"The answer lies in the heart of battle." Ryu Video Thread

does the time goes or pause when you do ultra? never pay any attention to it

time keeps going, it’s a viable way to win by time up… i think you have to do it just under 3 seconds left and by the time it he throws the metsu it will say time up

so this means that say you do ultra while chun li is not in charging mode, she will be able to charge during ryu’s ultra animation and do her ultra to counter ryu’s? … i hate that

yup always been like that.

I love doing Ultra with 3-4 seconds left in the game. Adds insult to injury because your taking away what little time they have left to attempt a comeback.

^ I do this too… so genius its unreal.

Why is DarthPaul giving aggro advice, I bop him all the time on PSN CE mode with balrog. mad free

I dunno, why are you being a dick about it?.. Guess it’s just the natural order of things. Balrog online is bullshit anyways.

EDIT: No one bashes Brotha British but ME!!!

Nice set, both are quiet good.
very good with there hadoken game.
they never give opportunity to mestu by waiting the end of the oponment ultra buffer.
and the few time they made the mistake, then opponment dirtectly punish them.

nice set.

They’re definitely fun to watch. Crazy punishes for the most part. I really wish I had their execution.

Yeah both are definitely pretty solid.

Also :

quiet = silencieux
quite = assez

Hey, this is my first time recording and uploading videos of me playing in my scruby way.
It’s a little hard to get used at first because I play my PS3 on HD and I have to go SD. I’ve used a capture card, with DScaler on my computer.

Just as a heads up to those who will watch, I’m not a good player, I’m recording in the hopes that I and others would see the things I do wrong in battle so I can improve, don’t expect a high level play from me. Been away from street fighter for about 15 years, just came back because of SF4.

Whatever comments you have on how to improve will be welcomed.

Gj on winning that last game.

I won’t post a screen filling epic, but a few general tips I’d offer are:

 • You seem to have the (very common!) habit of throwing out lp.srk reversals after most knockdowns. Obviously, reversal srks are necessary and effective sometimes but if you notice yourself getting punished for it regularly in a particular fight you should try to tone it down and mix up your recoveries a bit more.

 • How is your FADC training going? I did notice that you tried to pull something off in the last video. Practicing FADC > Ultra, FADC > Ex attack and FADC > Safety (back-dash) are all important tricks to add to your arsenal. At G2 level it isn’t completely necessary but it’ll definitely give you an edge. Once you become comfortable at it in the training room you should start just saying “what the hell” and trying it out in real matches, even if it means losing a few games here and there. I found that forcing myself to do it real matches helped a lot.

 • Careful with your psychic srks. ; )

 • Also try to replace some of your jump-ins with dashes where possible. You probably noticed yourself getting punished for a few predictable jumps when you were using them just to cover distance.

Overall, you’re looking good so far. I noticed some good links and punishes. Work on your defence and ultra setups and you’ll be well on the way.

Nice games.

Few pointers…

AA. You need to do this as much as possible. That Balrog in the last game and the set generally got way to jump happy and it was down to you to AA him. You had alot of chances to hit him deep with a Shoryu but you didn’t.

Also work on your cross ups. Especially with somebody like Rog. But don’t get cross up happy either.

You need to also punish Balrog a bit more. An example of this was in the last game when Balrog done EX Headbutt and you punished with just throw. Hit him harder so he knows next time not to throw him out. c.MK xx Tatsu is good to throw him into the corner or c.HP xx Shoryu is good.

Good Ryu nonethless.

think of it like this. If they DIDN’T do it that way then charge characters would have to RE-charge their charge whenever someone started the animation for an ultra. That just wouldn’t be fair AT ALL. And if you are using ryu’s ultra as anything but an anticipatory punish to something or in a combo… you DESERVE to be ultra’ed back.

hard to watch cuz they seem blurry. and they kept missing their ultras…
but for the most part a pretty good and even match-up. Neither was jaw dropping but both were good. And as an akuma user the amount of missed air-tatsu crosses was depressing :arazz:

and love that there was smash music in the background. Hope it was melee…

 1. Don’t HK tatsu on opponents wake-up. Only do it on UNTECHABLE wake-ups. At distance lk tatsu x1, FB or lk tatsu x2 (or lp srk) is better anyway.

