The Android thread. Questions, comments, help, etc

So I’m pretty tired of paying $90 a month on Verizon. I’m about to make a switch to Virgin Mobile for $35 for pretty much the same plan. Just picked up a Motorola Triumph for $200 and it’s pretty impressive. I’m more impressed with the price I’ll be paying every month.

I know the reception and service won’t be nearly as good as Verizon but for $55 less, I don’t care!

Damn want to throw this LG Ally thru a window…Big Red has a sale on the samung stratosphere you think i should hop on that and then when my real upgrade comes around in april skip over too something else?

Virgin runs on Sprint. I looked at their coverage map where I live, work, and generally go. Excellent coverage for my day to day interests. $35 a month? Fuck yea! Also over 2.5 GB’s data and they only slow it to 32 KBps, no extra charges, pretty fast for email and simple stuff, fine with me.

Motorla Triumph is nice but… the default OS has several problems with GPS, Wireless connection, and random freezes (need to take out the battery type of freeze).

They’re running Android 2.2 something by default, no official statement from Motorola saying something like, ‘we are aware of these issues, we will fix them asap.’ Just some static.

I just got a beta Cyanogen Mod for Android 2.3.5 for the Triumph.(outlined here: http://www.motorolatriumphhacks.com/2011/11/24/a-primer-for-motorola-triumph-hacking-alternative-operating-systems-overclocking-hotspots-voice-functionality-etc/)
HDMI port does not work in this mod. Not sure what I could use it for, maybe presentations.
Fixed GPS problems
Fixed Wireless connection problems: With default OS, unable to make a connection to any wireless network. Now works with G only wireless WPA2 (or open), doesn’t work with any N wireless connection or mixed N/G.
The system hasn’t frozen yet. I haven’t had to power off. I haven’t had to force reset the battery.
Unfortunately, the phone is not listed on their main page yet: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices

Here is the forum where latest progress is generally kept up to date:

For instance the ‘ICS’ CM version 9 build being worked on. Some people are checking from time to time to see the progress of the ice cream sandwich build on the Triumph.

It will easily last all day if I keep GPS off or I don’t play Angry Birds for 2 hours straight. I have kept GPS on all day just to see and it was actually fine as long as I didn’t use it all the time or I wasn’t constantly searching for signal.

How’re the Evo 4G owners liking Deck’s ICS ROM? For Pre-Alpha it’s pretty damn stable, I’ve been using it daily for the past four days or so and I’m pretty impressed, can’t wait for CM9

hey guys i just bought my cousin a kindle fire for xmas.

apparently it has android store, so i was wondering what the killer apps were so i can direct her to them to make her android/tablet experience all nice and good.

im an iphone owner myself so im personally wondering if there is anything like “appadvice” or “apps gone free” for android.
in case youre on android and dont know what those are, they’re basically 2 legendary tier apps, first one being a full feature app review/video daily app review vids/app stats tracker/everything app store/best app recommends, the second one showing what apps have gone free for the day (so cheapos like me never have to buy anything).

Any really good games? Like bullet hell, Run 'N Gun, Action Platformer (Castlevania, etc) on Android? I have an LG Optimus V and it’s pretty good, have Virgin Mobile, can’t beat $35. Good reception, free net and texting, 300 minutes but I barely use it as a phone.

Reply with quote so I can see it, this thread gets buried quick.

Heh I’m in the same situation. Same phone, want to toss it. Looked that the Stratosphere for a new temp one until May.

I want to get a tablet…Man that Sony S1 is so fucking sexy but seem a bit overpriced…What do you think is worth getting, Sony S1 or Asus Prime?

I’m currently running http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1364075’]ICS 4.0.1 on my HTC EVO 4G. After the initial rooting, I wasn’t all that impressed cause I didn’t notice much difference from Cyanogen (who are planning on doing their own ICS ROM; totally stoked). I was pretty spoiled by Cyanogen. After changing my launcher to GO LAUNCHER Ex and making it my default launcher, it was much more bearable. There was no use for me having the on-screen buttons when the EVO has the 4 physical buttons… Anyway, after doing some minor tweaks (a lot of it was cosmetic), I’m pretty content with it.

