Does the Nexus 5 have a removable battery? The lack of an SD card slot is a strike against it for me (The Korean G2 has removable storage and a removable battery, which is the one I’d buy)
I figure I’d just drop my 2 cents about the Nexus 5, since I was waiting for it for so many months.
I’m disappointed. After that interview with an insider claiming the camera and photo quality was going to be a point of emphasis, they go right back to an average 8mp camera for the N5. With the popularity of Instagram and other photo sharing sites, camera quality is one of the biggest selling points for phones these days so it’s sad to see some companies still don’t get it. Google doesn’t seem to know whether they want the Nexus line to ever be a serious contender among top premium phones, or if they just want to put out budget phones with above-average specs. This is probably why Nexus phones still haven’t quite broken through in popularity, despite now being sold by the major carriers. Pure Android and wireless charging are still the biggest draws.
I just switched carriers so I’m looking at which phone I should go after. Having a tablet definitely take away some of the appeal of wanting the newest and best smartphone.
I’ve been using the Nexus 5 for the past few days and I gotta say that the camera is way better than my N4. What makes the camera a little disappointing to me is that taking really good pictures is kind of inconsistent at times. A few of those reviewers asked Google about it and they were told that there will be updates to the stock camera app. I don’t know how updating it will correct this problem but I know the pictures I’ve taken so far are pretty good and especially for the price of this phone (fuck contracts).

Its a crap marketing term to overcomplicate something that didn’t need complications.
And it creates a barrier to those who are not tech savy
the Term megapixle is annoying to both tech and photography enthusiast
I prefer the old PC designations for image size
I rather see a 1900 by 1200 than lets say 2 megalpixle
as 1900 by 1200 I know the dimensions of the image side, height and with.
I just got to play with the N5 here at work. It’s a very nice device and the $350ish price tag is amazing. Camera is really good, its fast and the optical image stabilization and HDR+ feature are cool for sure. Low light photos came out well and motion blur is greatly reduced with the HDR+ feature on. Light years ahead of my Gnex camera of course. Phone is thin, light, kitkat is wicked fast and the display is really clean.
Battery is lasting about 5 hours if you try to kill it. Normal use gets you through the day easily. Battery is probably the one drawback, its just OK. The Note 3, Maxx and G2 own it for free in battery spec.
For 1/2 the price of other comparable devices it is a great deal. I will probably still go with the Note 3 personally but the N5 is pretty sweet.
I will say this about the Note 3 battery, I haven’t been able to kill it. I don’t sit for hours watching movies on it, but an hour+ of Rayman Jungle run, an episode of Mythbusters, 30 minutes of Untitled (Tested’s podcast with Adam Savage), an hour of web browsing and 2 hours of talk time and it’s still got juice after 17 hours.
Still, I’m looking hard at the Nexus 5, just because it’s a Nexus. As much as I love the Note 3, sometimes I miss pure Android.
More importantly in this case, though, the number of megapixels has very little to do with camera quality past a certain point. There are garbage 10+ megapixel cameras and great 5 megapixel cameras.
So I just bought a stylus, the Adonit Jot Pro to be exact. It works fantastic on my android phone… not so much on my windows 8 tablet such that I have to press down a little harder for it to work and it’s not something I want to be doing. Is this a problem with my tablet, or do certain stylus just work better on certain screens?
Nexus cameras historically have average and under photo quality. The stock camera app on pure Android just hasn’t been very good.
Now add that with the fact that the phone doesn’t even keep pace with the 13mp and up trend of current top phones.
It’s one thing to have a poor camera app, but you’ve gotta at least have a better lens. You can’t NOT have at least one of them.
The thing you both failed to realize is that at this point, Nexus fans anticipate not having great photos thanks to lack of software enhancement like Samsung and HTC phones provide. So when a Google guy talks about a new Nexus phone with a great camera, the first thing that comes to mind is megapixels/hardware. NOT having the hardware to make up for the lack of software flaws is a failure… and it shows. Pretty much every N5 review marks the camera quality as one of its weak points.
I recently got a new phone. It’s a Samsung Galaxy Ace II e. I think it’s great so far, and I’m looking forward to making apps/games for it.
My only question at the moment is, is there any music player that I can actually close and not have it run in the background when I don’t want it on anymore? I’ve had the same issue with every player on any phone I’ve owned so far.
Music apps don’t shut down when you close them. They just sit in the background. Currently, I force stop the player, but you really shouldn’t have to do that. When you exit a program on your PC, you expect it to not remain in memory. right?
i don’t have any music player but i have TuneInRadio and it stays on if i exit the app inappropriately like hitting the home button…
try hitting the menu button and hitting exit if its there.
