The Boxing Thread

@NickRocks: I also recommend watching match videos of certain boxers to gain an idea about tech. For example I have been studying up on the Jab so I have been watching a lot of Tommy Hearns, Foreman and Holmes to name a few. Basically I don’t plan on fighting professionally (though I can get my pro license if I stick with it). I basically want to not get embarrassed in this Karate tourney.

Would you guys recommend actually getting in incredible shape before joining a gym? I have always been interested in joining a boxing gym or a martial arts studio.

Also, I remember someone told me joining a boxing gym is stupid because you’re giving yourself “brain damage” for no reason by sparring (implying that if you’re not a pro boxer there is no point to risk any damage). What are peoples thoughts on that?

did your friend who said that join a boxing gym and get brain damage? otherwise he sounds like a very ignorant indvidual

i have a gut and my legs are jelly, the product of being a lazy bum the past 3 years and getting a car so i dont walk anymore. I joined a boxing gym because I love the sport.

Well if you join a gym and they make you spar then I would say think twice, because a gym should help you achieve your personal goals. Granted I joined a boxing gym to do extra training when I am not doing Judo/Karate. Trust me I was not in the best shape when I started back doing martial arts, but it helps you get in shape. I think boxing will get you in ridiculous shape because of the insane amount of conditioning that you go through. If you are iffy about being in shape, then I would suggest that you start dong 50 situps/pushups a day along with walking/jogging 2 miles a day. Like I said before, I do a lot of weight training so the non cardio stuff is a bit easier for me, lol.

Also your friend sounds like he is speculating because when you spar you wear head gear and you don’t go full out because you don’t want to get injured.

Getting in shape before going definitely helps. If you’re out of shape the workouts will kick your ass and make you tap unless you have good determination. I spent the whole summer skipping rope for 20 minutes and running 6 miles 4x a week before I got back in the gym. The cardio endurance I built up helps a ton(Admittedly I was in somewhat a modicum of shape). The brain damage thing is just the nature of the beast(Suffice to say getting hit in the head is not good for your health). Only thing you can do is work on your skills, and hopefully have a coach that is smart enough to not toss you to the wolves once you start sparring.

So I got to see my first boxing spar tonight. It was really intense. Since our gym’s heavyweight champ has a fight coming up in two weeks he ended up sparring our middleweight to get his speed up. Watching those two was like watching Takamura vs a dope Miyata (sorry for the HnI reference). It was really motivating for me to step my game up boxing wise. Granted I have graduated from Jabs/straights to hooks, I still have a long way to go. I am anxious to start working on my footwork as well, but I understand that I have to crawl before I walk. It’s weird because I feel that if I skip boxing, I feel that I am cheating myself. I now can jump rope for a good six rounds without getting too winded, and my shadow boxing is getting better as well. This past Tuesday was rough, because Monday was the training from hell and me and one other guy showed up to train (granted we were beat up, lol). But yeah, i am loving this training regiment soooooo much, and I hope I will be in good enough shape to not embarrass myself at this Karate tourney. So @NickRocks, keep up the good work bruv. You will get the hang of it soon enough.

Also is anyone gonna watch the Klitschko/Povetkin fight this Saturday? I have to work until 10, but I will be sure to catch it as soon as I get home, and If I get my hands on some streams I will hook you all if you get at me.

today was my second class (ive been going everyday so far though to work out class or not). different teacher, older guy. we focused more on the punching motions today, proper jab, straight using the floor to power punches. Keeping chin down elbows in, the back shoulder hidden in profile. did some ridiculous pushup pyramid shit and speed punches, my arms were hella heavy. didnt leave me feeling as dead as tuesday, either thats improvement or i just didnt work as hard. going tomorrow after work again.

So 8 weeks is the timeline for me to get in shape to start sparring

Good luck bro! I watched our heavyweight pro spar and I know it’s not something I really want to do, seeing as I am a Judo/Karate guy, lol. I just train with them because their training is getting me in really good shape than the other stuff. But if coach suggest I spar to get a feel for it, then I will try it out.

Keep doing work both in and outside the gym. Stay disciplined and level headed.

So week 1 comes to a close with tonight and again the cute coach who is by far the toughest workout. She loves those burpees.

-learned how to throw straight power right
-got a bit better at jumping from rope, from terrible to bad
-can feel some muscle under my stomach fat
-gf says stomach looks smaller i cant tell
