Hey guys, I hope my fellow demons are well and ready for the update.
Can I please get an opinion on where you rate Akuma in terms of a tier list? I rate him at a solid B, mainly because of his footsies, zoning, anti airs, underrated vortex and escape/switch cancel options.
No problem Iāll give an opinion. I just donāt think that it would be really strong considering my match-up experience is pretty limited against most of the cast. That and tier talk isnāt really my thing.
That said, I donāt mind diving in on the tier list discussion. As a matter of fact, I agree with your placement.
Only thing which stops him from being higher up is his health. I canāt re-call the amount of times that Iāve really been annoyed with the idea of making one mistake and losing over half of my health because of it especially whilst Iām really controlling the match and then one jump in into death kills me.
Donāt worry, dude. Iām inexperienced with this too! Itās a learning experience for us all.
Iām the same as you, I would love to rate him higher, but his low health is too off putting. Plus, Ryu seems a class above him. Although not by much.
So, question. What do you guys do when you throw a fireball and your opponent lands within footsie range but not AA range? I generally throw out a cr.mk xx hado to create pushback, or I may do a surprise dive kick. Wondering if Iām missing anything? Iāve been pairing him with Yoshimitsu and Raven as secondaries, though they need some work.
Also, gonna be throwing up lots of Akuma footage on my YT now that I can play. Iāve been stuck on 298 subs and its driving me nuts, hahah.
Depends on my opponent and character. If heās impatient or has a character with a good jump in, Iāll let them hang themselves and jump. If my opponent wonāt jump a lot or has a floaty character like Xiaoyu (songi ), Iāll be chucking out more fireballs. Also Akumaās fast walkspeed does allow you to walk up srk on jump ins that are a bit outside your range.
Having some issues with the Vega matchup. Hard to zone somewhat, impossible to play footsies with him. I feel like I should be more ārandomā in this match and start jumping at him more.
I donāt bother footsies with him. I zone him with fireballs until I get the knockdown, then I start builing pressure. he has to take risks to get around fireballs. Never end blockstrings with fireballs or sweeps at his cr.mp range he can punish them on block. Donāt jump at him when he has super since it has super quick startup. If the Vega likes pressing cr.lp during your strings, show him pain with a well timed raw launcher.
One thing that got me wondering about the fireball nerf: I remember watching the 2013 matches with PR Rog, and he was able to move almost instantly after a backwards air hado. Is it possible that the nerf doesnāt have as much of an effect if you release the fireball when lower to the ground? Heās already walking before it hits the ground.
Wow, do I hate facing Juri and Cammy. Iām afraid to throw plasma because of Juriās divekick and Cammyās insane reach on her jump. Once they get in I get rushed down. Iām convinced theyāre some of Akumaās more difficult matchups. I thought Chun-Li was bad but she can be zoned well, though she kills Akuma inside. Honestly, Juri, Cammy, Chun-Li, Nina, Kazuya, Dhalsim, and Ogre are the only matchups I feel are truly bad. I feel the rest of the cast is fairly manageable, no?
Juri is -on divekicks so you dont have to always AA them. Just block and punish. Sheās like -4 on divekicks so easy mode punish is srk. Just be careful if she spaces it correctly. Once you shut that down you got it easy. Akuma has better normals and walkspeed for footsies. Juri has crap defense once you knock her down too.
I do find Cammy tough since she has better normals and can punish fireballs and teleports on reaction with meter. Gotta play it safe in that MU. I perfer to get some damage in before she has meter. Walk up AA srk if she tries to jump at the range where if she doesnāt press a button, your srk will whiff. If it trades, you can get a 200-300 combo and make her bleed.

Would appreciate a critique or two of my play. I think its safe to say Iām lamest Akuma playing SFxT (I challenge you to find someone lamer).
Good stuff a few things Iād say to work on are your punishes. Ninaās geysers and skull splinters are all -6 so lp into boost combo or sweep those moves on block. There were also a few times you could have punished harder like that blocked lili stomp or that whiffed srk from ryu.
Another thing is tag your partner in some more. You didnāt use yoshi once in that whole video. Tag him in on some AA srks or punishment combos for more damage and to refill akumaās health.
Iām bad at punishing because I still donāt know whatās punishable and what isnāt. I swear, so many moves that LOOK punishable end up not. But youāre right, I lost tons of damage on some punish opportunities. I got Lars now so Iāll have some better damage extending opportunities. Anyway, overall I think I did a solid job of playing a classic shoto.
Pretty solid akuma and also the lamest one Iāve ever seen.
You canāt combo into misogi from cr.mp or cr.mk unless youāre talking about some new juggle. On the ground you can only combo into it from, cr.hp, cl.hp, and cl.hk i think.
Thanks man, I tried to model my play-style after you. I realized I was relying on the backwards fireball too much, wanted to buff my ground game. The thing is, and correct me if Iām wrong: I donāt know how else to play Akuma in this game. In AE it was obvious with his vortex, here I donāt know? When I do blockstrings I donāt know what else to end with besides hadouken, and he doesnāt have any of the high-low bullshit that the Tekken chars have.
The 2013 update makes it more obvious that Akuma can now be played as more of a mix between zoning and rushdown, as the throw buff and roll nerf will bring back his wake-up divekicks. But I donāt know, sometimes I feel like Iām playing a different game from everyone else. Felt the same way with SF4.
EDIT: If any other Akuma players have an opinionā¦POST IT. Seriously, I need insight.
