There’s a trick you can try to avoid the SOD (Sleep of Death, as coined), and that’s forcing your phone to stay awake while charging. If you’re on a custom ROM, it would allow you to force the phone to stay screen on while charging, and you can always flip it face down. The main culprit for the sleep of that with that phone is the stock kernel. Sometimes, when your phone sleeps and the processor is underclocked to 300MHz, it’ll freeze up the phone, forcing you to pull your battery in order for it work again. If you’re rooted, you can download a custom rom, and consequently, a custom kernel which does not incorporate that CPU clock that freezes the phone.

I had that exact problem before I moved on to the SGS II last month.

does anyone in here own an iOS device as well? i’d like to know what opinions you guys would have of iOS vs. android.

I support iPhone, Blackberry (lolz) and Android devices at work.

Without a doubt, iPhone set the bar and had the best hardware and mobile OS in the smartphone world starting in 2007/08 . Super brain dead easy to use/configure and so on…and their hardware was sexy and very nice. In 2011/12 that just isn’t the case anymore…

Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) > iOS > Honeycomb

ICS has changed the game for me and I prefer it over iOS and Gingerbread easily. I also prefer Samsung hardware for Android in general but HTC and Motorola are slick also.

The iPhone 4s is still really good and easy to use but its just not as good as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus…for me personally. I wanted 4G speed and a larger HD display, the iPhone IMO is just too tiny and slow.

I’ve converted iPhone users to ICS who didn’t like Gingerbread/Honeycomb. ICS is like a totally different experience using Android.

Go to the store and play with both!

My Dad got me (and my siblings) an Android Tablet for christmas, however it’s locked into 2.3 (or 2.2… I forget) without the ability to update. And since it’s not 3.0, it’s not supported for Tablets, and then I can’t even get the basic google marketplace on there. I’ve had to make due with the amazon marketplace.

It doesn’t even support multitouch : /

It works decent as a Media device for my 2 year old, streaming cars during road trips and playing some educational games. But it really feels like there’s a ton of potential missing. Before I was sold on getting an iPad 3, but I may take a second look at some other android devices

I got a Toshiba Thrive a few weeks ago and I couldn’t be more satisfied. That could be an option for you.

I’m using a custom rom atm, but still stock kernel. I’m also using setcpu which I believe was the fix to the SOD issue. But my settings for charging actually put the min to 216mhz and max 312mhz. Do i have it backwards? Is the min suppose to be the 316mhz?

ok so originally i wanted to wait for windows seven phones to become available (primarily because i just love their zune-like gui) but instead i snagged a motorolla triumph during virgin’s cyber monday sale and decided yesterday to root my phone.
it was soooooo easy! i ended up installing the Miui rom. its pretty baller status since it lets you customize pretty much EVERYTHING: the startup screen, lock screen, lock, icons, font, different icon effects when you scroll pages, etc etc. i can’t believe i used to rock a cheap tracfone all these years :C. the only thing i dont like/miss about the android os is that there isnt an app menu button/folder. so whenever you download an app its gonna be somewhere on the screen, and you cant delete the icon because if you do that itll uninstall.
also, can anyone recommend a stylish weather, clock, and music player app? free/paid it doesnt matter.
one last question. do roms operate the same way across all phone regardless of what android version your phone happens to come with? im just wondering if roms that are installed on the newer ICS version have cooler features. i dont wanna miss out on the experience, ya know?

You’ve underclocked way too low for your maximum. With SetCPU, you can have a lot of different profiles, depending on your phone’s state. Just installing SetCPU will not immediately fix your problem if you haven’t properly setup a profile for sleeping. If you’re on a custom rom, flash a custom kernel. I believe I was using faux123’s stock kernel for my G2X when I had it. Ultimately, forcing the phone to stay awake got rid of my SOD problems with that phone. With ANY profile in SetCPU, at least have your MIN @ 312MHz, and your MAX at ~800MHz-1GHz, depending on the profile. If you’re maxing your processor at 312MHz, you are literally starving the phone of itself. Processes will take longer to boot, overally resulting in a sluggish phone through and through.

Even the lowly Coby Kyros, which my wife decided to buy over a Kindle Fire, has the ability to add the Google market to it, which, originally did not have. What exact tablet do you have? Maybe I can point you in the direction of getting Market on your tablet.

The Coby Kyros. I can’t get the google framework apk to run without crashing. I heard some of the different models than the one I had worked, but I have the 8125

That’s the EXACT same tablet my wife has. I was able to get CM recovery on it and flash a CM7 ROM to it, but, if you’re just looking to add market, then check this link:

Thanks, I think I tried that but I’ll follow the steps closer. Like I know I didnt install them in that specific order, nor did I turn on the debug mode

Yeah, you HAVE to install them in that specific order, else it won’t work.

Beautiful widgets should have the weather and clock taken care of, but check out HD widgets too. I really like poweramp for music.
ICS is going to have a lot of things gingerbread/honeycomb don’t, it’s a completely new version of Android. But if you root your phone it’s really just a matter of time until it gets ported.

I picked up the white Samsung Galaxy S2 from t-mobile a few weeks ago. What an amazing device! I highly recommend this phone along with the white Body Glove case for it. Simply the best!

^ This right here. You get yours rooted yet. Once drivers are installed on the computer, the SGSII by far has the easiest root method of any phone, next to z4root.

I haven’t rooted yet, but i definitely plan to very soon. I want a different boot screen & would like to uninstall the stuff I won’t ever use. After that, all will be perfect!

im still mad my LG G2X wont get ICS ota…

When you root your device, does it reset to factory settings apps wise?

No. Rooting, essentially, adds Superuser app, which grants “su,” or, superuser/higher permissions. Only factory resetting will reset your phone back to stock.
