Tell me why I should read Y: The Last Man

Looking for a new series to collect in trades.

Why should I choose this one?, or if not this one, suggest something to start reading.

Because it’s awesome. I’d tell you more but it would spoil the experience and joy in reading it.

“it’s awesome” doesn’t tell me why I should read it.

what is it about, what will I like about it?

why this, and not, say, “American Virgin”, or something else?

I enjoy Y: The Last Man. Maybe not as much as a lot of people, and I do think its hype is a little overcooked, but it’s a good series. Brian K. Vaughn at his best.

Hell, the main character is an escape artist. That’s cool-ass shit.

Check out WE3. Cool sci-fi action.
Animals outfitted with tech stuff by the gov to be the “perfect assasins” escape from their facility.

Violence ensues.

Only 3 issues, so it’s a quick read.

Art by Frank Quietly (sp) and story by… I think… Mark Millar?

I heard that facet of his personality is based on Jim Steranko, actually.

Still, this doesn’t give me reasons I should read it.

Y: The Last MAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!1 is awesome.

It has everything an AWESOME story needs.

First, it has a great high concept - it’s about the last man on Earth, for crying out loud. And yet, BKV does not take the easy route. We could’ve had 5 years’ worth of gangbang stories and just cheap sex jokes, but BKV and Pia Guerra take the high road and explore the nature of what the world would really be like if all the men died. How would the governments recover? How would the women continue on with their lives? It’s just logical and convincing how he presents his vision of the world.

Second, the character development and interactions just grip you. After you read a bit, you just want to continue reading because you just start caring about these chicks and Yorick (the last man).

Third, the plotting is expertly paced. Throughout the series, there’s the protagonists’ primary goal of trying to figure out why all the men died, and why only Yorick is alive. It’s a complete mystery, but little clues get strewn about. It’s always enough to leave you wanting to know what happens next, but it’s not like Lost or X-Files bullshit where they just try to string you along for the hell of stringing you along. You do get satisfaction and payoff. And it’s not like the mystery is the only thing going on. They go on plenty of sidequests to keep things interesting. For example, Yorick tries to find his mom, his sister, and his girlfriend.

Fourth, the art’s all around good stuff. Pia Guerra can draw. All the people look good, the settings look good, the storytelling is clear, and she can do humor and somber. Even when they get guest artists, it’s still good stuff. Paul “Concrete” Chadwick even did a couple of issues in the early days.

Fifth, there are monkeys in this comic.

Sixth, there’s plenty of subtext to satisfy any English lit major asshole. Most Vertigo books are deeper reads than most other Marvel/DC comics, but a lot of them can get fairly pretentious and a little too obscure for general audiences. Not dissing on The Filth, because that’s one of my favorite comics, but I am pretty sure The Filth would break the mind of any person who tried to read it. Y isn’t pretentious in an annoying way at all. It’s just intelligent without being forceful in that regard. A lot of subtext on feminism is in there if you want to read into it, but if you just want to enjoy a rip-roarin’ post-apocalyptic epic, you won’t get hit over the head with the Pitchfork Book. (You know what I’m talking about? That one dude who writes for Pitchforkmedia just wrote a book called How To Read Comics or some such shit.)

Seventh, I just wrote this decent-sized post extolling the virtues of one of my favorite comics ever. If it turns out this doesn’t inspire you to at least TRY the first volume, I will feel like I have failed you as a fellow SRKer. I may then be forced to track you down and shove my personal ASS BAR down your throat until you choke. I don’t think I’d want to get your phlegm on my ASS BAR so you had best know the score.

Story by Grant Morrison on Elmer’s Glue.

We’ve been pimping Y THE LAST MAAAAAAAN!!!111 for forever - if Taichi doesn’t trust the SRK Comic Book Forum Illuminati at this point, then there’s no saving him.

I’m still amazed there’s people that don’t read FAAAABLES!!111 here. That’s my failure as a human being.

Welp, can’t top Zephy, not gonna try. Imma just back him up saying that you need to read it.

Y the last man is a great read. Zephyranthes pretty much covered why you should read it (I think he forgot to mention there’s sexy pirates though), so if that didn’t sell you, consider checking out:

DMZ- Great art, and what could end up being a great story. Imagine if Manhattan was a war zone, and there was only one reporter willing to go in and report what is actually going on. Thats pretty much the gist of it. DMZ has some very creative ideas in it (the last issue was about a graffiti artist who paints an entire subway line) and I can really only see this comic getting better as it continues.

