Texas Showdown 5 Donations

Texas Showdown 5 Donations/Events

Hi as all of you know Bas and Otaku, Kindevu and RF will be Showdown this year. For many of you who barely/never travel out of state for tournaments this is a dream come true. Many top players (American) who usually don’t attend Texas Showdown will be coming down to Houston solely based on the fact that japanese players are attending (with the exception of marvel players).

Quick profile on Otaku - Known mainly for his top CVS2 skills and signature team of K - rock/kyo/hibiki. Also plays #r well in japan (which is equivalent to top player status here in america). Top player in CFJ and a wide variety of other games (some weird games Buk mentioned to me) also. This will be his first tournament in the states.

The reason why Japanese are attending our annual superbowl this year is because I/we (depending how you look at this) promised to pay for their tickets in full or up to 700$/a person. Do the math and this adds up to 1400$. I hope everyone who is planning on attending this tournament contribute in anyway they can. And of course for your donation I will give you a big thank you present depending on the amount you donate listed below:

50$ or more = A complete set of Texas Showdown 5 dvds (around 8 discs)
25$ or more = A complete set of casual play dvds which I plan to film when the japanese arrive, will be in the range of 4-6 dvds roughly
10$ or more = A Texas Showdown 5 DVD of your choice from all the games during the tourney.
10$ < Cards and other goodies from the tournament

I’m sure that with the help of everyone it wouldn’t be too hard to reach the 1400$ goal. If this year turns out to be successful I believe it will set off a precedent for a major fighting tournament to welcome foreign players other then evo (yes evo sponsors the japanese too).

I’m sorry, but once again I have to speak up when I see this crap:

This is outright pathetic. If the Japanese cannot come with their own money, then they shouldn’t come at all. This is blatant ballsucking and it has to stop. If you are seriously nerdy enough to want to pay for these kids to come over and kick your ass in video games, you are a sad excuse for a SF player.

When Team USA went over to Japan years ago, I didn’t see the Japanese giving money for the Americans’ trip. But it’s funny that for EVO2k2, and now for Texas Showdown, people are willing to kiss Japanese ass and pay for their trip. Get a life. If you want to see the Japanese play so badly, download some videos, or go to EVO. There’s absolutely no reason for these guys to get a “free ride” because a bunch of fucking fanboys want to stroke their cocks all day. The Japanese are not Gods of Street Fighter, they are kids who have the ability to play 10x more than we do, due to constant tournaments and massive competition. And your paying for them to come to the US and whup on us some more, just gives them and even greater advantage. I’m sure if somebody paid for me to go to international tournaments, I’d be pretty damn good too!

We need to stop the Japanese ball sucking right here. If they want to come, let them pay for themselves. I’m tired of seeing the US give the Japanese massive hospitality, but then when the Japanese hold tournaments like SBO, they don’t even hold games that US players play. Isn’t it funny that they’ve never had a major MvC2 tournament in Japan? Yet we’ve had 3s and CvS2 and A3 even when the headcounts weren’t that high. Why? Because at the time we realized the Japanese were beastly at those games and we wanted to see them shine and impress us. Funny that the US has never gotten the chance to impress the Japanese in the true spirit of competition…

SBO is more of a pay-per-view style event rather than a major tournament like Evo. That’s why they dropped CvS2 in favor of CFJ this year, even though CFJ is an inferior game. It’s an event, get a buncha random Japanese people to come and see something, make lots of money selling tickets, who cares what the players want to play?
Long story short, nobody plays MvC2 in Japan, why would they have a MAJOR for it when there’s maybe 20 people in all of Japan who’d actually play? Pre-Evo2k2 majors had 3S even before inviting the Japanese, 'cuz it was a new game. After the Evo2k2 US vs Japan 3S EXHIBITION (not tournament), people gave 3S a chance, and the scene grew to the point where it made sense to include 3S in the Evo lineup. A3 hasn’t been in a US major in years… it had a large following when there were majors for it, and now it doesn’t.
If this whole deal was about sucking up to the Japanese, then why did the Japanese have to play through qualifying rounds/pools at Evo, while the US teams get free passes to the main event for SBO? IIRC, Kuni just showed up on the forums one day and was like “what games do you guys want slots in?” Meanwhile we have the Japanese eliminating each other year after year at Evo.

It’s not about sucking up to the Japanese, it’s about having a chance to play some of the best at whatever games you play, and meet a lot of new people. It just so happens that many of the best happen to be Japanese.
The fact that Daigo, d44-BAS, and Otaku are all but confirmed seems to have perked the interest of people who might not have bothered otherwise.

You think it’s dumb, don’t donate, simple as that. People who think it’s worth it, go ahead and donate if you want.

Either way, come to TS5, play some games, hang out. Meet those random people you see on SRK and vids. It might be fun.

