The art of Rapid Double-Tapping

So when I was watching players like gootecks and Justin Wong playing, I noticed I always heard a rapid double click. I’m pretty sure this has been used for a while now, so correct me if I’m wrong here.

I think this is a rapid 1-2 with your middle and index finger. It’s used to nearly never mess up link timings, which can come in handy during tight situations.

I used to always time my links, and would get them around a 90% area with Chun’s low short jab jab stand fierce, which isn’t quite good enough for tournament play. The low short jab jab isn’t hard to connect, but double tapping the fierce makes it very easy to time and not so much effort.

The reason I even brought this up is because my friend used to do it another way. He used to double tap it with one finger, which would take way too much time or effort and straining doing it. A good example for a video is Harmonaz’s kara demon tutorial, except with the jab jab you would be using the tip of your fingers (the way I most commonly see it).

To the vets, this may be nothing new to you, especially if you chill with top players all the time. This is more for the newcomer and new stick users, another reason why a stick has advantage over a pad (this seems very practical on a fight pad, though).

A lot of times doubl/tripple tapping becomes more of a stylistic thing than anything else, like I can land any non 1 frame link with certainty, but its more fun when you tripple tap just for effect.

I tried the double tapping method but i rather just learn learn the timing, too much effort.

lol plus it’s hard to double tap on cheap hori button

Nice, you have some good execution then. I have certain days where I can time decent, but for those when I can’t I think it’s handy to have this as sort of an autopilot link timing.

I’m curious about triple tapping…is it worth the effort? Or just flashy as you said? Which fingers are used?

Triple tapping is like using your anular/middle/ pointer in that order. But again I end up doing it more for flash than anything, like a simple combo like c.lkx3 into dp, you tripple tap the dp, or piano from fp to lp even though you know you’re gonna get the fp. idk just one of those things

I wonder if Guy’s FF chain in SFA can be double tapped, I don’t think it can.

You’re talking about drumming across multiple buttons here. He’s talking about double tapping a single button. Different uses.

I’m new to sticks myself, so this info is greatly appreciated. Thank You SRK.

I didn’t know it works for regular links as well… good thread

No hes talking about both, drumming/piano is different from tripple tap but can be done with the same finger input. 3 fingers to hit 3 different buttons vs 3 fingers to hit the same button in succession.

I’ve been doing it for years now and it’s become more of a habit, but helps out with strict timings on certain things.

i’ve always called it the “art of button mashing” not the “art of rapid double(triple)-tapping”

i used to do it, but not anymore
i prefer perfectly timed single presses
it feels much more impressive

so i train very hard for precision

there r many games out there that penalize this kind of thing
and thats mostly the reason y i’ve turned away from doin it, even in a game like sf where it wont penalize u

If you can do it twice, the chances of the link coming out are doubled. So why the hell not?

Also, this shit helps ALOT in Vampire Savior.

I had asked a similar question in a different thread because I’ve only been playing on a dpad and never saw this method of using two fingers for a single button press. I didn’t understand the intention of it until I started thinking about it more. It’s “in case” you missed the timing so you have a better chance for getting the move in (that’s what I’ve understood from this thread as well).

For those who want to see what he’s talking about, watch Tsuji as he does his rekkas (player on the left side of this video that is playing as Fei Long):

i’m confused, are you guys talking about double tapping with a stick?

buttons

So I talked to ramza today, he does it a different way. He leads with his index finger and uses the middle to follow up, and slants his hand a bit sideways.

edit: snaek, I don’t think you read my post. The art of mashing is tapping the button twice very fast with 1 or 2 fingers, rapid double is using a smooth and precise technique to nearly ensure a link.

no i didnt misread…

i jus call it "button-mashing"
whether u hit it twice, three times, or more

not to be confused wit the doa kind of “button-mashing” either

yesh, it is used skillfully
but i still call it mashing, since u r pressing the button more times then the move is actually commin out
even if its only 1 extra time, i’d still consider that mashing

but thats jus semantics really…

unless “rapid double-tapping” is the official name, i shall continue to call it mashing lol

and i still think single button presses r more impressive
however, there really isnt much of a reason to do so, other than personal gratification

but as i said earlier…some other games do require precision, and will penalize multiple-presses

Yeah, most of the people I’ve heard that use it just call it a “double tap.” Don’t really know what else you would call it, haha.

Awesome link, dude.
