The Android thread. Questions, comments, help, etc

so…I got the HP Stream 7 tablet yesterday.

my thoughts.
uh, it was my first windows touchscreen device so I had a hard time getting accustomed to its different navigation.
that’s said. i’ll break it down in a pro vs con way
pro
its definitely a pc in your hand. which, is mind blowing.
its def full windows.
you really get that sense when you switch from win app version to desktop version of viewing and navigating.
con
desktop version is a bit hard to deal with when the screen is just 7 inches. you cant two finger zoom or two finger pull to slide.
pro
I can install anything a pc can, barring the spec requirements of 1 gb of ram or having something outrageous in download size.
con.
because its full windows experience instead of RT certain things you cant seem to do. like set up a gif as the homescreen background. only a wmv file mimicking a gif. these type of differences.
biggest pro
full administrative power.
can do anything you want straight outta the box, including removing all of windows os without worrying about bricking the device.
biggest con.
windows store sucks hard. barren of apps. reminds me of a soviet supermarket.
interestingly,
I cant download anything from windows phone apps store.
tried to buy Mirror’s Edge phone game. wouldn’t let me. windows phone store doesn’t recognize my touchscreen tablet as a compatible device for the game. Even though it is. probably due to the device not running winRT.
meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum,
the windows store I can download pc games but the games don’t have virtual joystick interface installed. and I don’t have a Bluetooth controller. so I can download those games but have no way of playing them.
So the HP Stream 7 is actually…too ahead of its time here. where windows hasn’t caught up to its technology regarding its stores.
I feel like the device is stuck between two conflicting worlds.
and it doesn’t get the benefits of either world.

that said, I was able to install steam onto the tablet but haven’t downloaded vjoy to see if I can have virtual joystick controls to be able to play the few 1gb of ram games in my steam library using the touchscreen itself.

Edit:
so I managed to play Ys from my steam library on the tablet tonight.
I used playtime virtual gamepad emulator to use a touchscreen virtual gamepad. only problem was that I cant play any game fullscreen using the gamepad emulator. The emu doesn’t allow fullscreen yet. but I played it in windowed mode. game ran fine but I have to uninstall steam from the C: path to reinstall it on E: path(sd card).

Snapchat blocking accounts that use 3rd party apps. Bawwww, stay free Android.

the 3D view on this phone is simply amazing.
shame its a Amazon fire.
but watch the vid to see the 3D effects which comes through the video.

Did anyone ever give a crap about the Samsung Edge?

Looks like Samsung is firing off a new Galaxy phone next month.

Now I’m VERY happy I delayed buying a Galaxy S5. Maybe now it’ll be around $200-250 refurbished, which I’m fine with. I’ll compare it to my wants with the new Asus phone, I guess. Since I planned on getting the lowest possible Asus version I don’t think I would’ve gained that much TBH.

this seems like pretty cool tech.

huge ass Samsung multitouch table gives me a hard on.
too bad its so expensive while still being a duel core.

They released some of the differences in Asus’s new phone. the $199 model is smaller, screen only goes up to 720p, has a last-gen Atom proc, and 2 GB of RAM. Still, for $200 it’s pretty solid to me. I might still go with the Galaxy S5 if the 900A or H goes under $250.

Do you guys notice an actual difference in the amount of RAM a phone has?

I’ve used 4 smartphones now, going from 512mb, 2gb, to 3gb of ram. I’m sure the difference is noticeable when running games and stuff, but in terms of navigating the screens, opening stuff like facebook/youtube and pressing the home button to go back to main screen, I do not notice anything significant. Phones still sometimes stalls with all that Android glory.

My phone stalls from time to time but I’m not sure if it’s a RAM issue. I know that when it stalls on my PC it’s a RAM issue so I just link the two.

Looking for good price on a 7 inch galaxy tab 4. Online at various sites I see 159.99 - 169.99, offline at my local Sam’s Club I can get one for 149.99…yet I was told here that 150 is too high. Anybody know where I can get one cheaper?

For whatever reason, Sony’s phones always lag when transitioning screens to me, even their flagships.

I’m happy on a HTC M8 though.

uh, the Sony Xperia Z ultra is amazing.
at first I was impressed by the Samsung Note series implementing Wacom tech to give precise lines with its S-pen stylus…
but this Xperia Z can actually register the lead metal from a pencil’s lead tip to write on the screen. Now that’s freakin amazing.
like mind blowing.
skip to 8:15 minute mark.

edit:
oh yeah, the pebble watch.
big dif between this and android wear watch or apple watch is that because they are using a different type screen the battery life lasts longer.
So you can go a week without recharging as opposed to having to charge every day like all other smartwatches.

Phone is completely full, couldn’t even update apps. :’( I have an OS update for my Note 4 also.

It sounds like the Galaxy S6 won’t even have a microSD card slot. What the fuck is Samsung doing?

I don’t even mind an unremovable battery if it’s high quality, to survive longer than a year or two of charging, nor do I mind a glass back. But they removed MicroSD expandable memory AND these phones are expensive as fuck. I’m glad I went with the S5 but I think it’ll be the last Samsung phone I get.

Trying to put Apple out of business, by copying their crappy desi… Wait.

I’m on a 2 year contract so I’m okay for now, but fuck that. Probably my last contract too, I’d rather just buy the handset even if it’s a bullshit amount on release.

Just got momma an S5.

wow Samsung is really starting to force everyone to keep buying new phones…fuck that. Still happy with my Note 3 and will stay with that for now

Nothing to see here. Note 3 da best

Just like Apple, Samsung will get hated on no matter what they do to their phones.

Samsung sacrificed functionality for premium build quality. Don’t be surprised if their entire premium handset line is all aluminum and Gorilla Glass 4 (no matter how they market it, that shit will still get scratches and eventually crack) while the mid to low handsets line will be the only ones with cheap plastic, removable battery, and expandable microSD slot.

I’ll stick with my Note 3 for now. It’s still working and in great condition. Now about that official Lollipop update…