 2. Don’t HK tatsu so much… at all… lol

 3. if an akuma sucks like that one and tatsus after a blocked move… you NEED to punish that. So work on your character specific punishments so you know what and when things can be punished.

 4. when an opponent is standing over you with a shoto and you have low health… and ESPECIALLY if they have meter… learn to just block. More than likely they are trying for a safe SRK for safe chip or the kill. And something tells me that Akuma wouldn’t have even FADC’ed…lol. And once you realize they aren’t going to SRK you can either late tech the throw attempt. Or just block and be safe from the other option.

 5. Personally I like to block low and back up a little to start most rounds. That way you can counter anything thrown at you. Especially idiots starting with a HK tatsu *facepalm. The only reason you’d use a HK tatsu to start a match is to go through a FB and Jump-in combos work the same for that at the start of a match… he hit you TWICE with tatsu to start a match. Thats unacceptable since c.hp so easily kills that and jump-ins to start a match.

 6. move around more. I saw you just stand their holding block a few too many times. Backdashing helps to put a little space and stop you from learning to just sit and block as much. So learn to backdash appropriately more. This also helps you learn your spacing and keep your spacing with your character better

 7. Plz try and punish a retard-demon. Once you jump backwards at the VERY least you can trip him. Or ultra him… or combo him… So that goes to the overall theme of LEARN YOUR PUNISHMENTS.

 8. work on your combos… training room time.

 9. don’t use a grounded poke on a waking up person… EVER when they have ultra meter. Seriously… just play it safe or even maybe bait them into throwing out their ultra for you to punish.

 10. akuma match end… again… learn what to use to punish what and learn if you have a personal issue with using a certain move fast enough and switch to a different move.

 11. work on using c.hp and hp SRK/lp as anti-airs.

 12. don’t randomly SRK so much even if you are being pressured. learning to anti-air and tech throw well will help this a lot. and just because it works to mash srk for a round… just… DON’T DO IT. Bad habits work sometimes even against some good players but you’ll never win a first to ten and it will kill you more often than help.

 13. you need to learn ryu’s footsie game and optimum range.

 14. finish your c.mk pokes with a fb

 15. cross-up more and maybe learn cross-up tatsu? (although you have a lot of more pressing matter to deal with than cross-up tatsu right now).

 16. work on FADC… just in general… but also work specifically on SRK FADC to ultra. Thats the most important one for ryu by far.

 17. Maybe pick up another character? In all fighting games I’ve always found it helpful to learn to play as multiple characters so you get a better idea of each characters weaknesses and advantages and have better knowledge of punishments and where the cracks in opponents game plans are. Or the lazier version of looking in other character’s match-up forums should work for ya too

 18. Try and play good (or at least better) players that might kick your ass a lot. I know I’ve had plenty of ppl say they learned more from going 0-20 against me in one hour than from grinding through championship mode or any other fighter game equivalent and playing mostly bad or mediocre players. Even if they don’t play as ryu you will still learn a lot about the specific match-up and can learn ryu’s general spacing. And playing the same character a few times in a row I think is more helpful for learning character specific strats than playing ryu, rog, ryu, rog, bison, akuma, rog, ryu, sagat in some random order all the time. But make sure its not some guy that is downing you by triple perfects… All THAT will do is teach you to spam out srk to hope to not get perfected.

 19. Read forums… watch videos… emulate what you see

 20. Have fun doing it. You’ll learn a lot more if you find it FUN to learn to play the game. On the other hand if its a chore and your bored or irritated it might be time to take a break or maybe if it keeps up for a while just play a different game completely. I’m not gonna say to quit, but i am the first person thats gonna tell someone to make sure they are having fun while playing a game.

Thank You

Than You guys for your feedback. Here’s what I’ve gathered from your comments.

Better Spacing. I believe the best place for Ryu to be is about two or three bodies away from my opponent when I’m not directly attacking.

