I ordered a pair of the GameCon 788 yesterday which had a pretty sweet discount, and they meant to be the one of the best for way under a c note your money.
Keeping my eyes open for a new TV and a SSD. TV is getting old and probably close to burnout and I really want a good price for a 1TB SSD.
Going full online this year. I’m so done shopping in brick and mortar stores during the holiday season. I had to go with a family member during a midnight opening last year and it was madness.
I was looking on Amazon, dunno really where else to get them at a decent price. The 240s were $67 with free shipping. The 700xs were over double that. I think the specific model we’re talking about are the ATH-AD700x because that’s the only fully open back model they’re making now.
I like the open design, you get a better soundstage and I prefer to be able to hear things happening around me anyway, just in case there is something that needs my attention. Also with open your ears won’t sweat because the air still circulates, and you get more of a sensation of listening to speakers instead of the sound being pumped into your head. The bleed isn’t an issue for me because I’ll be using them at home in front of my computer, and I don’t play any multiplayer games that would need voice so there is no need for that either.
I was very interested in the 700xs but not sure if I wanted to spend so much more.
My sound card has DTS surround on it (as well as environmental modeling, which I don’t use but if people think that’s something useful I’ll consider using it) so I don’t really need one of those gimmicky surround gaming headsets. Didn’t seem to make any sense at all to get a gaming headset, if I need a mic I can always just buy a stand alone one.
I think what I might end up doing is somewhere down the line grabbing the 700xs then, especially if I see them on some sort of sale. I think they’re both supposed to be really good cans, the 240s should have slightly better bass but outside of the price I’m not sure what their advantage would be. But price is pretty big. I think I’ll see how the 240s are unless you feel really strongly on the 700xs being worth the cost.
I’m still interested in building a PC around a GTX 970 and gonna pick out parts based on whatever sales come up this month. I’ll be here and in the PC thread for some part scouting advice.
I worked at Target on Black Friday once upon a time… Yeah, words don’t even describe what it was like. But Working at Wal Mart was still the worst. Especially since it was a super hood wal mart.
I’m like you, I love soundstage but I’m usually put in a tough spot because I also like good isolation. Those two normally bump heads, but in your case that’s not a problem. If I was in your position I’d probably just spring for the 700x’s because I’d feel a little more comfortable spending more to get something that fits a bit closer to my wants. But that’s just me and I’m not the one spending your money.
If price is an issue, along with timing, then I’d definitely go with the 240’s and look to get the 700x’s down the road. What is the return policy at the place you’re buying the 240’s from? Do they carry the 700x’s? If for whatever reason you’re not satisfied with the 240’s you might be able send them back and spring for the 700x’s. I don’t think that’ll be the case though since the AKG 240’s are usually loved, or at least liked, by those who have a pair. *
Yeah the 700xs are probably better for me. I’m going to try the AKG 240s for awhile since they’re so much cheaper and then grab the 700xs down the line. I’ll look to see what the 700x drops down to. Maybe there will be a Black Friday deal on them. I’ll probably wind up keeping both.
