I can’t imagine something like Utena being done today.
Also, I miss anime where a deep voiced man shout the name of the show.
MAKUROSS! MAKUROSS!
SAINT SEIYA!!
OOOH, GATCHAMAN! GATHAMAAAAAN!
I love that. I also miss those 90s “Two-Mix” style openings. Like Gundam Wing and Nadesico.
But as I think about it, maybe it’s not less gems being made(since come to think of it I can name a few more or less recent, I really enjoyed Genshiken, Ouran, Death Note, Loveless, Library War, Claymore…), just more generic crap around them. Or maybe even just me not remembering all the crap from the old days.
IMO, Black Lagoon isn’t regarded as good storytelling, nah. It’s just pure adrenaline entertainment. Kind of like a Hollywood action flick in an anime setting, with a lot of badass characters.
You can call it worse if you want it to be. People have been going on outcries on how “moe” has ruined the industry and such, when it’s just more or less a genre like any other.
The action shows, dramas, slapstick comedy, fantasy series, mecha - everything is still there. Just like in the past, there are also good shows and terrible shows.
You want some dark, macbre comedy? Detriot Metal City and Sayonara Zetsbou Sensei are for you. Mecha? Gundam 00 or even the now running Mazinger Z. Romantic drama? Toradora might fight the bill. Action? Black Lagoon from earlier, the Kara no Kyoukai movies and even the now running CANAAN might fit as one as well. Fantasy? Guin Saga’s sounding good so far. All are modern shows from 2000 onwards.
The only problem with people used to old school is that some of them (not specifically you, Inverse) have their rose tinted nostalgia glasses covering their outlook on everything.
Not reading up on newer shows with a fresh outlook and going on and off about comparisons will dampen anyone’s enjoyment out of anything; that’s what I’ve noticed from a lot of people who are like that. That’s not the way to do it. This goes for stuff beyond anime as well, which I find rather discouraging.
It’s great to bask in the light of old school. I know - since Hokuto no Ken is absolutely one of my favorite series ever - but there’s a lot of shows that people enjoy a lot nowadays as well - and a lot of garbage that they tend to avoid like they did earlier. It’s not regarded as lowering of standards - hardly. It’s that keeping up an open mind to everything lets you enjoy stuff even more than just limiting oneself to the popular shows or older series.
Gonna start this off with a statistic that has absolutely no backing to it except for my word: 99% of the anime released in the last 7 or so years have been, for the most part, complete garbage. You are right they are still making shows for all the genres listed, and they are all fucking awful. Toradora? you serious? I couldn’t handle more than an episode of that stupid shit. And it was a real drag to get through that first episode. And stupid shit is exactly what most of these shows are. Stupid, cliched anime shows with a million holes and a requirement for suspension of disbelief that would make the Wachowski brothers cringe. And don’t even get me started on trash like Kodomo no Jikan.
If there is one industry that has shined these past years has been the manga industry. There are a lot of extremely talented mangaka who aren’t restricted by all the things that go into making an anime. The 90s were fucking amazing for manga but so have the 2000s. Pretty sure I’ve read a lot more manga than I’ve watched anime, with good reason.
Quite an over exaggerated statement you got there!
Toradora was WAY beyond the cliche dramas - in fact, most of the cast breaks off the traditional stereotypes. If you’ve actually bothered to watch more than one episode, you’d know. And I’m not saying this as opinion; a lot of people noticed that from watching the series.
Which was originally a manga. In fact, almost half (or even more) of the anime airing these days come from manga and novels themselves - just like in the old days.
Now this, I concur. Manga’s been doing quite well these years as well and there’s quite a lot of impressive talent. But much like anime, a number of them can fall into cliches as well - like your aforementioned Kodomo no Jikan.
But it all boils down to preference, I suppose. Some like to see their stuff animated and some want to read it instead.
Nope. Anime is probably the worst type of art/media right now.
But I didn’t bother, because it was so bad. And this is what most people who don’t watch anime every day will tell you. Stupid overexaggerated shit about anime Japanese teenagers, the show. I would watch the show and detail out every single episode, and why it fucking sucks, just to show you. That’s how sure I am. But I don’t have the time for that.
Yes, originally a manga?? what is your point here?
But yes, you are right. It all comes down to taste.
Then you move on to say how the manga scene has prospered and is much better - yet, it’s still not free from the exact same cliches as you mentioned (Kodomo no Jikan being one of them, which is why I noted to you that it was a manga), that made anime “full of stupid shit” according to your earlier post.
Seems to be quite enjoying it too. I wonder if his immune system got powered up after all the martial arts training that could let him withstand getting a cold.
This is about as inteligent as me saying “I read the first scentence of your post and could tell the whole thing was complete shit.” Like does that even make any fucking sense AT ALL?
The manga scene has prospered and is much better indeed, because for every 10 ken akamatsus, there are a couple of Matsumoto Jiros. And that is more than enough. I think that about sums it up
That’s a very stupid analogy. I don’t need to sit through 26 epidoes of garbage to know that it’s garbage. I’m sorry you aren’t able to do the same.
Kodomo no Jikan is actually a fairly intelligent series. If you actually watch or read it you will see it deals with pedophilia in a relatively mature and realistic way. Its not …I don’t know…ikki tousen with kids instead of martial arts.
Ultimately, its easy to give broad labels to anything. I could say The last 7 years of anime has been brilliant because everything before that dull and drab robot porn full of manly women, effeminate men and incoherent pseudo artsy plots.
I did read Kodomo No Jikan, up to a certain point. To the point where the protagonist (8 year old) masturbates in her classroom, to the point where the manga portrays 8 year olds as horny fucks who know how to suck dick, to the point where the manga teaches me that 8 yos are blackmailing sexual deviants. No, it is not a ‘fairly intelligent series’ you deluded imbecile. I realize this is the anime/manga thread and all but there are some real retards here Jesus christ. And then people wonder why the otaku community is constantly being made fun of.