Fables- This series is great. I haven’t been this into a comic since Sandman, which is saying a lot. The writing is good, and the whole concept of having story book characters living in New York is very well done. The story starts off a little slow, but the characters will really draw you into the story. By the time shit starts popping off (by the third or fourth arc i think) you will love this comic.

Black Hole- It’s only 12 issues long, and the whole story is collected in one Hardcover, so I’m not sure if this one fits your criteria, but what ever. Black hole is about a STD that only effects teenagers, and effectively mutilates their bodies in different ways (tails, facial growths ect ect). The story focuses on a few people with the disease, and the ups and downs they experience because of their condition. You will almost guaranteed read this whole comic in one sitting, it’s that good.

You should read it because they will make a movie out of it someday and all of your friends at work will ask you how it was different from the comic, hey you get to be cool for fifteen minutes. Then the rest of the year they will poke fun of your fandom and tell you Spider-Man is gay and send you that e-mail floating around where he is dancing in a very unmanly way because “It’s Friday!!!” to piss you off. Oh well there’s always another comic book movie around the corner. Welcome to my life.

Basically think of all the things that suck about the comics you currently read. Then take them out. Then you have Y the Last Man. That’s reason enough. :wgrin:

The question isn’t why should you read it… the question is WHY AREN’T YOU READING IT?

lol.

okay, let’s put it this way.

I had it in my hand last week, but I didn’t have the money for it.

I’m going back tomorrow, and I’m gonna give the first issue a go.

the REASON for this is, I WAS collecting “Preacher”, up until the third volume…When a friend told me he had 'em all and didn’t plan to read 'em ever again, so he’d let me have 'em for the cost of shipping.

they SHOULD arrive tomorrow, so I’m looking for something to enjoy when that ride is over.

:confused::confused::confused:
sano’s got issues. And not the kind you store in longboxes, either.

Welcome to five years ago.

Sano is like the rogue maverick of the comic book forums. Defying the Illuminati and causing disaster where he may roam. It’s epic in a nerdy, online forum kinda way.

Someone should be his sidekick to put in obvious peral and rescue when plot devices are running thin. I choose you Zephy. Now in order to be said sidekick you must be an alien or earthling minority, and possess no physical strength or powers whatsoever. Also you have to crack lame jokes at inappropriate times.

There’s an illuminati?

you’d think, considering (and I’m abandoning all pretension here) the fact that I’m one of the most knowledgable comic guys here (at least knowledgable about the camps I support) I’d at least know about this, and at most…run the damn thing.

of course, I ain’t complaining (dissent will only make them stronger), I just find it odd that if there IS an illuminati, that I’m not a member.

or maybe I AM a member, and it’s SO secret that I just don’t know.

P.S. Before anybody jumps on my ass about my lack of knowledge about this title, considering the fact that it’s a DC book, I’m just now starting to take an interest in Vertigo.

for the longest time my comic reading has been restricted to the capes and tights crowd, but now I’m branching out into my other interests (I think that’s why I love Preacher so much).

I really haven’t read much Vertigo, as a result, I’m looking for good Vertigo series to get hooked on (Preacher is a natch, and I hear good things about Sandman [despite the fact that I’ve tried to read it in the past, and just couldn’t get into it]. I want stuff that’s intelligent, there’s a lot of good Vertigo series, but there’s a lot of droll crap as well.)

I don’t wanna come right out and say “I want something like Preacher!” because, really, nothing IS like Preacher.

I’m gonna give Transmetropolitan a try when I can get some Trades ordered in, but until then, I wanted something else, because even though I love Garth Ennis, too much of a good thing can be bad, y’know?

Taichi, I know it’s not Vertigo, but have you read H.E.R.O.E.S. ?

and Y the Last Man is awesome, though it somewhat dragged after the “big” reveal the latest issue was certainly a shocker. anyways get the books. And, as mentioned before, DMZ is really good too.

And though its not DC at all, do read Criminal, for the genius that is Brubaker (hopefully Messiah Complex rectifies his previous X-Men run)

you should read Y, but only long after you have read and re-read DMZ, Exterminators, and Sandman Mystery Theatre
