali giving him dat work is what sent his ass into retirement in the first place. i remember watching that fight (cheering for lewis) and being ecstatic when the doctor stopped it because lennox was definitely catching an asswhooping.

Thatā€™s the general experience Iā€™ve heard from people who crossed over from boxing to shotokan and karate-without-adjectives, but Iā€™ve heard most of the kyokushin family places a lot of emphasis on sparring. The videos Iā€™ve seen still look less aggressive than the sparring Iā€™m used to, but I donā€™t know if theyā€™re particularly representative, or if thatā€™s even a fair way to judge since my kickboxing school was practically psychotic when it came to sparring.

Well I found that I prefer certain aspects of boxing over Karate. I feel that boxing is more efficient with punches, etc. When I was sparring in Karate I was using my footwork, jabs, etc. I was told that I wasnā€™t sparring right. But I think they just didnā€™t know how to cope and what not. Tradition Karate has more emphasis on katas and stuff, and honestly for me that was the most boring part, lol. I understand why it is necessary, but I just hated running through the katas practice after practice. I wanted more variety. Kyokushin is a bit different in how itā€™s a lot more fierce and big on sparring. I say check out some classes and go from there. Honestly I kind of prefer boxing over Karate, but that is just me.

Check out Judd Reid and how he had to prepare for his 5th degree black belt test.

Back to boxing though. If anyone is up, there is the Mosley/Midune fight coming on around 8am (it will be in Australia).

Last day of week 3. Did a lvl 2 class after lvl1. Learned basic blocking and slipping. Other coach told me to stop punching with my weight and more with my fist.

-more stamina increase, except for the jumping parts. Split jumps be killing my shins
-slight ab definition, still round tummy though
-arms feeling lighter when throwing punches
-still bad at jump rope

Interesting. My coach told me to use my weight behind my punches, but instead of pushing, imagine punching through something. I couldnā€™t imagine a punch that is just arms and fist be as effective compared to one that you throw with your weight behind it. So are they more so teaching you the mechanics behind the punches or what?

Yeah he said im basically ONLY punching with my weight and not my fist at all

probabbbly not watching this

First shot was a rabbit, the last looked like a very nasty rabbit, you can see him hook it in.

Reads like a bunch of bullshit tbh. Ref couldnt have stopped that from happening. Its boxing, over 500 boxers have died in the ring and many will continue to do so.

QQ moar :coffee:

RIP Franky Leal.

Just got back from boxing. I know this may sound weird, but I can see certain parallels from our gym and Kamogawa gym in HnI. For example I am the new guy, but I work really hard with all the vets, and there are only like 4 or 5 other guys who go regularly. We have two coaches, and its funny because Coach Paige is like Kamogawa, very tough and always getting on one of the veteran boxers, lol.

But coach actually gave me a compliment today, which was ā€œwow, you are looking a lot more loose and fluidā€. So I was hype about that, lol. Unfortunately here in Cincinnati, it has gotten really cold, and the heat was not on in the gym, so working up a sweat was extremely difficult. So here is my progress report:

  • Have the 1,2,3,4 combination down
  • I have finally gotten jump rope down and can go for seven rounds
  • Starting to develop better footwork
  • Starting to lean out more and have better Cardio

Either way I am slowly progressing. I am also taking it way more seriously. I am starting to cut out unnecessary things from my life so I can focus more on boxing I got free tix to the Cavs / Wizards game, but it infringed on my boxing practice so I gave em away). A coworker is having a going away party tomorrow, but I wonā€™t be able to go because I have to go to the gym and train. So yeah, I can say that I love this sport and though I am not planning on going to high with it, I love the training and everything.

Good shit! Youre def further along than me. I still cant jump rope longer than a minute straight.

I want to take boxing as far as i can, whatever that may be. But i cant get ahead of myself yet, gotta get the basics down

I feel it man. The fact that you are sticking with it is really good. I have only been doing it a month and Iā€™ve already seen several new guys drop out. It most definitely is not for the feint of heart, but the reward for the dedicated is great. My gymā€™s motto is ā€œwe take you as far as you wanna goā€. I think what I like the best is that there is no class structure. Basically you go in and do your jump rope, shadow box and then you get with the coaches to see what they want you to work on. I think that is what bugged me about Karate is that since it is a class and they more so went at the pace of the beginners which is good to drill things into your head, but after a while it gets stale. I do know if going pro is something you wanna do, then you need to talk to the coaches now and see if they can start fleshing out a plan for you. Depending on what area you are in, I would recommend to start training for the Arnold Classic, and if you were to start now, you would be more than ready for that tourney. But keep training even when you arenā€™t in the gym. Since I want to be in a certain weight class, I am cutting and really fine tuning my body so I wonā€™t regret it later. As far jump rope, just continue to work on it. I finally got the rhythm down to where my feet barely leave the ground, thus giving me better control. I would also recommend jumping to music as well. I know at our gym, we always have music playing and it really helps to get a rhythm down.

Ive talked to multiple coaches and they all say the same thing pretty muchā€¦since i am so out of shape and never boxed before, i have to start from literally the bottom. So they told me to just keep doing level 1 classes (strength/conditioning). Ive started level 2 classes which is bringing in more formwork, mitts, basic defense and combos.

Ill def keep the communication going tho. Currently im going 5 days a week, with wednesday and sundays as my rest days

Good stuff. Bas9cally my coaches were not so nice, lol. I told them I was interested in entering a tourney and they threw me to the wolves. So they hold me to the same standard as they hold their pros. I actually go more than some of the vets. But yeah, they structure at my gym is basically personal responsibility. If you want to be there then you will be there. I basically joined to help supplement my Judo training, but I am finding that I am enjoying it mass.

The biggest thing I am worried about is the diet. When they start implementing that hardcore, I will be in for it, lol. I already have to drink a gallon of water a day if not two. But I do things like jump rope at home and I even have a boxing timer app to do a few rounds of shadow boxing daily. Its good that you are sticking with it, you will see things start to fall in place soon enough.
