The Batman thread: MkII

I was reading in Comic Shop News yesterday that Lord Death Man will appear in Batman Inc. #2! LORD DEATH MAN! He’s from the Japanese Batman manga from the '60s! That’s hardcore Morrison!

That made my day

I gotta say, “Lord Death Man” is an awesome name for a supervillain. I think that might even top the Dreaded Conquer-Lord from Moon Knight!

Also was announced 2 days ago that the Batman Beyond mini series will become an ongoing starting in January. Color me excited.

That is the greatest name I have ever seen.

Ditto.

Awesome! I have been pretty sporadic with my comic buying lately, but I’ll probably go pick up the rest of BB this weekend to catch up.

I believe you can read a story featuring Lord Deathman in the Bat-Manga: The secret history of Batman in Japan book.

I’m not really feeling this multiple batman like he’s some fucking fast food chain

Was browsing eBay and found this nice auction for most of Milligan’s Detective Comics run:

Peter Milligan Detective Comics lot! 9 books! V/F- N/M! - eBay (item 370456802233 end time Nov-21-10 19:51:49 PST)

Although brief, his run is quite good, definitely one of the better Batman runs of the '90s. This lot just has his 'Tec issues, though; it doesn’t have his three-part Batman “Dark Knight, Dark City” storyline that gave Morrison some inspiration for his current stuff. (Milligan was the one who introduced Barbathos.)

I definitely recommend reading Milligan’s issues, especially as this looks like something you can probably win for 99 cents plus shipping. (Note: I am not the seller.)

Here’s some detailed write-ups if you wanna know more about his run:

and

That Riddler cover on the third “Dark Knight, Dark City” looks fantastic. I never knew Milligan wrote Batman, if I had the money (Yes, I don’t even have .99 cents at the moment) I would attempt to get it but stuff is busy right now.

Also as Darksoul173 pointed out in the DC thread three Bat Titles are out this week, starting Morrison’s Batman World style era for all to enjoy: Batman #704, Batman, Inc. #1 and Batman: The Return #1.

So go out, buy it, and discuss Bat-fans.

Yeah, Mike Mignola did some really boss covers for those three issues of Milligan’s Batman. The story was outstanding, too. That’s probably the best Riddler as a villain story I’ve ever read. He was sinister and crazy in a way that was rather exciting. Not really how the Riddler is usually depicted, but it was well done.

I’ll look for them when I have time, I like Milligan and I LOVE a good Riddler story, they are few and far between.

Happy this thread is back, getting my copies of Batman later today so prepare for an essay come Monday, lol.

New Batman Beyond was good, I like how the covers on DC comics recently have actually happened in comic.

Falcon Punch!

Spoiler

That was hilarious, how Terry just fucking clocked GL and proceeded to take down the League pretty handidly, Bruce’s reaction to when Terry decided to go against him was hilarious as well, it’s odd to see him with a sense of humor but in this particular situation, it worked.

Other than that I think the main Batman title is working well, I am liking the Ninja angle.

Batman, Inc. and Dark Knight I’ve only had one issue of each so far but I am liking them, other than my weapon gripes in the DC thread.

Other than that Zephy informed me of BaTB ending on Season 3, but a new more darker show is set to debut after it’s end. Whether this will be on CN or not I can’t say.

Other than that, I am enjoying Dick Grayson’s interpretation on Young Justice so far. Although he is more of a mix between Dick and Tim, it’s something that works well. Cool headed, tech savvy, and able to kick ass with the best of him he is my favorite character by far on the program.

As you all might know by now (Hard to ignore), Dark Knight Rises has some more buzz around it. So far I am excited to see how this will turn out, wonder if I will see it as many times as I saw The Dark Knight lol. We shall see!

So, what have you guys been up to in the wide, wide world of Bat?

I recently finished basically all of Morrison’s 2010 Batman comics. My friend was buying all the issues so I borrowed 'em and read 'em. Batman and Robin #s7-16, Batman R.I.P. fill-in-the-blank issues, The Return of Bruce Wayne, the one-shot with Finch, and Batman, Inc. #1.

It still bugs me how terrible some of the art is (Tony Daniel and David Finch really don’t belong with the other artists in the lineup) but this is a fantastic run of comics. Reading such a fat chunk all in one sitting definitely made it easier to keep track of what was going on. Gives me better perspective of what Morrison’s doing, too. Feels like these are comics that are more about the concept and the idea of the Batman than they are comics that are actually about Batman, if that makes sense. I dig it. The whole thing leading up to Batman, Inc. even makes it feel like Morrison has just finished the first act. (Or second act, if you consider Bruce Wayne’s death to be the end of act one.) I’m looking forward to the future.