Wow, so Team USA gets to go to SBO and gets FREE SPOTS INTO THE TOURNAMENTS but we still have to pay thousands of dollars for the trip!!! YAY!!!

If I was getting paid to come to the US to play in a tournament, I wouldn’t mind having to go through the qualifying pools either. But if I have to pay thousands of dollars for the trip, I’d best get my ass into some kind of finals of high profile match!

The issue here, you see, is money. Nobody is debating that the Japanese are/aren’t good. What I’m saying here is that they have done nothing to deserve our repeated donations to get them to this country for free. Give me a break. Does Justin get invitations for free trips to Europe for MvC2? Do our top players in ANYTHING get offered free trips to Japan? NO.

The undisputable fact is that the only reason these Japanese players are getting free rides in and out of the USA, basically paid vacations where they get to beat up on US players and have a ball, is because losers are willing to donate their hard-earned money to get their own asses handed to them in a paper bag. IF PEOPLE PAID FOR ME TO FLY TO TOURNAMENTS, I WOULD BE A BETTER PLAYER TOO! What amazing feats, what selfish acts, what humanitarian actions of kindness have these Japanese players committed, in order to deserve repeated vacations to the United States? I’m waiting for a legitimate answer.

Use your heads, fools. Why don’t we put some of our money together to make tournaments like Texas Showdown, ECC, and EVO better than they already are. Let’s get national exposure and better media coverage than that joke of a “Game Show Network” piece of trash that covered Evo 2k4. Let’s put our heads and money together and bring competitive fighting games to the mainstream in the United States. Let’s take our heads OUT of our asses and stop giving Japanese kids free vacations because we’re such fucking losers, and instead do something to make our own scene even better. Bringing the Japanese here for free again and again does nothing for the long-term benefit of the US Street Fighter scene. All it does it makes nerds gizz in their pants some more. Let’s stop the insanity.

P.S., if people are flying to Texas Showdown for the sole reason of seeing the Japanese in person, you either 1. don’t know how to download a video off the internet, or 2. are a complete fucking loser. Get a life and go to Texas Showdown for the competition and the atmosphere of it all, NOT because some “celeb-player” is going to be there. If you think the Japanese players are celebrities, you probably still listen to Britney Spears, think Ashlee Simpson is good looking, and splooge all over your Pikachu pillow every night.

Dude you need to SHUT THE FUCK UP. Your opinion is ridiculous. Maybe you’re just cheap, so what if some of us would -donate- thats cause we’re nice DUMBASS. You forget, cheapskate, that the economy in Japan is totally different then that of the US. So why don’t you just shut up and not post in here again. At least the people that donate have money to spare loser, or its you that doesn’t have a job. Get a life buddy. And thanks to this fool I’ll gladly donate some money as well just to rub it in your face!

<DSP-> did you read what this guy replied to my comments in the “donate to bring japan to texas” thread
<DSP-> so basically the economy in japan is different than in the US! so we should donate our money to fly the japanese to texas because their economy sucks!
<Chocobo-> haha the economy
<Chocobo-> feed the poor starving Japanese children
<DSP-> this is hilarious man
<DSP-> yeah
<DSP-> did’nt you know that Daigo is a poor starving child
<DSP-> and he needs to come to the US to eat our food
<DSP-> and then the guy says im a cheapskate who doesn’t have a job
<DSP-> yes, he hit it right on the noggin
<Chocobo-> the country that’s sending 500 million to tsunami survivors
<Chocobo-> obviously plane tickets are far too expensive for anyone to buy there
<Chocobo-> especially the poor little SF players who live in a city where a McDonalds burger costs 5 bucks
<DSP-> yes, i feel so bad for them
<Chocobo-> they practice SF on their $1 machines
<DSP-> i mean, taking them out of their native country and into the US for free must be like taking them out of the squalor and filth and into luxury!
<DSP-> give me a fucking break

Oh, and trust me, I make more right now than you do, I work harder than you do, and I’ve SPENT more travelling, promoting, and overall doing good for the SF community than you ever have and ever will. Cheapskate? You obviously don’t know me son.

Again, if you wanna donate money, do so. If you don’t, don’t. Simple as that. No need to get all hostile to anybody who disagrees.

People coming to TS5 should come because they want to meet new people and get some good comp in. I agree that the scene needs some revival, but let’s face it, arcades and fighting games aren’t gonna go mainstream with the current state of things. People would rather stick to the FPS/RTS circuit. Easier to get into, the monetary investment seems smaller in the short term, don’t need to travel to play good comp.

Fighters could get popular again if online play was better, and if the companies were as active in promoting the scene. If Capcom was sponsoring tournaments all over the place and if the reward for winning a tournament made people feel like it was worth the effort to close the gap between new players/random scrubs and the top, the scene would have a chance.

