You mean “retro collecting”. Too many people don’t really play the games they buy.
I think eBay is great. I visit a site similar to nintendoage and everything is pretty fair (better than Amazon or a local game store anyway). But if you’re patient on eBay, you can strike gold. I’ve followed certain games for over a year on eBay and if you can be that patient, you can get some amazing deals that slip through the cracks.
Saturn games were at the SNES prices before those went stupid. But like the SNES titles they keep their value. Panzer Dragoon Saga is a $600 rental if you just want to play it and not keep it, as one example.
I got my FF3 cart for like $30 back in the day. I owned FF2, FF3, A Link to the Past and Super Mario RPG at one point in time. All got stolen from me, and when I look at the prices of those carts now I die a little on the inside. N64 carts are getting a bit pricey too, wish I didn’t sell off my collection years ago. I think my most valuable SNES cart is Super Mario All-Stars.
That Noah’s Ark game is on Steam for like > $5.
Saturn games are expensive because no one bought a Saturn. No one I knew had one back in the day. I remember my brother rented the console from Blockbuster(remember console rentals being a thing?) and playing Nights on it though.
Wii U will probably have the most expensive software over time compared to PS4/Xbone.
I sold off my entire nes/supernes/genesis collection to trade in for a n64 back in the day. I can’t held by cry and wanan punch myself in the face whenever I think about it.
I really wanted a Turbo Duo just to play Rondo of Blood but the retro game market is filled with scam artists.
Here’s real advice if you want to play retro games without spending stupid amounts of money.
Buy a console, then buy a flashcart. Buying games at this point is unjustifiable. I was lucky to get 80% of the Genesis games I wanted when I did, now they are all breaking past 60 bucks each.
When I got a PS2 I left my N64 in my backyard patio.
Personally, to me those were the absolute cream of the crop when I was a kid. Having replayed them recently, I can also say that it’s not just nostalgia but damn those games are fucking timeless.
And bonus, this game wasn’t as well known but imo it’s one of the funnest and most original racers i’ve played to date:
also must just mention about mystical ninja; what game can you say you sometimes played just to get to the fun fair and gamble on horse racing, a quiz show, fancy dress, classic arcade games on a Titan sized monitor. what game can you say you saved up money to do martial arts training so you can earn super powers. what game can you say you spent hours gambling in? what game can you say was almost like a coop shenmue? The Legend of the Mystical Ninja was super god tier
Oh there’s many many more that I’d slap in there, just didn’t want to plaster jpegs all over the thread. Those are just the 6 games, sans megaman X which I poster earler, that always come to mind first.
I feel like I missed out on this mystical ninja dealie, I might just have to download that rom
And contra 3 is just fucking incredible. Stage 3 of that game will forever be one of my favorite stages in platforming videogames ever, period. The only bad thing about that game is that it’s 6 stages long…or short.
If you haven’t already played it, try contra 4 for the DS. I think it rivals or maybe even surpasses contra 3.
Who among you were that asshole kid who had an SNES AND a Genesis? Because I hated you.
Back in 7th grade some kid was talking about trading his SNES for a pager. Even as a SEGA fanboy, I was borderline-offended.
As for RPGs, LandStalker is a Zelda-esque action/puzzle RPG and is really good. Shining Force series is good, not sure if you’ve played either of those. Never got around to playing the Sega CD or Game Gear versions, but now that I mention it I should look into them.
Speaking of which the Lunar games were pretty big shit on the Sega CD once upon a time, and to a lesser degree Popful Mail and Snatcher. Can’t vouch for any Sega CD games though, since I never got around to playing them, even with emulation. Speaking of which, all of these games are more expensive than a human child, so I wouldn’t suggest looking for legit copies for all of them.
edit: can definitely recommend Dark Savior and Shining Force 3 for the Saturn, but that’s a different thread.
Shining Force is a strategy RPG where you move your characters around the battlefield more like a board game. Instead of being limited of 4 characters to a party like in standard turn-based RPGs, you can have up to 12. The strategy element involves knowing what characters to move where, trying to surround enemies, making sure your lower-level characters get experience, etc.