I hope one day they collect all of Morrison’s Batman into deluxe HCs like they did for Seven Soldiers. I’d buy those for sure.

Morrison is really getting innovative with the Batman titles, and he has stuff planned out like five years ahead and we are just at the tip of the iceberg. Waiting on the next B&R trade to catch up, and I’m thinking about picking up Streets of Gotham or Detective Comics…I forget what it’s called, but Dick Grayson is in that as well.

Other than that, my girlfriend is getting me the ultimate Batman Beyond collection for my birthday, so that will give me something animated to go on. I plan to buy the three seasons of Batman: TAS that I am missing, Amazon has them all for $20.99 I believe.

Streets of Gotham under Dini and Nguyen has been quite fun. (My friend collected that, too, and I borrowed those issues.) There were a couple of fill-in issues by Mike Benson that kinda sucked, and I really don’t think the Manhunter backups were any good, so the value for the price of those comics was not worth it. The last issue of Streets of Gotham that I read was particularly bad - the backup story was just as long as the main feature. Laaaaaaaaame. That’s not worth 4 bucks. I don’t wanna read no bullcrap Fabian Niceza junk.

Pretty much the same deal with Gotham City Sirens - the Dini issues were solid entertainment, but the issues by other people weren’t anything special.

because DC collected editions dept are the dumbest guys on the planet, they already did start collecting morrison’s batman in deluxe edition…mid run. As it currently stands you have batman and son, black glove, and resurrection of ras in regular hardcover format, then batman rip, batman and robin vol 1-2, and return of bruce wayne in deluxe format.

So fellow Bat friends, I have a question to ask you: Other than Batman: Year One, Long Halloween, and (Sort of) Dark Victory, is there any other early Batman/Year one style reading? Trying to familiarize myself with Batman again for a project.

Other than that like I said in the DC thread I picked up Batman Beyond #3-#6, Batman, Inc. #2-whichever is the lastest, 7 maybe? I got them all. Oh and Dark Knight #2 before it gets reboots back to #1…the fuck.

Anywho, hesitantly looking forward to the reboot Bat titles. Morrison isn’t on any of them as far as I know, don’t understand that and it’s kind of scary, I don’t recognize any of the writers on board myself.

Picked up the rest of the Dick Grayson Batman run (Currently caught up) and the first two issues of Gates of Gotham. (Also caught up on Flash and need to find two BD issues but about it).

Will read over the weekend and share thoughts.

By “Year One-style” I am guessing you mean stories set in Batman’s early days, not necessarily stories that simply approach that tier of quality. (I used my Batman-like powers of deduction by noting how you namechecked Long Halloween and Dark Victory. Yeah, I’m still drinkin’ my Haterade.)

You should check out Batman: Tenses by Joe Casey and Cully Hamner. It was a two-part Prestige Format miniseries that deals with Batman encountering one of his first crazies. Casey also did a good job positioning Bruce Wayne as an industrialist. This came out during the time when he was writing Wildcats and Uncanny X-Men, and the industrialist as hero was one of his pet themes. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s available in a TRADE, BABY.

There’s also Batman: The Man Who Laughs by Ed Brubaker and Doug Mahnke. That was a Prestige Format one-shot that I think has been collected in a TPB with Brubaker’s fantastic “Made of Wood” arc from Detective Comics.

You should also check out Matt Wagner’s two Batman minis, Batman and the Monster Men, which is followed by Batman and the Mad Monk. The first is more of a straight-on crime superhero story with some fantastical elements (the titular monster men) and it kinda reminds me of the timeless feel of a good Batman: The Animated Series episode. The second story deals with Hugo Strange. Wagner also did a three-issue Prestige mini (collected into HC and TPB) called Trinity, which is the story of the first time Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman meet. I liked it. Wagner’s superhero comics are fun.

You should avoid that one Andy Diggle/Whilce Portacio Batman Confidential arc, Rules of Engagement. That one had an interesting premise: Bruce Wayne’s first encounter with Lex Luthor, not only as a fellow industrialist, but as a straight-on antagonist. The execution was lacking, however, and I felt that too much of the plotting was just incredulous to be taken seriously.
