The reason why nobody takes us serious is because we’re simply not good enough. Instead of whining that the Japanese beat us in every game, maybe we can play them and learn something from them. And the absurd, insane idea behind it is that maybe we’ll even improve. If we don’t give the Japs any incentive or reason to even associate with us, let alone come to the US to compete in our tourneys, we’ll never be able to measure ourselves with them. By feeling cocky, thinking we’re just as good as them so they should come on their own isn’t going to cut it. Reality check: it’s just not going to happen. Go around it all you want, our fighting game community is just crap compared to theirs and it’s not getting any better. And with no light at the end of the tunnel, I fail to see why donating to improve and expand the fighting community is a bad thing. Not everybody is satisfied to play their friends all the time. Putting money in sticks and buttons and giving away hotel deals isn’t going to draw out more people and thats a simple fact. It’s been tried before and discarded. There are only 4 major national tourneys each year, so why not make them the biggest as we possibly can? It beats scratching our asses and whining why our fighting game community is dying. You call donating money to get Japs a cheap gimmick, I call it an investment.
If you don’t want to donate, that’s fine. Nobody’s going to hold that against you. But until I see you hold a quality tournament which draws out more people and gains more exposure without any “gimmick”, I’d say you have no reason to bitch whatsoever. Bringing the Japs over isn’t going to cost you any money, unless you really think they’re stealing that no.1 spot away from you.
Anyway, lets stop this nonsense and let the thread serve it’s purpose. If you don’t want to donate, you don’t have to and you don’t have to post about it. Go to the Red Cross and bitch why people are donating to the tsunami relief fund.
Just wanted to give lots of props to Lay (Sugar Land) for getting everything together. He is going to put a lot of time into making this year’s Texas Showdown DVD set and is willing to lose lots of profit in order for the event to be larger.
Off topic and as unrelated as always. Scrubs never change.
Anyway, my entire point in this thread has been that inviting the Japanese for the sake of maybe improving the headcount by a few dozen people, does NOT improve the quality of the tournament overall. Instead of worrying about the Japanese, why not look into media coverage? Or better preparations for the players? More money to ship in cabs, etc? Instead we immediately jumped to “$2100 for the Japanese to come for free.” Give me a break.
And you’re absolutely WRONG when you say the reason nobody cares about fighting games in the US is because we’re not good enough. Games like Tekken, Marvel vs Capcom 2, these tournaments have had huge headcounts, and we are good in them. We ARE the undisputed world champions of MvC2, and let’s face it, that game is flashy and fun to watch. There’s no reason besides the fact that people like YOU say that “we suck and can’t hit the mainstream” and totally defeat the work of others with your attitude. And saying that playing the Japanese a few games during Texas Showdown is going to “make us better and then we can go mainstream!” is just assinine. Last time I checked, playing a few games vs good comp didn’t make me jump 20 levels better in anything, and didn’t get me any more noticed. We don’t need more experience, we need more motivated people who are willing to work hard to get the fighting game community noticed.
INVITING the Japanese to promote international competition is a great idea. But outright paying for their trip instead of spending that money on improving the tournaments in concrete ways for the players who were going to attend…whether or NOT the Japanese were coming…is just WRONG. Instead, let’s use that money to improve the tournament itself in concrete ways, and then look towards coverage on something like G4 TV. Maybe if we get in their faces and let them know that we’re here, there’s lots of us, and we’re willing to make some noise in order to get noticed, they’ll listen. But hunching over and giving up, and wasting our money to pay for the “celeb players” to come and whup us up for the sake of getting better for the 2 games you might play against them??? What good does that do besides artificially inflate headcount by a few dozen?
Think about what’s better for the tournament and the SF community at large in the long-term. Thinking short-term is why we’ve had tournaments like ECC, MWC, Texas Showdown and EVO for over ten years and still have no kind of exposure whatsoever.
They dont have marvel majors because that game blows ass but americans are rediculous in there choices of what is trash and what isnt, thats why we suck at the other games, too busy playing a game a 4 yr old might find amusing
Damn ppl why not just pay 50 bux i mean it’s not really donating cuz you get dvd’s so ur pretty much just buying dvd’s and get the chance to see japanese game play for free.
If I do make TS5 which I’m not sure of yet…but I will do my best to make and donate as well for $50. Wanted to give thanks to everyone involved in getting TS5 together. Thanks.
Damn… I never thought I’d see a thread regarding DONATIONS of all things to turn into something so negative.
DSP: If people wanna donate, then people wanna donate. Let people use their money however they want.
Why’re you tripping over something that has like nothing to do with you whatsoever? If you hate fanboys so much, go make a thread called “I HATE FANBOYS WHO DONATE” in general discussion and vent yer anger out in there.
You made your point clear in the first post, it wasn’t really necessary to keep the shit going.
i agree with this statement, and what id like to add is what i think this says, and basically the scene is dieing because of greed id say, ive traveld to acouple of tournaments and i havent won any majors so basically i came back with nothing, but what i went for wasnt the money it was the comp and the exposer, and meeting new people, the problem today is there isnt enough gamers who either care enough about that stuff or just simply cant afford it, the only reason i cant make every major i want is because i cant get that much time off and im sure there are thousands like me who after awhile fell out of the circut, really our country is too big if you ask me, im going to donate when i can becuase i was asked to by a friend, but i kinda of understand what darksidephil is saying, but at the same time meeting people from another culture is pretty awesome to, although i wish atleast they were more eager to come here and maybe meet us half way ont he plane tickets, now i dont know how much they cost maybe 1400 is halfway for them, im cool with donating though, i cant imagine one of them reads english well and was browsing shoryuken got his buddies together adn said hey lets try and go to this tourny, “we should ask the americans for help” but i dont know how it went but i guess someone contacted the japanese players asked them if they wanted to go and since it wasnt a part of the normal plans they were asking there plane tickets be paid, in any case i will still donate cause even though it might not affect the sence much now i belive the amount of attention TS5 is going to get this time around that maybe it will grow closer to evo size and importance, ask anyone whos been we run pretty organized and sick tournys here
as far as reviving the apprent scene that used to exsist a few years ago i dont know whats going to happen, also i wasnt even apart of it i came around when reload came out and i thought the scene was awesome then, but apprently it was even better than that at some time, wish i could of been there i should of kept playing SF at the stop n go around the corrner when i was 10
anyway just my thoughts on that
right your sol greater than mine i think the last time we played was like 5 months ago, anyway doesnt matter think what you want, one more thing GGXX is like number 2 or somehting in japan, its only dead here cause the secene is dieing and the old schoolers didnt give it a chance
Yo Lay what up? I’m gonna donate money when I get to Houston, not sure how much yet, but I definitely wanna get the DVD’s so I’ll talk to you on Friday, I should be at the hotel around 2. Laterz.
HAHA DSP you should stop wasting your money matches. I don’t even wanna know how much you’ve lost just to Gainesville alone.
