Well, for one, torrenting movies is technically stealing. We can argue back and forth all day whether or not it’s actually ethical, but it is technically stealing.
Also, unless you are getting 50GB files, the movies you are stealing are probably not of the same quality as their Blu-ray counterparts. Even if you were, though, the convenience of having a disc is a huge plus for a lot of people.
Thank you for the quick response. I won’t argue that it’s ethical, I know it isn’t. I’m just trying to understand the argument for the cost.
I have one other question. Let’s say I have a pretty high end monitor, I think I keep the resolution at 1600x1050. What would be a reason (other than larger size) to purchase a seperate tv to watch the blu-ray movies on? Wouldn’t the movies actually look better on my monitor than they would on a tv?
Well, 1080p resolution is 1920x1080, scanned progressively (every line drawn per frame), so it is a little higher than what your monitor is capable of.
Also, depending on what kind of TV you get, you can also get other benefits, like higher contrast ratios and things like that. From what I see, most computer monitors offer high (progressive) resolutions and fast response times but generally shitty contrast.
Also, when you get up to resolutions this high and higher, screen size does matter. Whereas with older displays and 480i SD resolution your picture just ends up being blurrier as you increase in screen size, with HD resolutions, you will have a crystal clear picture with display sizes up to over 100 inches.
EDIT: I recently upgraded my TV. My old TV is a 37" Westinghouse monitor, and my new TV is a 40" Samsung. Even though they are almost the same size and display the same resolution, my new TV has much better picture quality because of its higher contrast ratio and better backlighting. The higher the contrast your display is capable of, the more shades of gray it will be able to display, so you will be able to see more subtle tones aside from just “light” and “dark.”
Thx for the info. I appreciate it. A few more questions…I’m probably a few months away from the investment but I have seen some 40-42" 1080p HDTV’s for pretty low prices advertised on tigerdirect.com. Are there any brands that you think I need to stay away from? Any brands you recommend?
Also, are the blu-ray discs you get from netflix burnable? What stops people from just making a copy instead of buying them new?
Up to 35 now I have a list of like 100+ bd’s I plan on getting and that doesn’t even count the bd’s thta have and will be released since Im ade that list last month it’s good to see distribution companies getting off their ass with long overdue releases.
fight club, aliens, alien, n pulp fiction coming out in 09! (2, 5, 7, 9 favorites XD)
Transformers, dark knight (especially scenes shot with imax cameras), and wall-e look 2362374623412312313785 times better then anything else I own I’m still floored at the picture quality every time.
Edit: yeah some extra footage of si ncity does feel out of place but I still prefer the recut version to the US theatrical one.
Not really. The best thing you can do is stay within your budget. Otherwise, the classic good brands, like Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, etc. are still the good brands today.
BDs are all copy-protected. As well, even if they weren’t, Blu-ray burners and BD-Rs are still prohibitively expensiveat least expensive enough to not be worth your time to copy movie discs.
One thing a lot of studios are doing these days, though, is digital copy. When you buy a movie on Blu-ray, they include a digital copy of the movie on a separate DVD. Disney actually includes the DVD version of the movie itself.
Yo dumb ass question here. I have noticed some Blu-ray players sort of speed up the film. It looks smooth, almost too smooth. Should I lay off the rocks? The only time I noticed this is on those displays at Fry’s or Sears.
A lot of posters on HDD are still butt hurt over HD DVD, since the site was originally founded as an HD DVD site. I left that place for Blu-ray.com and never looked back.
But yeah, regarding 120Hz, sure. Just be sure to turn off that TrueMotion shit, or your movies are going to look like they were shot with a Handicam. If you turn it off, you should be able to get 5:5 pulldown, which will reduce judder you would otherwise get with 3:2 pulldown at 60Hz. If that’s worth several hundred dollars to you (it isn’t to me yet), go for the 120Hz TV. Don’t bother to go with 240Hz or 480Hz in the future, though; you’re just going to get 10:10 pulldown and 20:20 pulldown, respectively, and those aren’t going to have any benefit over 5:5 pulldown.
And yes, the Skynet Edition uses better encoding and has more extra features than the original T2 release.
I bought my tv over a year ago I was just commenting on how seeing 120 hz outside of a store display for the first time…so weird took me out of 1 of my favorite shows cuz I was just freaked out at how…different it looked lol.
I wonder when it’l be possible to interpolate frames without scrwing up latency for video games that would be kickass but if films already have a certain amount of blur regardless of the refresh rate isn’t it only a matter of time before comapnies like lg, sony, panasonic, etc get better at generating the in between frames so 120 hz doesn’t look as weird as it does?
No, because it’s the change in frame rate that makes it look weird. You know how movies always have a “film quality” and a certain look to them? Part of that has to do with them being shot in 24 frames per second. If you change that fundamental quality, you will inevitable change the look and feel of the movie.
For games, though, who knows? Maybe they will look better. PS4 is going to be beast.
I actually like auto motion plus, I keep it on low and don’t use it with all movies though. It works really well with animation and cgi imo. It does make most games look better, but I never use it. Any extra processing causes lag. I use game mode to cut the lag, turns all the bells and whistles off.
I absolutely agree with you on 240/480 mhz… Such a marketing ploy. I guess if you have a PC rig running some game over 120 fps on it?
Hows Akira on Blu Ray? Worth the $30-50 I keep seeing it for? I’ve seen the movie before, but some people said it was like a completely different movie on Blu Ray
