The Asuka Matchup/Strategy Thread

Standing lp still works like in ssf4 if you predict when they jump…even for asuka in this game but i agree that dive kick hit confirm is too good.

Ill take a turtle over rufus any day. Hate that character so much

I guess the player’s playstyle is a factor too, since I’ll take rufus over a turtle.

the counter doesn’t throw them too far but the sweep throw (probably the best thing she has) sends them full screen like really? :frowning:

about the c.mk do they get like air reset or do they get hit while on the ground? if the latter then that’s amazing because we can buffer double kicks or whatever

I’m gonna try to get some of you guys in some online lab sessions with Asuka. Troubleshooting some of these matchups will be on the list.

fuck rufus, how the fuck do we beat guile or sagat? fuck, even sim beats the shit out of her. when i see those characters i gladly switch asuka ass for ken/juri.

I agree, and with asuka’s damage and abare, I think that even giving you the chance at that one random hit is much better for her.

Zangief is also going to be a problem. Gonna have to try that cMK AA stuff.

for sim you can easily do the counter for any ground poke he trys to do and if he fireballs you can do EX Exorcisor to go past them. And if he jumps you can do a regular air counter since his air normals are slow. I think it might actually be in Asuka’s favor for sim. Guile still looks like a problem tho.

In my experience so far it drops her hurtbox ultra-low so virtually any jump-in wiffs. And her hitbox remains low during the recovery. So as long as you don’t press it too late and get hit in the startup, you’ll usually dodge the attack, even if you start the cMK really early. Timed at the apex of their jump, they land in the active frames of the kick. I’ve been keeping it basic and just doing cMK-cHP-Launch. It’s pretty fantastic.

I was just messing with EX Sweep throw. It’s slow at 11 frames, but her rush forward gives it a range that is just shy of Zangief’s jab SPD range o_O.

A few days away from and I see soooo many helpful posts, and FlyingVe’s vid is amazingggg.

Spent some time trying this in the lab. Haven’t had time to mess with Rufus’ dive kicks or other deep jump-ins, but it could wind up being a scary option for her.

You can also do it to upkicks for a free combo just to say  that normal is really good

just did some decent testing with c.mk against ryu/law in a sesh

c.mk seemed way inconsistent. sometimes it trades, sometimes we both whiff and he has advantage since i’m in recovery, sometimes it just gets outright beat. ryu’s jump-ins are terrifying for asuka. still haven’t found anything reliable if people like playing directly over my head.

from sweep: ex falling rain gets safe jumped, ex cancan goes under so can’t tagout, any crouching normal just gets CH. I feel like (for now) she’s forced to take many jump-ins… I guess that’s good for leveling up your defense?

Well the good thing about Asuka in Tekken is that since she was underwhelming, she forced you to be a solid player: solid movement, whiff punishing, yomi. no cheap stuff… nothing to spam. The feeling I have now is eerily familiar to the feeling I got when I started her in Tekken, and is the reason why I became such a fanboy lol (hell, she’s the only reason why I’m even playing SF now). i was forced to learn every situational. She didn’t have any go to moves, yet all 100+ moves in her command list has a place in competition. once they became 2nd nature, getting wins became so rewarding; the feeling of outplaying someone. i’m actually glad she doesn’t have abuseable stuff or easymode applications (thus far). this chick is cool. breaking stuff down is awesomely fun. last couple days made me realize why I love fighting games again

Just keep at it man people are claiming that she either isn’t good or viable in this game but i don’t believe that…she’s actually got some good setups that are legit and can be used in competition. Keep up the practice!

does anyone know a good AA for asuka,i can’t seem to find one for the moment and people just jump in on me.
f+LK?

f+LK, EX Falling Rain, s.LP, nj.MK, cross art, c.MK (goes under some attacks).

Aside from f+LK the rest are very unreliable, or need meter (EX Falling Rain and Cross art)

Just thought of something, has anyone tried Oniku as an anti-air?!
the hitbox looks like it should hit in the AA area o_O

I was losing badly to a Rufus, Gief, Guile and Ryu

Vs Gief, I felt Asuka couldn’t do much vs Gief, his mixups and footsies are better than hers. I just felt like I couldn’t do anything in this matchup. Any advice on how to approach this match?

Same with Rufus, meterless Asuka just feels quite ass vs his pressure.

Ryu and Guile seems to just be able to keep her out all day.

Against Rufus, I just switched out Asuka for Julia and dropkicked his ass . Seriously though, the only time I did anything with Asuka was ex falling rain, but if I missed timed it, I was screwed.

I feel much the same in most matchups. It seems I win more games by scaring opponents early on with a psychic AA, counter or one decent damage meterless combo. If I can’t get anything going though, my Asuka just crumbles under pressure (to be fair though, so do my other characters, I’m pretty bad on defense).

Landing the Cross Art as an AA earlier today for the first time felt awesome. Hell, landing anything with her feels pretty awesome.

I think people need to remember she has a counter when playing the footsies game. If you can’t outpoke your opponent, bait one out and counter. It’s a free way to get in and start wrecking shop. She is a largely prediction-dependent character, so it’s something we’re all probably going to have to get accustomed to.
