There was a time where People thought Seth was bad?
I’ve gone through my fair share of annoyance in adjusting to SFxT Bison but I honestly feel right still using him. I’ve always been a more lame and footsie / poke heavy Bison user anyway so it wasn’t too much of a change for me here. I’ve taken to pairing Bison with Guile for a real lame and annoyance type team. Its very basic and relies on reads and knowledge but I feel it works quite well.
With meter building and damage gems the 2 characters can both keep out a chunk of the cast. I find that Bisons footsies gives the Tekken cast alot of trouble with getting in. Things become hard once there in but I keep my meter for EX PC or the occasional Super after a launcher.
I’m not really saying Bison is bad, he just doesn’t feel quite right to me. And admitting I don’t know what to do in certain situation’s isn’t a complaint or a reflection on the character … hell, I want to make him work. I suppose it’s entirely possible he’ll click with people and that you’ll see him do work, but right now that feels iffy to me. So, whatever.
Ironically, Seth players did, lol.
People just get mad when their char isnt perfect and has FLAWS.
So Im thinking meter gems and either Defense or power gems.
i was messing around with him today cuz my buddy asked to see him, and i figure if u just keep catching people, and launching them, then tagging in bison after ur combo, then repeat, ur fine. He really sucks all over again. This isnt a Seth situation, its worse. He really has none of the tools the other fighters in this game have, and 300-350 damage is nothing compared to what most of the rest of the cast can EASILY do.
I am doing 400+ with King, easily, anywhere in the ring.
Bison could be good, he just needs to be updated PROPERLY for this game. He needs a bounce, or a better juggle, and he needs something that hits overhead and he needs something that hits more than 2 times.
stand close light kick pressure, frame traps. use it, it’s stupid good.
did offline. He’s fine. Wasn’t losing to anyone less than me. Was even taking games off players who I consider better and way more seasoned.
I think people are complaining that he’s very different, not bad. Which is true, some of us are really used to SF4 Bison.
Remember guys…Bison has the fastest walkspeed, one of the best pokes and if anything is arguably one of the best “support characters”. (In a way that he acts as a bridge to open the opponent for characters like King, Hugo and Asuka.) I agree that you have to play him lame, kinda like Guile.
If they turtle, then that’s exactly what you want…switch to the other character and make them regret blocking.
Someone mentioned this on the team thread. Start off with building meter and playing footsies with Bison (defense/speed/meter gems equipped) and once you get that opening switch to the other character…and keep them for pressure. Once you get a big life lead it’s back to Bison and playing lame until the clock runs out. (and lol if they turtle) And if they pressure you, don’t forget every character can alpha counter so use it if you get the chance. (And honestly…in this game I can’t think of anyone who does good against pressure.) He just requires dedication. (or dictation)
I didn’t drop Bison, but I dropped him on my current team. I still use him with Kazuya from time to time but right now it’s Guile/Ogre for me until I understand the game better. Playing lame with Guile certainly helps improve my Bison.
Free1up said it best. “He’s not trash, he’s actually really good at playing team ball.”
I think people still do. lol
you shouldn’t be using alpha counter unless you have to. Its a waste of bar, and I would rather just sub in a character who can reliably deal with pressure (SRK’s, counter attacks, etc) and keep that one bar.
And sure he has good poke range. So do many other characters, not to mention Vega. The difference is, he is also lacking OTHER tools. Its not like he’s missing a few here and there. He has NONE of the tools most of the rest of the cast do. None of his moves have more than 1 or 2 hits, so safely tagging during a combo is pretty much out of the question. He can’t ground/wall bounce to extend combos or set anything up. He has no high/low mixup, or mid attacks, so crouch blocking with an anti-throw gem literally DESTROYS his entire gameplay. Seriously, play a Gief in this game and tell me how its fair that every single attack Bison has can be defeated by lariat or SPD, while crouch blocking. And he has no reliable AA except cHP, and neutral jump attacks (which are REALLY unsafe). sHK days are long gone, as that only AA’s if they’re stupid and jump from like full screen to 1/4 screen distance.
The entire point is he is either boring as shit to play, when u beat some scrub. Or he gets the shit beat out of him, because he doesn’t have the tools or damage that most of the rest of the cast have. Turtling with a good AA in this game fucking destroys him. And the best idea most people have had regarding him is “play lame, run the clock (which will be patched soon), and use him to tag in somebody better.” How is this a strategy? This is more like an excuse to just give the fuck up on the character, lol. If you’re obsessed with him having a somewhat decent poke, perhaps its time to just find a character with a little more options who can still poke well. May I suggest THE ENTIRE REST OF THE CAST?
I’m not going to be too Emo about Bison really. At first I was really unhappy with his Scissor Kick pressure but it looks like he won’t be that great offensively. I was disappointed myself as I figured in a Versus (Cross) game Bison would be offensive, be given a bit more and would be different from his SF4 counterpart. I still think that as an individual character he isn’t too hot.
I like him on point as people are saying, building meter and being a general nuisance. I think he works really really well with Heihachi. Heihachi is quite slow so he struggles to get in, but once he’s in he has ridiculously good mix-ups and ambiguous cross-ups. Bison is the character to use to launch into Heihachi so he’s essentially got a free in. So yeah he is a great team player. If you’re teaming 2 vs 2 with someone at a tournament you won’t be getting praise using Bison from casual players watching the game, but know that your footsies and whiff punishing ability essentially is the critical thing that gets your high damage secondary character the mix-ups.