Not a huge fan of multiple home screens and widgets, since they’re battery drainers. I just stick to my scrolling dock and go from there. I do like how you can uninstall directly from the apps instead of going into the application to uninstall. Visually, I think it looks lovelier. Being able to change the texting background from black on white to white on black is a god sent. Uh… Having small things like… the CCName to put your name on your phone is cute to mess around with. I do like the text change. Seems much crisper and easier on the eyes.

Using GO LAUNCHER themes are great. If you’ve jailbroken an iPhone or played with one, they had fun home screen tweaks that changed the behavior of your gestural swipes. Instead of the generic left/right swipe, your home screen icons could do things like, spiral in/out, cube inwards/outwards, star motion, etc. To see the same thing on Android was pretty sweet. Maybe this is old news since I just found a better launcher (since Launcher Pro stopped updating/developing)… But I still appreciate the aesthetics of it.

As of right now, the ROM seems quite stable. But, it’s only been a few hours. I can’t really see how I’d have much of a problem with it. It states that the camera isn’t working. Not really seeing too many issues with it. Not having the camera was a big reason I was hesitant putting ICS on, but, whatever. I’ll live. I don’t care about not having the 4G. I hardly ever use it… Even though where my school is, there’s 4G.

:coffee:

Yeah. I’m holding out on phones until my Upgrade in March. I’d like to see what’ll be out then.

I just got the Blackberry Playbook and I’m very impressed by it. Extremely intuitive and easy to use and super fast. Amazing camera too (both of them). And on Feb, they will be releasing an update with many improvements and android apps store.

I think it’s on sale for $199… Better pick one up while it lasts, the deal is too amazing to pass up. Unless you actually like the big bulky 10’ screens, I think a 7 inch screen is perfect for portability and the handling while using it.

Waiting to pull the trigger on the Prime myself, just waiting for the new year. Getting a few hundred during Christmas, should just about cover it. Between the two, I think the Sony tablet is running a proprietary Android build, so you’re at their mercy as far as updates go, unless you mod it. The Prime seems to be running pure Android, and is getting Android 4.0 next month. I’d have the Asian wife go for the prime.

Asian wife already has the Ipad2 but she doesn’t share it with me…I really like the look of the Sony as most Sony’s are always sleek & sexy to me…But Prime seem like the best choice to go for…I guess ill wait a couple more months & then see if the Sony to drops to like $200 i might get that instead…

I think that Playbook will be even lower than $199, it isn’t selling well at all and has other drawbacks compared to an Android tablet.
7" is okay, if you are going to be taking it outside a lot, but for me it is too small. I had a Galaxy Tab which was 7", but gave it to my daughter when I got a Touchpad for $99 at Bestbuy. A much better experience when surfing the web, over the smaller 7" Tab.

I don’t think that Sony is going to drop to $200 anytime soon, it just came out. I bought my dad one for x-mas from B & H photo for $400, and it came with a bunch of accessories for free. Best price I seen on it before that was at Fry’s for $449 and you got a $50 giftcard.

Got my Samsung Galaxy Nexus from Amazon Wireless for $149.00 with a new Verizon contract delivered a few days ago.

Phone is so damn sexy and fast, display is insane. ICS and 4G are very badass…couldn’t be happier.

Voice to search and text is slick as hell too.

How much is the Verizon 4g plan?

I have 2 phones on the plan, the nationwide family talk unlimited text w/twice the data 4GB promo (which is permenant) for $120 I think…

Oh, I’m so jelly. I wanna get the Nexus so bad!

Sent from my HTC EVO 4G now with ICS!

played around with the asus transformer prime and ive come to the conclusion that this is how the matrix/skynet get started… its sooooooooooooooooooooooo good…

That Asus Prime might be my go-to tablet for next year. I think the wife wants to get a Kindle Fire, though. =/

Holy fuck, there are SOOOOO many awesome games for android.

Anyways, I just got a G2x a couple weeks ago… also my first smartphone. I love this phone. I’ve heard about the problems it had though and my phone did freeze a couple times during charging, but I believe I got the issue resolved now. Anyways… I’m on that Spectral Souls crack. BBL!