As it is, exposure is good and all, but the initial draw of fighters to the general public is the idea that either a) they can get lucky and random their way to winning, or b) they played SF2 at 7-11 back in the day and still know how to throw a fireball. When they get raped by anybody who has a clue how to play, what’s gonna keep them coming? They have to overcome a HUGE gap to catch up… there’s no equivalent to learning a better build order or something in fighters, if you get what I’m saying.
For Starcraft or CS or Halo2 or whatever, you can learn some easily repeatable stuff and get far… and the rewards tend to be fairly substantial.
Whereas the effort it takes for a new player to catch up with the top in a fighter is substantially greater, for a much smaller reward. Not enough tournaments and not enough money to be made. Not enough draw to make it mainstream now that there are other, more accessible forms of entertainment. If companies would step in and throw money at the scene then maybe we’d see the arcade/fighter scene swell again.
As individuals, even as a “scene,” we can’t get enough money to do much for the long-term benefit for said “scene.” That’s just the sad truth of it.

…and this is totally off topic so whatever. The scene needs more than visibility is all I’m saying. The easiest way to get the scene going again is cold, hard cash in large enough quantities to attract new players who KNOW they have no shot right now and keep them trying.

And yeah. Donate or don’t donate, no need to make a fuss for either side. SF is just a game, people. No need to get all heated about whether or not we should pay for a few people to come to a tournament. You can debate it and stuff, but keep it civil…

Japanese don’t get to keep their winnings once they win. Either that or they only get a one way ticket. That’s the only way I’m ever paying for somebody elses trip. What kind of non-fanboy person is willing to pay for full airfare, only to have the guy take more of you money once he beats you? Plus you guys all know how smug and stuck up some of those Japanese are too.

Give Daigo the one way ticket. That way he can lose to Canadians again, but only he has no way to get home this time.

We are a fans of something, in this case, arcade games. I’m sure you’ve been to a concert or major league athletic event. Do those people need more money from ticket sales and endorsement deals? No, but we support what they do and are willing to spend money towards them. And if you have a problem with this like CrimsonDisaster said, don’t donate.

The fact is getting exposure on that kind of scale isn’t going to happen with the kind of money we are talking. If you have any bright ideas on what we should spend it on that will help our community, then do so, I’m sure we’d like to hear.

LOL damn what confidence u have in us american players. Well i for one believe it will be a good match in everygame but we might claim top 3 spots in most games. JustinW, John Choi (if he makes it this year) ricky ortiz, eddie lee, flash metroid, nibor i mean the list goes on with top U.S. players and i didn’t even name the top texas players like kensou, fubarduck, david hem, hsien, and crow just to name a few that can compete with the japanese.

Wow so much discussion going on! Keep the spirit up guys.

DSP, you hate all the time so I’m not surprised by your comments. You choose to blow your cash on money matches at ECC I choose to waste it on the japanese, although I don’t think bringing in 100 extra people to your tournament is considered a waste.

Wow… this is a sad thread. Sure, maybe some people want to meet new people, but pay for them to come? That’s just stupid… why meet a person, if they aren’t even making the effort to meet you, let alone remember you on the way back. That’s just classic.

Sugar Land, it’s one thing to shamelessly promote yourself or your own tournament, and it’s another to use some kind of cheap gimmick to get people to come to your tournament. Having fanboys come to Texas Showdown because three Japanese kids are getting a free trip there doesn’t add any quality to the tournament. On the other hand, I’m sure if you got $2100 in donations to help run the tournament, things would go a lot more smoothly. Maybe you could get more special deals at food places and hotels in the area; maybe you could have lots of back-up replacement buttons and joysticks; maybe you could rent out a few more cabinets, or purchase extra time for the event, or anything. I can think of 45 things off the top of my head you could do better with $2100 in donations than fly the Japanese in for free.

And on top of all this, the funniest shit is that I have personally never, EVER heard the Japanese ASK for a free trip to the US. It’s us who go out to them and massage their balls on a yearly basis. Daigo may be cocky and really good at SF, but he knows his limits and he’s not strutting around Japan or the US like the King of the World. He’s good at a fighting game and that’s it, and he knows this, and knows it’s not big deal. And I respect him for that. We see him pull off amazing matches like Daigo v. JWong at Evo 2k4 and we all shit our pants…but he doesn’t flaunt it or talk shit afterwards, he just shrugs it off and enjoys his victory in his own way. These Japanese players are not actively seeking our attention or our money.

So why are we so desperate to give it to them instead of to proper places? Why are we so defeatist in philosophy that we believe that there is nothing better for fighting games? If FPS and RTS and shitloads of other videogames can have huge tournaments and world championships, why can’t Street Fighter or Tekken? And the answer is, unlike those other games, nobody takes us seriously. Because instead of organizing ourselves together and being motivated and driven to get that national attention, instead we sit on our hands, say “we can’t do it, boo hoo!” and then throw our money away flying in Japanese players to kick our asses.

Put your heads in the right place for once.
