Considering that the Turtles were a gag to begin with, I can’t give Eastman and Laird too much flak for licensing/selling the property. It’s not like they had integrity in mind when they drew frickin’ turtles with ninja weapons and parlayed them into strips to make fun of other comics that were popular at the time.
Pretty much everything that people cherish about the Turtles is the result of “selling out” to some degree. The movies, the '80s cartoon, the games, the toys, whatever.
That’s the virtue of owning the stuff you created. You (holy shit) have fun and do what you want with your creation. Granted there are better-quality (though not as successful) examples of indie comics out there, but they share the same free spirit exhibited by TMNT in its original form.
