Tell me why I should read Y: The Last Man

Y: The Last MAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!1 is awesome.

It has everything an AWESOME story needs.

First, it has a great high concept - it’s about the last man on Earth, for crying out loud. And yet, BKV does not take the easy route. We could’ve had 5 years’ worth of gangbang stories and just cheap sex jokes, but BKV and Pia Guerra take the high road and explore the nature of what the world would really be like if all the men died. How would the governments recover? How would the women continue on with their lives? It’s just logical and convincing how he presents his vision of the world.

Second, the character development and interactions just grip you. After you read a bit, you just want to continue reading because you just start caring about these chicks and Yorick (the last man).

Third, the plotting is expertly paced. Throughout the series, there’s the protagonists’ primary goal of trying to figure out why all the men died, and why only Yorick is alive. It’s a complete mystery, but little clues get strewn about. It’s always enough to leave you wanting to know what happens next, but it’s not like Lost or X-Files bullshit where they just try to string you along for the hell of stringing you along. You do get satisfaction and payoff. And it’s not like the mystery is the only thing going on. They go on plenty of sidequests to keep things interesting. For example, Yorick tries to find his mom, his sister, and his girlfriend.

Fourth, the art’s all around good stuff. Pia Guerra can draw. All the people look good, the settings look good, the storytelling is clear, and she can do humor and somber. Even when they get guest artists, it’s still good stuff. Paul “Concrete” Chadwick even did a couple of issues in the early days.

Fifth, there are monkeys in this comic.

Sixth, there’s plenty of subtext to satisfy any English lit major asshole. Most Vertigo books are deeper reads than most other Marvel/DC comics, but a lot of them can get fairly pretentious and a little too obscure for general audiences. Not dissing on The Filth, because that’s one of my favorite comics, but I am pretty sure The Filth would break the mind of any person who tried to read it. Y isn’t pretentious in an annoying way at all. It’s just intelligent without being forceful in that regard. A lot of subtext on feminism is in there if you want to read into it, but if you just want to enjoy a rip-roarin’ post-apocalyptic epic, you won’t get hit over the head with the Pitchfork Book. (You know what I’m talking about? That one dude who writes for Pitchforkmedia just wrote a book called How To Read Comics or some such shit.)

Seventh, I just wrote this decent-sized post extolling the virtues of one of my favorite comics ever. If it turns out this doesn’t inspire you to at least TRY the first volume, I will feel like I have failed you as a fellow SRKer. I may then be forced to track you down and shove my personal ASS BAR down your throat until you choke. I don’t think I’d want to get your phlegm on my ASS BAR so you had best know the score.

We’ve been pimping Y THE LAST MAAAAAAAN!!!111 for forever - if Taichi doesn’t trust the SRK Comic Book Forum Illuminati at this point, then there’s no saving him.

I’m still amazed there’s people that don’t read FAAAABLES!!111 here. That’s my failure as a human being.

Sano is like the rogue maverick of the comic book forums. Defying the Illuminati and causing disaster where he may roam. It’s epic in a nerdy, online forum kinda way.

I don’t think sano qualifies as “rogue maverick” in any way, shape, or form. He’s the forum mod. In other words, he is the very epitome of THE MAN. By comparison, all of the rest of us have the potential to be mavericks.

There is no SRK Comic Book Forum Illuminati. Such a thing does not exist, and I’m not just saying that because I’m a member of it. There might possibly be something like the Secret Society of Supervillains, though - a group of freedom fighters which exists to subvert the evil status quo maintained by THE MAN (aka sano), who continually oppresses the unsuspecting masses.

Someone should be his sidekick to put in obvious peral and rescue when plot devices are running thin. I choose you Zephy. Now in order to be said sidekick you must be an alien or earthling minority, and possess no physical strength or powers whatsoever. Also you have to crack lame jokes at inappropriate times.

I don’t think I completely qualify. I mean, I am Asian, so that satisfies the “earthling minority” part, I suppose. But cracking lame jokes at inopportune moments? Not possible. All of my jokes are fucking awesome and delivered with lethal precision and not corny at all.

I nominate P.Gabby instead. He’d be the perfect enforcer.

Not that anyone has done anything wrong, of course. You never know, people have changed my mind about things in the past and have shown me to be wrong at times in PMs. I do try to be fair. I’m doing this all by myself and I’m not beyond people helping me out or telling me I’m wrong when I am, but PMing me is still the best way.