Also I some people on the Rolento forums complaining about their character (lol), so I’m deciding to take a more positive outlook on Bison in the grand scale of things.
Uh, no.
Tekken characters barely have good anti-airs.
Tekken characters barely have any good ways to deal with pressure.
Tekken characters barely have any options on wake-up. (The only ones I can think of who does is Asuka, Ogre and Kazuya.)
Tekken characters barely have good pokes. (If any at all.)
Does that make them bad? No. Yeah they have combos and damage but most of the barely have ways to get in.(lol Asuka. lol Marduk. lol King. lol Heihachi.)
Rolento barely does damage (even worse than Bison) and relies heavily on pokes… does that make him bad? His overhead is way too predictable as well.
Guile? Dhalsim? Poison? Fuck, even Yoshimitsu. Are you telling me I should rush down with them?
I also mentioned building meter, so someone like Hugo can put it to good use. It’s more of a gameplan than an excuse.
And when did I say someone better?
You seem to be obsessed with damage, well then get a partner who does that. Remember this game is very footsie heavy.
Let’s not forget Bison beats Tekken characters.
This. Hell Steve players think he’s terrible despite easily dealing 50%+ damage with 1 meter.
Complaining about him being different is alright, but being bad? It’s so early to tell. Remember Morrigan in UMvC3? Exactly.
Cammy players in AE thinks she’s bad, does that make her bad? No.
Rolento’s overhead is the greatest telegraphed joke. If anyone gets hit with it, you need to drink some coffee or power drinks.
It would hve been cool if they gave Bison psycho banish or a motion style psycho shot.
oh one thing i picked up the other night, crouch mp seems to be a nice poke now, did they do something to it or am I imaging things?
I think it’s important to play him with a character that gets a lot off Bison’s poke-confirms-into-launcher. Getting 350+ damage meterless of a s.MK into some nice Oki setup is really gross considering how good Bison’s walkspeed and s.MK or s.RH pokes are.
I’ve also had no problems landing throws with him, again because of his great walk-speed and frame traps.
I don’t think he’s among the best in this game, but I think he’s competitive and certainly playable.
lol WHAT? A small handful of characters might have no wakeup or AA. But MANY MANY have AA, including on wakeup, and great wakeup options. Just using King as an example, he can RPB AA, or counter air/ground, and he can use meter to extend combos. Hell, a FEW Tekken characters have full out counter attacks.
not damage obsessed. Just tools obsessed. Bison doesnt even have a FRACTION of what other characters have for tools. In a game where virtually every character has a juggle/wall bounce/ground bounce/overhead/multi hit attack/medium attacks, and Bison has NONE of them. If I wanted to play somebody who relies on pokes to get in, and setup other characters, I could just use Vega, who IS much better than Bison in this game (with overheads, multi-hit attacks allowing for tags mid hit, faster pokes, and farther pokes).
Oh I’m so sorry, where was this stated again? Last I checked, I’ve seen quite a few take his ass to court, simply by crouch blocking.
so you’re defence is that since some other people don’t like their character, Bison’s flaws must not exist…o…k…
I’m not saying he’s absolute garbage and I hate Bison. I am saying he lacks the tools in this game to succeed at all. When people’s strategies with him are “use him to get your partner in” or “try to run out the clock”, stop trying to pretend there isn’t an issue
Viscant is apparently using Bison. Huh, interested to see his reasonings.
Not that many. I use King and I honestly think he doesn’t have GREAT AAs. (OK, but nothing too special)
Air to airs are stronger in this game. Hell Attack is pretty good to use as an anti air. (I use it and it’s been working so far.)
Hasn’t Bison always been more of a “know your fundamentals” character instead of one with a lot of tools?
Yeah, I think Vega is better than him too, but I don’t think that should discourage you. Bison still does great at what he’s supposed to do.
The last thing Tekken characters wanna do (unless your Raven, Jin or Yoshi) is turtling or being on the other side. They can’t really handle pressure at all, and I’m not talking about Bison’s.
On the other hand, it’s so hard for most of them to land a hit on Bison, which is what they want to do.
Read the post I quoted. It’s no use thinking your character sucks because you don’t have that many succession with him (lol if anything Bison is giving me the wins), you need to work for that.
Just having to be more positive for your character actually helps.
But it works. Like very well actually.
Because he’s easy. I mean, getting down to brass tacks, that’s basically it. I run around with devil reverse/headstomp to build meter at first, then I poke if they try to advance on me. If I land a hit I bring in Zangief for his oki/damage. If it gets down to around 30-40 seconds and I’m winning comfortably I’ll find a way to get Bison back in then I’ll run away some more using the clock, devil reverse, s.forward and ex psycho crushers as my main weapons (in that order).
I don’t like Bison’s solo combos, in fact I don’t even do any solo combos with him besides jump strong strong, s.fierce xx psycho crusher. Every hit from him goes to Zangief/Hugo/Vega.
I don’t think Bison is a great character although he can brick wall off a lot of characters with bad pokes. But he’s easy, so I play him while I learn the rest of the game. It’s working well so far. I don’t expect that trend to continue.

Held drop him, no doubt.
I want to see what EMP Hiro is doing with him.
guys, bison will be okay. I admit he is shit in a lot of respects but the footsies are so nice in this kind of footsies = damage game. I mean he shuts some people down simply by virtue of st. mk to chain launcher to a damaging partner. Not to mention a lot of us are probably not maximizing his damage yet. He won’t be top tier but simply st. mk to launcher will make it so he will never be garbage. I really think its that good.
