Because for all the Lions’ issues, Matthew Stafford has been one of the lone bright spots of that organization and they know damn well if they let him hit the market, they won’t be seeing another decent QB for another decade.
Stafford has improved since he came into the league. He looked really good last year when he wasn’t just feeding Megatron. He’s also clutch which is a good quality to have. He comes big in the 4th.
Matthew Stafford on a team with a legit defense would make a run at a title. He isn’t bad by any means, he just suffers like Brees does in that his team is lacking on one side of the ball.
Most passers hit their prime around the time other positions (except OLine) start to fall off. It’s easy to buy into the idea that Stafford’s best years are to come. Same with other young guys like Winston and Carr.
On that Kershaw and Stafford thing, it’s not only that they played sports at the same school, Stafford was Kershaw’s Catcher and Kershaw was Stafford’s Center. It’s pretty crazy to think that two guys from Dallas that were best friends are now the highest paid athletes in different sports.
That actually makes sense as he didn’t fit the timeline. He would have been due for an expensive extension by the time the Browns see themselves as ready to win. Expensive contracts on players that would run into their mid 30s are definitely not Moneyball.
Lions fan checking in to say the Stafford extension sucks. 1-25 on the road versus teams with a winning record. Granted, we can say historically the saints and colts as dome teams have never done well on the road, but they own Superbowl wins. I told my wife a while ago, I doubt the lions sniff the Superbowl in my lifetime.
Stafford is OK, but he’s no Brees. The lions have had better defenses some years in comparison. I’m not trying to hear it about us being bad historically on defense.
Edit: 5-46 against teams with a winning record. Do you guys honestly think Kraft would be OK making Brady the highest paid player in the NFL with numbers like that in new england without superbowls?
Anyways, we’re all set for SRK fantasy drafts this upcoming week. League 1 drafts Tuesday the 5th, league 2 on Sunday the 3rd.
The Browns have a plan. Stockpile picks, build a defense and a run game and basically hope to stumble into a franchise passer in the meantime. It’s honestly a better strategy than they’ve ever had since rejoining the league.
It makes sense all shitshow aside, Kaep excels in a system built around his playstyle and not every team is willing to change their offense for specifically Kaepernick let alone pay him the money he wants. From what I got from the article, they basically explained why teams aren’t giving a flier to RG3 either since he needs a system built around him too.
Edit: I wish redshirts were a thing in the NFL. Mahomes is going to yank the QB job away from Smith at some point this season, and he’s probably going to get broken in half before he gets really good.
