The Basketball Thread

I’m a 5’6" and 148 pounds and I can’t dribble to my left.

HURRAY ME

I just run down the left side every time. Get that 12 foot pull-up jumper going, and you’re unstoppable in a random pick-up game, especially off a screen. No one chases you around screens or properly defends pick and rolls in pick-up games.

any of you guys ever go to any basketball camps?

Went to NCSU summer b4 Junior year of HS.

Went to UNC-CH summer b4 Senior year of HS.

can any of you guys dunk?

^yup

only one handed tho.

It cause your black…:bgrin:

I think my left hand affects my shot. It moves the ball to the right, so I aim left to compensate. It’s a terrible habit. I find the only time my left hand doesn’t get involved is if I arc the ball really high.

Yeah, it was garbage. I learnt so much more from street ball.

lol…
on the real tho, my junior yr in HS i used to wear strength shoes like everyday for like 5 hrs at a time. Thats what really helped me get there.

What are teams?

Strengths: I’m fast so I can cover a lot of court, not easily crossed up, n i’m a decent passer.

Weaknesses: I’m 5,4 and 110lbs:rofl:

Im not gona talk right now about the actual mechanic but for shooting, practice real close first.

Practice shooting free throws but in fron of the free throw line (inside the paint). You make think is to close but belive is not. A lot of people even on the nba shoot outside their range. To be a good 3 point shooter don’t start shooting 3s you won’t have the range, making you to change the shot creating a bad habit of pushing the ball. Range is not acuire in minutes like hey I just shoot 20 shots now im warm enough to move farther away. It takes months of practice.

2.Shoot with a purpose, know how many shots you want to take. Don’t shoot for 3 hours one day and then don’t practice again in 2 weeks. Is all about consistency stablish a goal of shot to take each day, be real with yourself plus start slow and start to add more shots as time pass by. Consistency is key, steady wins the race.

Ofcourse, HAVE FUN.

I was never that good but my story is: ankle sprain, ankle sprain, anlke sprain, ankle sprain, over.

nice thread.

i finally started playin again a month ago w/ some friends, playin 21. but glad i found new people to run with.

tips for improving handling skills?

Yes, you have to practice first standing still, then while moving, all with your head up.

I recommend looking at the ball while learning it, once you get it down look up, and if you really wanna feel comfortable start doing ball handling drills fast.

And to REALLY improve in basketball, you can’t have a weak hand, meaning if you’re right handed, can’t have a shitty left, so do drills with TWO balls…Yes, bounce two balls about waist level, then alternate height, then alternate bounces like one ball hits the ground, then the other.

2-h crossover is basically one hand in front, one hand behind, just alternate which goes in front

Under the leg, i’ll just give example of one direction. You have two balls, the right hand dribbles the ball under left leg. The left hand does a crossover dribble to right hand, and then catches the ball that went under leg. Repeat with other hand.

Behind the back 2-Hand
Right hand bounces behind the back, left hand crossover to right and then catches ball from behind the back.

Basically the 2 ball drills is twice the repetition of a normal 1 ball drill. The more reps, the more coordinated you get. Now go out and practice.

5’10’’ 170lb.
pos:pg (used to play pf in JV though, big height difference at different levels. I had to completely relearn the game when I moved positions)
Strengths: Endurance, Defense, 3pt shooting, mid range jumpers.
Weakness: Attacking the rim, rebounding (I just try my best to box out)

I’m an okay passer. My passing and court vision is severely limited by my handles and first step. I’m not the most athletic guy so it makes it hard for me to draw in the defense for any good dishes. Because of this, I became fucking surgical with the pick and roll. It really is the best remedy for a pg with mediocre handles.

If you wana improve ballhandling and your a person that jog you have a great oportunity right there. You will improve your cardio plus your ballhandling skill at the same time, so forget the treadmill True, you will have to forget about what people said about you but once you do you will improve alot. Remember to switch hands to work on both hands, if your left hand is that much more weak then spend double the time with that hand.

The great thing about that is that you will economize alot of time doing 2 things at once. Plus don’t focus on any between the legs and behind the back drills yet. Just dribble, dribble, dribble and dribble. Once you get really comfortable with plain dribbling all other things will be natural, heck even don’t needing to look at the ball. The reason people look at the ball is cause they are not good at dribbling, so if you need to look at it do it (of course try not to do it in games).

Yea, one handed…maybe two if I am hyped on a drive

This is what I did when I finally got sick of using both hands and couldn’t break it. I got a piece of rope and tied it around my offhand to the back of my arm so it wouldn’t move. It was stuck in like a 90 degree angle like it should be.

Felt really awkward at first but after a week of doing this I was shooting with one hand and proper form.

Like it was said be able to handle with both hands and finish with both hands. I had a really weak offhand and practiced hard dribbling with it, layups, short hooks and flip shots until I could finish with both hands from around foul line in. Makes a big difference in being able to create your shots.

Being able to produce from either side of the basket really does up one’s level of play. Nothing feels better than beating a defensive player to the right when everyone says “He likes to go to his left.”

Anybody got any tips on increasing the vertical leap?

There a lot of books and articles you can probably find online about this. Using weight and whatnot while doing thing like toe raise. Jumping up and down repeatedly with these http://www.performbetter.com/ImagesProducts/2062P.jpg there a shit load of methods.

strength shoes…its all you need.
