"The answer lies in the heart of battle." Ryu Video Thread

a few quick notes

im not sure if you meant to bait her ultra out with that ex tatsu but it was nice none the less :karate:

you became defensive to a fault and your fa’s and crossup grabs became predictable. using fa’s as an aa is typically not a good idea; in this match you got punished for it nearly every time. mix in some dash cancels to keep yourself out of harms way.

be more patient on the ground, you got yourself in trouble alot by trying to jab your way out. just block and be ready to tech. also, work on your hit confirm recognition, there were several instances where you landed a c.lp and followed it up with nothing it at all.

you obviously can work on your execution (as we all can)… you had plenty of missed combo and ultra opportunities (i believe you missed the dp dc>ultra twice). also i cringed not seeing her get punished with a simple lp.dp>ultra, she was basically begging for it with all those wreckless jumpins

Can some SRK members critique my vid?

Apologies for the quality…I’m using an iPhone 3GS to record…

Aside from your execution I would suggest 3 things in particular.

1: Zoning and spacing. You didn’t control the air what so ever while Cammy did whatever she wanted to with dive kicks and jump in’s for free momentum

2: Patience…your fairly skiddish when Cammy was rushing you down and you seemed like you were very intentive on trying to jab your way out when the BEST thing you could have done was stayed patient and blocked everything to wait for her momentum to end. You also get antsy and seem to jump around a lot back and forth when really you just need to sit back and be patient instead of trying to make something happen with these sporatic jumps. You jump in WAY to much and your lucky this Cammy was all about the momentum rather then spacing or you would have eaten about 8 different Cannon strikes during the set.

3: Finalize a GAMEPLAN for yourself. Throughout this match it really seemed like you were a deer looking at a pair of head lights. It didn’t look like you knew exactly WHAT you were doing…Try to come up with a specific goal for yourself in your matches. Realize exactly WHAT you want to achieve in your match and what you NEED to do in order to win…For instance, in this match it seemed like you got combo’s here and there, and you even had some opportunities to do some damage (however your execution didn’t pull through for you), however you don’t really have a BASE game plan of what to do…you don’t look like you know HOW to apply pressure…you don’t look as if you realize the IMPORTANCE of spacing (even though I know the argument is that Cammy can break through spacing because of her mobility and specific moves, nonetheless)…these are all things to take into consideration every round you play…

Make a gameplan for yourself and set your goal towards something specific…if you want to play footsies and a spacing game, play towards that goal…if you want to rush down, figure out the specific procedure of how your going to rush down and apply pressure…the bottom line is, you can’t hope to win matches just by getting lucky breaks here and there…you need to have a game plan and a general goal of what you want to achieve…

Oh and also, stop using shoryuken’s as wake up and as a poke…thats a terrible habit and you know as much as I do that you need to break it.

If guile is just crouching, he’s obviously got a charge and is waiting for you to jump in so he can flash kick. So stop jumping in on him when you see him charging. Crossing up guile is fine as his flash kick whiffs cross ups, but generally you want to score a knock down first before going for the cross up.

There were many times you had hit confirmed your c.lk -> c.lp, and did nothing after. Try and follow up your hit confirms with damaging combos like c.hp -> tatsu or to srk.

I thought the guile was dumb for trying to have fireball wars with you most of the time from full screen. Of course ryu wins this battle. He should have spaced himself closer since his recovery from sonic boom is better than yours, and he could punish your fireballs with jump ins.

Thanks for the heads up guy, really appreciate it. I just came back from retirement about 3 to 4 months ago after 15 years of absence, and i’m using a standard dual shock pad, my hand is not like it use to be and i’m kinda confuse on certain things especially fa. but i do a agree and know that i need to work on my timing and spacing. i don’t know why but i tend to get panicked really easily

and yes i did meant to bait her ultra using that air ex tatsu  i know that if i land whether i get hit / block i will lose because of chip damage, so i tried to remain on the air for an extra few seconds using ex  i think that is the smartest thing i did on that game Lol

and i stopped after a light punch deliberately as i wasn’t too confident with my chain hoping that he will counter using a spike kick

and yes i noticed too that i missed tons of ultras :frowning:

You got me real good mate  Patience is not something that i’m very good with during the game, usually when i become patient i tend to get mesmerize by the opponent and not doing anything lol. if not i tend to get panicked really easily, i guess the only way i can deal with this is by searching the answer in the heart of batlle :wgrin:

Gameplan, i never had one :wasted: and you did make a great point, i should make them go the way i want not being bossed around lol

a great mentor of mine told me an important thing yesterday, he said don’t rely on your opponent to make mistake and messed up here and there just to get a win :stuck_out_tongue: bow down to the king

learning my chain and i will get better lol

quality is pretty good, its just that its shaking :stuck_out_tongue:
I think you did too much jumpin while guile was charging down, and sometimes you did an fa that is too close to him (but obviously he is not used to it i think as guile’s flash kick breaks fa just like that and its easy to do)

apart from that i think your ryu is pretty good but we have the same common problem, we should have punish the opponent hard after the c. lk and cr. lp connects (i’m still working on it as the problem is when we have a lag, the timing becomes different :frowning: so we can only feel it i think but if all goes well we should be able to punish them :P)

I will get better !!!