Not so much SRK on wakeup or as reversal. No need to explain anything, I need to stop doing it on every oportunity.

**
Also not psychic random SRK. **

FADC Training. By far the hardest thing for me to get used to, using FA and FADC effectively has been a great challenge for me, one that I have not overcome.

Less Jump In. I know that one, every time I jumped I said to myself, remember not to jump.

Anti Air, Anti Air, Anti Air. Always my biggest problem, not being able to consistently AA.

Work on Knowing when to punish. I need to work on my reaction, sometimes I know that I can punish something but for some reason I try to do it so fast that I mess up. For example on the akuma fight I jumped the ranging demon and wanted to do something so fast that ended up jumping.

Better footsie game. That is something that I need help with since I don’t have a good Idea on what to do about it.

**
Some BnB combos to capitalize on opponent mistake. **I want to try and consistently land combos. In practice mode I can get them like 70% of the time but I’m having a hard time incorporating it to a real game.

Don’t stand blocking all the time. I think a lot of the mistakes I make is the fact that I can’t deal with opponents that pressure me all the time. If the match is more controlled I tend to do better.

Don’t pressure up close somebody with Ultra. I need to stop doing that. I’ve had a game almost on the bag and have lost because the other character has a full ultra and I went there and started poking on wake up.
I do have fun with the game, I like it a lot actually. I have played other characters and now I’m going to try and stick with Ryu.

Yeah, you’ve got the idea.

Don’t feel bad if the list seems rather large though, you’ve definitely got a promising Ryu there. Keep up the good work. ; )

arapozo, if you don’t mind a few tips from someone else who is also NOT a pro, I have a few

Others more experienced, feel free to correct me if I give “bad” advice, I’m more used to Ken but my Ryu is getting damn near proficient so any corrections will help me too :stuck_out_tongue:

 1. In your Akuma match, he whiffed a few SRKs, and you blocked some too but didn’t capitalize on the opportunity to punish. If you start with something as simple as a sweep to punish a whiffed or blocked SRK, you can get a good foundation to just build up the habit of punishing them at all, and it makes working into more damaging punishers that much easier. Plus you can do worse than a sweep; you get an untechable knockdown, some decent damage, and you’re in a good place to apply some pressure.

 2. If you find yourself struggling with SRK > FADC > Ultra, which is common for newer players, there’s another Ultra set-up which many find to be a lot easier. Hit up training mode and practice doing a jab SRK on an opponent who is at the peak of their jump-in, then input the Ultra. You’ll know if you get this right  You definitely need to get that SRK > FADC > Ultra down, but this will at least give you good anti-air experience as well as an Ultra set-up option.

 3. To re-emphasize what others have said, more FADC. Building up Ryu’s Ultra meter is rarely ever a bad idea and FA’ing some attacks to get him there quicker is a good idea in most (but not all) match-ups.

 4. Anti-Airing: I’ve found that jab SRK is the most consistently easiest to land, but inputting fierce SRK when the opponent is in deep from their jump-in hits a little harder. This can be trickier though, because if you wait too long you eat a jump-in attack. Don’t forget that crouching fierce punch and standing hard kick are classic anti-air normals which are still pretty powerful.

Hope that helps!

Excellent advice on #1.

you don’t have to punish with combos or what not at first, sweep is a good thing to start with, but don’t just stick with it. you should do combos later on also including fadc to ultra. but at least you get your way to start punishing srks even with just a throw at least its a start (not saying that you should just stick with that but its a start and you can improve it later on)

everyone is a noob at first, if you want to get to the mountains peak you have to climb it and start at the bottom

Well guys, I went ahead without much training and applied some of your recommendations, and I believe that in very short time I have managed to make myself look less scrubbish.

This two matches were the same balrog from yesterday, only managed to keep 2 of the fights, for some reason I lost the other 3.

Also tonight I played another friend of mine, maybe I’ll upload them later.

Just wanted to post as a thank you for guys, so you know you’re not wasting your time. I’ll probably hit the training room for some more time this weekend and try to work on FA and FADC because as you can see in these fights they took a vacation and never showed up.
