"The answer lies in the heart of battle." Ryu Video Thread

Hmm, that might have been why he was letting all those backdashes in the latter matches go unpunished. I just remember seeing Sabin escape a lot with backdashing.

Sabin outspaced Daigo. Didn’t get predictable and just kept him at the perfect distance. One of the best displays of just raw footsies Dhalsim I’ve ever seen. Almost no combos, IATs or yoga zoning, just evaded fireballs and poked. Makes me want to pick up the game again.

Can’t understand how he got pro players with that cheap tactic lol

Yeah. It’s frustrating when you get hit by it… But if you play with only a group that never uses it, I can see how you might fall to it from time to time. You can get used to assuming that the other guy is going to cancel it to avoid the high risk.

Sometimes, you really just got to give your opponent no respect. Thinking a tactic “cheap” will just make you susceptible to it.

Here is a first to ten that I get completely destroyed on.

Besides the obvious execution mistakes im making…what am I doing wrong as far the matchup? Its sad that I can’t even play charge characters without being scared of how huge they punish.

Thanks for any help

Well TBH if you stick to the basics of anti-air, and safe fireballs you should win, it’ll require you to turtle/zone well, that’s what he’s doing anyways. The reason either of you is losing is the typical, giving free damage away though. Due to being a charge character, he’s not going to give as much free damage away so it’s no surprise as to why he wins

The reason you’re losing is that you’re being aggressive at the wrong times, The Ryu tutorial video talks about expecting to just combo at will or attack for no reason against a blocking player, you yourself need to create these opportunities.

These opportunities occur at/after critical moments and you need to be aware of them. Your most devastating combos should come after a knockdown/throw, The aim is reliable damage, not just a blow exchange, where you lose out to charge characters.

teamkaus: Here is a bit of constructive criticisms. I’m no pro but here’s what I’ve researched and found to be true in practical experience:

 1. Waaaaay too many jump-ins, brah. I believe one of the cardinal rules for Ryu vs. Honda is, don’t jump (not including when an opportunity presents itself, but as a general rule). You shouldn’t have to. I realize some of the time you were reacting to his jump and attempting to catch him (j. HP in the first round), but Honda has a LOT of priority in the air so you’re taking a risk. Which leads to…

 2. Be patient. As you know, getting hit by Honda freakin’ HURTS. But, by default Honda needs to come to you to deal damage - he has no projectile. The classic “fireball trap” can work really well on Honda, where you throw Hado after Hado and be prepared to SRK once a jump-in comes your way. (One thing to keep an eye out for: some Honda players like to neutral jump to bait an SRK for a big punish. This guy did just that near the start of the second round. Just be aware of it and be on the lookout so you don’t get caught.)

 3. Be more conservative with your SRKs. I saw some random SRKs in there. Try to use it when an opportunity presents itself; a few times it looked like you tried to anticipate an attack and went to counter it with an SRK, but it got blocked instead. You had a good FADC in there after a blocked SRK, but followed it with another SRK. Sometimes that’s a good strategy when you’ve read your opponents’ patterns, but charge characters are used to blocking so a throw attempt might be a better choice. Remember: As soon as the opponent sees you’re a bit SRK-happy they will start to bait that crap something fierce.

 4. I saw a couple SRK > FADC > Ultra attempts, but with how often this Honda was jumping in, you could have easily landed an anti-air jab SRK > Ultra. Look for your Ultra set-ups. This is one of the easiest ones in Ryu’s arsenal, so be prepared if the opponent jumps in. Keep practicing SRK > FADC > Ultra as well.

Other than that you’re doing quite good. I really liked your reactions to his headbutts, you caught him a few times with M.Punch and jabs. Also good on your Hados catching a few jump-ins. Keep it up, and definitely keep playing against Honda! Experience with the match-up makes all the difference.

Sup Bros, i uploaded a Combo vid. There are many chars included with Ryu.
Enjoy it ;).

Let’s see, his play lacks the use of any combos, use of normals when they should be used and is essentially a slightly refined form of button mashing. Oh and to top that off he taunts. It seems like your friend is new to fighters and is now a flowchart ryu player, that’s not a good thing.

I’d suggest sending him off to the Ryu Tutorial Video thread and watch those videos, there’s a lot to improve on if he’s willing.