I just watched the first video, and the Balrog really had no idea what he was doing, so it was pretty uneventful.

Anyway, stop using c.HK as a poke. I didn’t see a single c.MK, but instead, dozens (literally) of whiffed c.HKs. It is extremely easy to punish, and only useful to punish pokes. It is a definite last resort. The rest of your game seemed really solid, so I was confused as to why you used something so out of place. It ended up whiffing, giving your opponent at least 10 opportunities for punishing in a single match.

Thx for the tips. Those where just casual matches. I will try to rec something more serious tonight. Thx again!

Anyone has a copy of the infamous Umehara down mp X3 > sweep video?
Been looking at the saved ustream footages but couldn’t find it.

I think it was cr. lk x 3, st. lp, sweep.

I second that request.

why dont you just try it? :looney:

Um, this is my first time here and I’m kinda stuck on how I can better myself with my Ryu. >.<
Here’s a couple (21 >.>) of online casual matches I had with my friend.

I apologize in advance for the poor quality and sometimes blurry video. My camera is meant for photos and not really for video.
I’m still having some difficulties with doing basic special moves and some links on my new joystick (shoryuken instead of hadoken, etc.).

Some constructive criticism about strategies that I should consider using is welcomed.

I can say a few things I think…

Try to start you block strings with cLK, cLP instead of cLP, cLP. The LK hits low and can catch people who are slow to transition from the standing block to the crouching block and means you can score a whole combo!

You used links… good.

You need to use more and less SRKs. More when they’re jumping in and less to punish things. It’s fine to punish with an SRK, don’t get me wrong, but you need to find out after what moves you can connect with it.

I would work on doing more footsies and work on your ground game in general. You jumped in a lot to start offense which again, don’t get me wrong, isn’t bad to do but if you do it that frequently without anything to set it up you will consistantly get AAed against higher level opponents. Use cMK, Hadoken combo, dashes, FA absorb and block strings to work your way inside on your opponent. After he is thinking about your lateral pressure, that’s when you jump in/cross up

After you get a FA crumble you go into a cLP, cLP string. I do it sometimes when I panic and am over thinking about hit confirming but you ought to use f+HP, SRK or preferably f+HP, cHP, SRK. Use LP SRK if you have a super primed to confirm into that and use HP every other instance.

You let your friend get up for free. You need to pressure him. Now, I see a lot of SRK type moves from both of you so this could be difficult until you train him to stop doing it because you’ll punish. 2 relatively safe options are to charge FA in front of him then back dash hoping to draw out their uppercut type move. Punish it when they land. The second would be to cross up with jMK, cLK, cLP, wait (if you’re not 90% sure you’ll hit your link). If he uppercuts, punish accordingly. If he waits and does nothing you’ll probably be safe next time around to go for a link. The point here is to not lose damage to a shitty technique, and that’s mashing uppercuts. You don’t NEED to do links to win, zoning, normals and your own uppercuts can easily win matches. Of course, links make this easier as you can hit confirm into uppercuts, supers, ultra. Practice this but against your friend, do a couple safe attacks and wait to see if he’ll uppercut you. If you do that two or three times and he doesn’t uppercut on any of them I can almost guarentee on the 4th time around he won’t be mashing an uppercut and you have a free reign to try the link into big damage.

More mix ups, like above, pressure on a knockdown or if he turtles. Overheads are good, tick throws are also good if he likes to really hunker down and block

Use your FA a bit more towards the max distance or just inside that of a cMK. Try to get him to go for a cMK or cHK and punish the shit outta him. Remember, you only need to wait until lvl 2 (as soon as the first white flash) before you will crumble him if it hits. You’re +3 on block so you’re also relatively safe and could always back dash if you’re getting a bad feeling while charging or after the block/hit. Make sure you punish him hard when you land this. I wouldn’t use this on his jump ins, based on the footage I’d say he’ll mash an uppercut and that will stop your focus (jump in + uppercut = 2 hits = broken focus armor)

Try to get him into that sweet spot with fireballs where you can throw one and if they jump over to punish you can SRK. If timed correct you should beat it clean and yes you can FADC, Ultra after this if you connect it before leaving the ground.

I hope that helps a bit.

Wow, awesome!

That’s a ton of help! I’m excited to practice making a habit out of those new sets of strategies! Thanks!

Ryu dittos. Me Vs Friend.

sorry dude but both of you suck with ryu. You are doing the same faults i did 2 months ago.

why?

  1. Randonm srk’s over and over again
  2. so much oportunities for ultra after srk
  3. Playing completely brainless

Please, use srk only as AA. Try to read your oppontent to get a feeling what he’ll do next. Play more patient and dont jump so much “Sr. JumpAlot”. Use Fireballs and work on your bnb’s.
If u have xbox add me to your friendlist and i’ll try to help you.

i have never scene so many random DP’s and mashing clp and clks ever in my life. holy shit. that was terrible.

1 random dps… gota go
2 Dps should only be used in 2 situations. AA and to end in a combo/link
3. stop jumping like retards seriously.
4. stop wasting meter on random shit. and learn to walk up hado with srking, and cmk xxx hado.

i was doing this stuff when i first started out for my first month of the game… just. not hard to change.
